Vedas are not only the

fountain heads of Indian culturebut also the most ancient andcherished heritage of the world. In them we find a synthesis ofreason and devotion, freedomand responsibility, art and science, nature and culture. The highestaspects of human values areenshrined for the first time in theVedas for one and all. In this waythe Vedic literature is thecherished treasure of everybodytranscending the barriers ofGender, Class, Race andNationality. Therefore, it is theprimary duty and National prideof us to perpetuate this glorioustradition.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, since its inception (1938) hasbeen working in the light of thissublime vision and hence with itshundreds of publications dealingwith the Vedic literature alongwith the manifolded programmesare the standing testimony of itscommitment to the Vedic culture. As a continuation of this legacy,

The Vedas are the ancient

scriptures or revelation (Shruti)of the Hindu teachings. Theymanifest the Divine Word inhuman speech. They reflect intohuman language the language ofthe Gods, the Divine powers thathave created us and which ruleover us. There are four Vedas, each consisting of four parts.

The primary portion is the mantraor hymn section (samhita). To this are appended ritualisticteachings (brahmana) andtheological sections (aranyaka). Finally philosophical sections(upanishads) are included. The hymn sections are the oldest. The others were added at a laterdate and each explains someaspect of the hymns or followsone line of interpreting them. TheVedas were compiled around thetime of Krishna (c. 3500 B.C.),and even at that time were hardlyunderstood. Hence they are veryancient and only in recent timeshas their spiritual import, like thatof the other mystery teachingsof the ancient world, begun to berediscovered or appreciatedeven in India. Like the Egyptianteachings they are veiled, symbolic and subtle and requirea special vision to understand anduse properly.

Rig Veda: The Rig Veda isthe oldest of the Vedas. All theother Vedas are based upon itand consist to a large degree of

RIG, YAJUR,

SAMA , ATHARVAAND

NATYA VEDA

various hymns from it. It consistsof a thousand such hymns ofdifferent seers, each hymnaveraging around ten verses. The Rig Veda is the oldest bookin Sanskrit or any Indo-Europeanlanguage. Its date is debatable. Many great Yogis and scholarswho have understood theastronomical references in thehymns, date the Rig Veda asbefore 4000 B.C., perhaps asearly as 12,000. Modern westernscholars tend to date it around1500 B.C., though recentarcheological finds in India (likeDwaraka) now appear to requirea much earlier date. While theterm Vedic is often given to anylayer of the Vedic teachingsincluding the Bhagavad Gita, technically it applies primarily tothe Rig Veda. The Rig Veda is thebook of Mantra. It contains theoldest form of all the Sanskritmantras. It is built around ascience of sound whichcomprehends the meaning andpower of each letter. Mostaspects of Vedic science like the

practice of yoga, meditation, mantra and Ayurveda can befound in the Rig Veda and still usemany terms that come from it.While originally several differentversions or rescensions of the RigVeda were said to exist, only oneremains. Its form has beenstructured in several differentways to guarantee its authenticityand proper preservation throughtime.

Sama Veda: The SamaVeda is the Yoga of Song. Itconsists of various hymns of theRig Veda put to a different andmore musical chant. Hence thetext of the Sama Veda is areduced version of the Rig Veda. Its secret is in its musicalannotation and rendering. TheSama Veda represents the ecstasyof spiritual knowledge and thepower of devotion. The Rig Vedais the word, the Sama Veda is thesong or the meaning. The RigVeda is the knowledge, the SamaVeda its realization. Hence thetwo always go together likehusband and wife. The Rig Veda

is the wife and the Sama is thehusband.

Yajur Veda: The Yajur Vedaseen by the outer vision is theVeda of ritual. On an inner level,it sets forth a yogic practice forpurifying the mind and awakeningthe inner consciousness. Severalversions of the Yajur Veda exist, which differ in a number ofrespects. It was the main Vedaused by the priests in ancientIndia and has much in commonwith the Egyptian Book of theDead.

Its deities are the same asthe Rig Veda. The purpose ofthe ritual is to put together andrecreate within ourselves theCosmic Man or Indra. The ritualis to recreate the universe withinour own psyche and thereby unitethe individual with the universal. Its series of sacrifices culminate inthe Atmayajna or the self-sacrificewherein the ego is offered up tothe Divine. While the lessersacrifices win the lesser worlds, the Self-sacrifice wins all the

worlds and gains the greatest giftof immortality.

Atharva Veda: The AtharvaVeda is the last of the Vedas. It has not always been acceptedas a Veda, which are oftenspoken of as three. It still containsmany hymns from the Rig Vedabut also has some more popularmagic spells which are outside ofthe strictly ritual-knowledgeorientation of the other Vedas.

Like the Rig Veda it is acollection of hymns but of a morediverse character, some veryexalted like the Rig Veda othersof more common nature. As suchit gives us a better idea of the lifeof common people in Vedic times.

Atharvan is also an importantfigure in the Zoroastrian religion.Atar is the Persian name for fireand the Atharvan is the fire priest. The deities of the Atharva Vedaare also the same as the Rig Vedaalthough Rudra-Shiva assumes amore visible role. The language isa little simpler and less variable inits forms.
