Paying special

attention to the

needs and abili-

ties of Wounded

Warriors

Kansas ESGR has spon-

sored three Job Fairs

in 2009 and 2010 and

will partners with Kan-

sas Works on future

Job Fairs. The Kansas

Department of Labor

and Kansas ESGR have

partnered together and

have implemented a

Transition Assistance

Program to assist re-

turning deployed

Guardsmen and Reserv-

ists in job-search

preparation.

From the ESGR Insider Jan 2011

ESGR is partnering

with other Federal

Agencies to seek op-

portunities that will

enhance employment

options for service

members and their

family members

through the rollout of

the Employment Initia-

tive Program, EIP.

ESGR is already ac-

tively engaged with

several Federal Agen-

cies in this pursuit to

include the Department

of Veterans Affairs,

Department of Labor/

Veterans Employment

and Training Service,

Small Business Admini-

stration Office of Per-

sonnel Management ,

Employer Partnership

of the Armed Forces

and the Yellow Ribbon

Program. In addition,

ESGR is working with

key non-Federal enti-

ties where the rela-

tionship enhances the

mission, goals and ob-

jectives of EIP.

ESGR committees are

to take full advantage

of all programs in part-

nership with public and

private entities, to en-

hance employment op-

portunities for service

members and their

families, especially fo-

cusing on those com-

pleting active duty

tours and our Wounded

Warriors. ESGR will

strive to accomplish

this by:

Communicating

the value to em-

ployers inherent

in hiring current

and former

members of the

Creating per-

From the State Chair During the past several months

correspondence between National

ESGR and the Kansas ESGR as well

as the other states has been very

hectic as well as overwhelming.

ESGR has taken on a new initiative

to assist Guard and Reserve Mem-

bers and their spouses that are

unemployed to attain creditable

employment.

What does that mean for Kansas

ESGR? To say the least we are

ahead of the power curve. If you

will remember two years ago we

conducted our first job fair and

have conducted two more this past

year. Kansas ESGR has partnered

with other agencies with the same

missions to conduct seven job

fairs this fiscal year. That sounds

like an unattainable goal since the

fiscal year is about half over.

Because of the dedication of our

full-time staff, as well as the

volunteers, we will be successful.

This subject was discussed at the

last quarterly meeting and the

respective area chairs are ready

to meet the challenge. I would ask

that the volunteers step up to the

challenge and contact your area

chair and get involved. These job

fairs are going to be conducted

across the State.

The unemployment rate for units

returning from deployment is

averaging 25% and that in unac-

ceptable. We have the resources

in ESGR and the ability to reduce

that percentage. These young men

and women have gone into harm’s

way and have served proudly. Over

the years we have ignored veter-

ans and have allowed them to live

on the street or turn to a less

desirable life style. Kansas ESGR

can be a leader in educating em-

ployers on why they should hire a

veteran and assist those that have

served in finding employment.

Michael R. Allen, KS ESGR

Upcoming Events Jan 19-20, 2011 Kansas Workforce Summit, Topeka, ESGR booth

Feb 1, 2011 Kansas Works Job Fair, Bicentennial Center Salina, Booth

Mar 1-2, 2011 Kansas Employment Training Workshops, Wichita

March 25-26, 2011 National Guard state conference, Lawrence, ESGR booth

April 2011 Kansas ESGR Annual Meeting, date and location to be announced

Kansas ESGR continues to assist the Kansas National Guard and Reserve Units in deploying units and indi-

viduals to active duty and most times these men and women are going in harm’s way.

Upon their return we are finding that too many of these men and women return to civilian life and are un-

employed. Their income goes to zero and they are expected to continue to support the family they were

taken from.

If you are an Employer of a Guardsman or Reservist, we thank you for your support. Your support is un-

matched and there is no way we can properly thank you for your sacrifice while the service member is de-

ployed.

If you are an Employer that is hiring, we would strongly urge you to give a Guardsman or Reservist the op-

portunity to show you how valuable they can be. These men and women are trained, disciplined, drug free

and ready to work.

To assist us in creating jobs please contact Mr. Fred Waller, Kansas ESGR, Executive Director at 785-274-

1559 or email [email protected].

David Mayfield, Mick Allen and

Fred Waller recognize Gen.

Tod Bunting, KS Adjutant

General (Ret), for his support

of KS ESGR.

