WHY ENROLL IN THE AGRICULTURE CLASSES?

Agriculture is a dynamic, fast growing and changing field. The need for good services is ever changing and increasing.  Our modern changing consumer’s world, with its new instant products and new methods of processing and packaging, has increased the need for trained people. Today the need for agriculturally oriented people is greater than before.  Agriculture is our greatest national asset. It is so successful in providing consumer goods that it is taken for granted. California is the most important agricultural state in the nation.  Students interested in an agriculture career should be encouraged to make the most of their school years and explore agriculture. The training encouragement and assistance providing will help all students meet their educational objectives. The agriculture of tomorrow will have no place for the inefficient or poorly trained person.  As long as people keep eating three times a day, as long as we seat an additional 8,000 people at nations breakfast table every morning, as long as we furnish most of the fiber for clothes, and as long as the population in California alone increases at the rate of 65 people per hour, agriculture will continue to grow. Mechanization and consolidation of farms will continue to decrease yearly, this means that the need for trained, skilled people is the greatest single need for agriculture. It is up you to make plans for your future.    For more information visit the Le Grand FFA Website at www.legrandffa.weebly.com , Le Grand High School FFA Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or National FFA website at www.ffa.org

FFA LEADERSHIP

Upon enrollment in an Agricultural Class each student becomes a member of the

largest youth organization in the United States, FFA. In California there are over

50,000 students involved in the FFA. Students will have opportunity to attend

leadership activities throughout their four years of high school. FFA promotes,

through agriculture, premier leadership, personal growth, and career

success. Students are trained for leadership for tomorrow.

The Le Grand Agriculture Department seeks to help students develop a sense of

confidence and self worth that will lead to fulfilling and productive lives. We

strive to help students, through FFA and Agricultural Classes, to develop life long

skills in Public Speaking, Critical Thinking, Citizenship, and Personal and

Interpersonal Skills to elevate and extend ones standards of excellence.

The FFA is an integral part of the classroom learning environment, and

encourages personal and professional growth along with life long leadership and

networking skills.

The National FFA Organization is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education

 THE COLORS

Perhaps no more appropriate colors for a youth organization could have been selected than National Blue and Corn Gold. Rich and cheerful, these colors should appear in connection with all meetings, and in the equipment and paraphernalia used. The yellow corn color on a background of medium blue has been found to be as ideal color combination.

THE MOTTO

The FFA motto gives members twelve short words to live by as they experience the opportunities in the organization.

THE FFA CREED

I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds - achievements won by the present and past generations of

agriculturists; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former

years.

I believe that to live and work on a good farm, or to be engaged in other agricultural pursuits, is pleasant as well as challenging; for I know the joys and discomforts of agricultural life and hold an inborn fondness for those

associations which, even in hours of discouragement, I cannot deny.

I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in my own ability to work efficiently and think clearly, with such knowledge and skill as I can secure, and in the ability of progressive agriculturists to

serve our own and the public interest in producing and marketing the product of our toil.

I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining; in

the life abundant and enough honest wealth to help make it so--for others as well as myself; in less need for charity and more of it when needed; in being happy myself and playing square with those whose happiness depends upon

me.

I believe that American agriculture can and will hold true to the best traditions of our national life and that I can exert an influence in my home

and community which will stand solid for my part in that inspiring task.

The creed was written by E. M. Tiffany, and adopted at the 3rd National Convention of the FFA. It was revised at the 38th Convention and the 63rd

Convention.

OFFICIAL UNIFORM AND FAIR UNIFORM

The Le Grand Chapter is involved in many events throughout the year. As FFA members, we have the opportunity to impact many people who may or may not be familiar with the FFA organization: Community residents, business people, FFA sponsors, guests, parents, etc. Therefore, first impressions are crucial, and that involves the way we dress. ALL FFA members are required to wear official dress while participating in any official activities  The official dress for male members is to be black slacks, white shirt, with official blue FFA tie, black shoes and black socks and the official jacket zipped to the top.  The official dress uniform for female members is to be a black skirt or black slacks, white blouse with official blue FFA scarf, black shoes with neutral colored nylons and official jacket zipped to the top. Black slacks may be worn for outdoor activities, such as judging, excess traveling, and camping.  The official fair show uniform for FFA members includes; white shirts or blouse, white pants, FFA tie or scarf, and the FFA jacket. Shoes should be appropriate for species being shown.

Le Grand FFA Livestock Application Complete application fully. Incomplete applications will not be considered for the LGHS Livestock Show Team. Below please designate what animal and fair you would like to apply for.  Animal: ________________________ Fair: ________________________ Animal: ________________________ Fair: ________________________ Have you shown an animal with Le Grand FFA before? If so, what animal(s) and what did you learn from the experience? Will you be keeping your animal at the school farm? If not, where will your animal be housed? The Le Grand FFA can provide housing for your market animal at the LGHS school farm facilities. If you wish to be considered for keeping your animal at the school farm please explain what you believe your expectations for responsibility would be while on the farm property? Why do you want to show a market animal this year? What are the expectations of your work and behavior as a student showing a livestock animal with the Le Grand FFA? Have you ever had or been addressed for a behavior issue by Le Grand High School or Le Grand FFA in the past? If so, explain what the situation was.

Le Grand FFA: Do More, Give More, Be More

16

Raising a market animal comes with extra responsibilities that go beyond feeding twice a day. Can you commit to attending showmanship practices, farm clean-up days, wash and shearing/clipping workshops, and weigh days that may occur during the week and on weekends? Is there any other information that you would like to share about why you are qualified or should be afforded the privilege of keeping your animal at the Le Grand FFA school farm facilities? Please explain. I understand that if I am approved to raise an animal with the Le Grand FFA that I am being held to high expectations of hand feeding my animal twice a day, attending all showmanship practices, acting responsibly and exercising good judgment and good decision making during my time spent with my animal or at the involved facilities. If I do not live up to these expectations, a meeting will be called with my guardians and I may not be allowed to show my animal at the Chowchilla/Merced County Fair as per the decision of the advisors and the school administration. I also understand that if my behavior, care for my animal, or attendance to mandatory events (practices, meetings, fair awards, etc.) is poor, then I will not be allowed to show an animal in the future. _____________________________________ ________________ Student Signature Date As a guardian of a student applying to raise a market animal with Le Grand FFA I understand that the expectations for my student are high for responsible behavior in caring for their animal as well as personal behavior and decision-making. I understand that if my student exercises poor judgment/behavior and/or is not in attendance for showmanship practices, not feeding regularly, or not properly caring for their animal that they will be disqualified from the project and not able to show at the Chowchilla/Merced County Fair and that I will have to take personal responsibility for the animal and any costs associated with it. If my student has shown a lack of respect for rules, proper behavior, care for their animal, or authority in the past, I understand that they may not be selected for the privilege of showing an animal with Le Grand FFA this year or in the future. _____________________________________ _________________ Guardian Signature Date
