The transforming power of art to change worlds from mundane to specacular is only a tip of its power. What creative processes do for the advancement of human intelligence and its importance for ecomomic globaliza-tion is just beginning to be measured. As we move into the holiday season, I take a mo-ment to be grateful for our children's beauty and their potential to improve this world aesthetically, socially, technologically and scientifically, simply by being creative.

Join us for "Realizing Relief" an exhibition of new KS artwork. Miniature pieces are available for sale and what better gift giving idea than a KS work of art! See Realizing Relief at IFLT gallery in nobrow coffee and tea co., 315 East Broadway (300 South) in Salt Lake City from Dec. 19,'08-Jan. 12,'09

Summer in Kindred Spirits is a time of dance! KS collaborated with Children's Dance Theater to make wind chimes in the KS studio and create dance at Virginia Tanner studios inspired by the movement of the wind and sounds of chimes.

A KisS moment is one of those ahh haaa moments- When somebody has a revelation, realization, epiphany or just a simple awareness that brightens the day. Often KisS moments happen to our KS kids, but they also happen to the many adults who join us in the studio. The following is an excerpt from a letter sent to Kindred Spirits that describes a KisS moment experienced by Mary Burris, M.D, Chief Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow, UofU School of Medi-cine and KS visitor:

"Initially, I had the expectation of seeing a group of children with disabilities work on simple art (i.e: simple finger painting). What I discovered was so much more. First, there were children with disabilities and children without disabilities working side by side...Second, this was not just finger painting. The art was very in depth and taught fairly complex concepts. However, every stage was clearly explained and the children were assisted to their level of ability. Third and most important, all the children were happy and seemed to enjoy the project. It was re-freshing...It really allowed me to see that the quality of life for children with disabilities is much better than the perception given during a short pediatric clinic appointment. Kindred Spirits offers a wonderful opportu-nity for children of all abilities and levels to work together, learn about each other, and enjoy creative expression." If you and/or your child have experienced a KisS moment related to Kindred Spirits please send a description to KindredSpiritsArt.org. Your experience may be included in our newsletter!

Give itUPTwo-Thirds of the Kindred Spirits annual budget comes from in-kind support and non-monetary donations. These gifts play an important role in making Kindred Spirits possible and there are many ways to support the quality work we do! All donations are tax dedictible. Here are just a few supportive suggestions:lSponsor a month of rent for the Kindred Spirits art studio! lServe on committees to help coordinate special events and projects. lGive store gift cards that can be used for art supplies and food for KS events. (Michaels, Office Max, Discount School Supply, CostCo and others.)lSponsor tuition or partial tuition for a child.lPurchase ink for our printer. (hp Color Laser Jet 2840: blk, cyan, mag, yellow)lOrder a roll of laminate for our laminator. (LX1200 Brother, A312.0 roll)lPass-on old, but working shop tools. Also, old long-sleeve work shirts make great smocks.lBusiness owners can help in many ways: advertising, printing, old working equipment, and discontinued papers are just a few possibilities.lEven the smallest donations make a difference: liquid hand soap and cleaning supplies, reams of copy paper, postage stamps...etc. lCurrently KS is wishing for a craft drill for making tiny holes in objects such as sea-shells and an electric kiln compatible with clay and glass.

Have you ever felt like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole? It's not always comfort-able being in our own skin. Who doesn't know this? Kermit T. Frog sang about this in his song about being GREEN. The following poem by our nations first children's poet laureate gives us a funny take on this concept.