Maj. Gen Tod Bunting was in charge of the 7,700

soldiers and airmen of the Kansas Army and Air

National Guard. Soldiers from the Kansas Guard

were deployed around the world, including two

wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also was director

of Kansas Emergency Management, guiding profes-

sional personnel who responded to and mitigated

natural disasters. In addition, Bunting was direc-

tor of Homeland Security for Kansas, working to

ensure safety in the state was preserved.

General Bunting is an outstanding supporter and

partner of Kansas Employer Support of the Guard

and Reserve. He made available simulators at the

Kansas National Guard Training Center in Salina

and Ft. Riley for KS ESGR events. Employers of-

ten traveled to these sites via Blackhawk Helicop-

ters on the KS Army National Guard training

schedule.

Bunting's successor is Brig. Gen. Lee Tafanelli,

49. Tafanelli received an American flag from Bun-

ting in a symbolic passing of the guard. Tafanelli

was appointed as the state's 34th adjutant gen-

eral by Gov. Sam Brownback.

Adjutant General Lee

Tafanelli, left, re-

General Tod M. Bun-

ting during a ceremo-

nial passing of the

retirement ceremony.

Police Chief Ronnie Grice finishes paperwork before

heading home Thursday night. Grice recently received

the Patriot Award for helping deployed soldiers return

to their K-State Police Department jobs.

K-State police recognized for military support

Heather Scott, K-State Collegian

for any new procedures or technologies. "These services are a way we can let them serve, but also let them know that, ‘Hey, you can serve your country, do what you got to do and when you come back, don't worry about any-thing,'" Grice said. Of course, the phone calls and care packages go beyond assisting service members in their duty. Grice and Herrman said they want all employees to rest assured their job will still be waiting for them when they are de-mobilized. "I would think job security is priority one," Grice said. "When you are in the job market and you get called away from a job, that's going to give you something to worry about. With these guys, knowing that their job is protected is critical." Ruiz, a member of the National Reserve, was once mobilized for two years. During his time away, he learned not all employees have the same civilian job security. "I talked with other service members, and they had concerns about going back to their civilian employment," Ruiz said. "I never had a concern. Capt. Herrman and I kept in touch, and I was told that my job was there when I came back." In order to provide such excellent job security, Grice, Herrman and other members of the police department had to pick up some of the extra duties that had been performed by a service member prior to departing. "We, just as a group, cover the slack," Grice said. "Some people take on extra duties. That's the easiest way to do it, just everyone assume a different responsibility." Taking on extra duties can be a source of stress for the department, but Grice said he sees it as a necessary means of supporting military service members. His familiarity and closeness with

current and former service members is one reason he is so willing to pick up extra slack. "My dad and two uncles served in Korea, my younger brother served in the Navy for 13 years, and I have a brother-in-law who served in the National Guard and was deployed to Iraq," Grice said. "It's an honor to be recog-nized for supporting the staff and their service of the country." Herrman, a former armed forces member himself, has no trouble grasping the impor-tance of service to country, Ruiz said. "Capt. Herrman, being a veteran, understands serving the country and understands what it is to have that loyalty, that integrity and selfless service," Ruiz said. "He instills those traits in others and shows loyalty to others in the de-partment. That's what makes him a good leader." Of course, as gratifying as recognition can be, Grice said it does not compare to the safe return of an employee. "It's always a joy and a delight when you get a member of your department back who has been deployed for a year or two," Grice said. "I respect everyone who has served."

Capt. Oscar Ruiz of the K-State Police De-partment does not underestimate the impor-tance of loyalty and commitment to our coun-try. During a 10-year career in the armed forces, Ruiz said he learned firsthand that military service is only made possible by an unwaver-ing dedication to duty and a support system as sturdy as an aircraft carrier. This year, members of that military support system are being recognized for their constancy. Police Chief Ronnie Grice and Capt. Richard Herrman of the K-State Police Department each received Patriot Awards from the Na-tional Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. The award is given to employers who demonstrate excellent out-reach to employees who have been mobilized for active duty. Such outreach includes main-taining contact with the service member during his or her duty and providing work-place re-acclimation services to the employee upon return from service. Grice, who has received the Patriot Award twice before, said he understands the impor-tance of reaching out to employees serving in the military. "I've had five people deployed and one per-son deployed twice during my time here," he said. "No one wants to be deployed, but when you are, you don't want to be serving your country and worrying about your job or your career." To prevent service members from worrying, Grice and Herrman will make phone calls, send postcards and even prepare care pack-ages for the deployed employee. Upon return, the employee receives training and updates
