KPI Evaluation and Comments

Objective Measure Target Comment on AIM’s current performance

Recommendations Deadline for next update of data

Objective 1 – Conduct research that will identify actions to enhance the UK’s international competitiveness Number of articles produced by AIM Fellows and Scholars appearing in FT ranked academic journals

To be based on a Zetoc Alert search

10 articles per year (to be confirmed when baseline data are available)

Data collection is almost complete – these data will be incorporated into an AIM publications database.

We intend to make this available online via the AIM website.

1/5/09 (report quarterly)

Number of articles produced by AIM Fellows and Scholars appearing in the main practitioner journals (e.g. HBR, CMR, SMR)

To be based on a Zetoc Alert search

5 articles per year (to be confirmed when baseline data are available)

Data collection is almost complete – these data will be incorporated into an AIM publications database.

We intend to make this available online via the AIM website.

1/5/09 (report quarterly)

Number of AIM Executive Briefings published

Figure 1.3

8 executive briefings published per year

In steady state AIM has been producing between 6-10 Executive Briefings per year.

The AIM office will review existing working papers to identify potential new Executive Briefings. All Fellows will be encouraged to submit papers for consideration. A formal publishing plan for 2009 is in development.

1/5/09 (report quarterly) – last updated 4/3/09

Number of references to AIM research in major UK public policy documents

To be based on a content analysis of policy reports

Target to be proposed once baseline established

We have conducted one such content analysis previously.

Conducting the content analysis is a time intensive process that requires some skilled resource – we propose to outsource this activity to a PhD student.

1/8/09 (report annually)

Objective 2 - Raise the scientific quality and international standing of UK research on international competitiveness Number of citations to the work of AIM Fellows and Scholars

AIM bibliometrics study – using ISI Web of Science data

Target to be proposed once baseline established

We have conducted one such citation analysis previously.

Conducting the citation analysis is a time intensive process that requires some skilled resource – we propose to outsource this activity to a PhD student.

1/8/09 (report annually)

% of AIM end of award reports rated as outstanding/good by ESRC assessors

Figure 2.2 The norm for business and management is 22% outstanding, 67% good and 11% problemmatic

AIM Fellows only received awards of ‘Outstanding’ and ‘Good’ for the undertaken by the Public Service, Senior and Ghoshal Fellows. With overall % of 40% outstanding and 60% good.

RoW Australia. international capacity building and promoting the AIM brand internationally. AIM does have a significant under spend for VIF funds therefore promotion of this is required throughout all cohorts.

Number of visits to AIM website from outside the UK

Figure 2.4 Target >1500 visitors per month to AIM website, with one third from each of US, Europe (excluding UK) and RoW

The AIM website receives approximately 1,000 unique visitors per month from outside the UK. One third of the AIM website visitors are from North America, most of the other visitors come from Western Europe.

We both need to increase the absolute numbers of visitors to the website as well as targeting more Eastern European, African and Asian countries. We have initiated a review to improve the accessability and usefulness of the website.

Objective 3 - Expand the size and capacity of the active research base for UK research on management Schedule adherence to AIM capacity building events listed in the communications and engagement plan

Figure 3.1 Target is to run 12 research capacity building events per year

AIM is planning to run more capacity building events in 2009 and already have a number planned for quarter 1. The Services Fellows cohort has recently provided applications for a number of events.

No specific action required. 1/5/09 (report quarterly) – last updated 4/3/09

No. of individual attendees at AIM capacity building events

Figure 3.2 Target > 400 people to attend AIM capacity building events each year

446 people attended capacity building events in 2008. During 4 months of 2008 no capacity building events took place and one was cancelled due to poor registrations. We currently run events in Edinburgh and London.

Continue with current modes of communication, constantly updating AIM institutional contact lists.

1/5/09 (report quarterly) – last updated 4/3/09

Number of UK institutions (out of total # UK institutions) with at least one person attending AIM capacity building event in the last 12 months

Figure 3.3 Target > 70% of all UK Universities to send people on AIM capacity building events in the last twelve months

From the top 113 universities in the UK: delegates from 73% of these institutions attended AIM capacity building events.

Continue with current modes of communication, constantly updating AIM institutional contact lists.

1/5/09 (report quarterly) – last updated 4/3/09

Objective 4 - Develop the engagement of that capacity with world-class research outside the UK and with practitioners as co-producers of knowledge about management and other users of research within the UK. Schedule adherence to AIM events for business and policy listed in the communications and engagement plan.

Figure 4.1 Target is to run 24 events for practitioners and policy makers per year

AIM continued to run a number of successful events in 2008, which adhered to the planned events in 2008.

Continue to run successful events but to ensure that we plan effectively the MRFs, large events and events targeting practitioners.

updated 4/3/09

Number of visits to AIM website – broken down by academic, policy and practice communities

Figure 4.2 Target a balanced portfolio of visitors to the AIM website – 50% academic and 50% policy and practice

The AIM website still attracts significantly more academic visitors than any other category.

We have initiated a review of the AIM website to explore how we might make it more user friendly. Potential changes include the navigation on the front page and the implementation of an improved search system. We are also reviewing the AIM research summaries bringing them more into line with the AIM integrated reports.

1/5/09 (report quarterly) – last updated 4/3/09

Number of downloads from AIM website.

Figure 4.3 Target > 4,000 downloads per month (for the ten most popular AIM downloads)

The data show an increase in the number of downloads from the AIM website, currently running at > 2,500 per month.

We are adopting a targeted advertising strategy using Google Adwords to increase the number of hits (and hopefully downloads). Through more active media engagement we should also increase levels of interest in AIM’s research and outputs.

1/5/09 (report quarterly) – last updated 4/3/09

Number of press mentions for AIM Research

Figure 4.4 Target > 25 press mentions per quarter for AIM and AIM Fellows

Press mentions have both steadily increased and diversified since 2006, with significant growth in 2008 and positive projections for 2009 based on the first quarter so far.

To capitalise on the high profiles of certain fellows; to further internationalise AIM's profile; to encourage competition between AIM fellows by circulating significant press mentions. Encourage press when new reports are launched which will promote AIM brand and not just the authors.

1/5/09 (report quarterly) – last updated 4/3/09

Schedule adherence to AIM briefings with key journalists listed in the communications and engagement plan

Figure 4.5 Target is 12 meetings with journalists per year

AIM organised 9 meetings with key journalists in 2008.

AIM should organise more introductory meetings for 2009. The use of the PR company may help to identify PR opportunities that AIM Research has missed.
