TANIA KOVATS Tania Kovats, All the Sea, 2012-14; installation view, solo exhibition, The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh, 2014 Tania Kovats first came to prominence when she won the Barclays Young Artist Award at the Serpentine Gallery, London in 1991. She is renowned for producing sculptures, large-scale installations and temporal works which explore our experience and understanding of landscape. Her work was the subject of a major solo exhibition at The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh in 2014, encompassing sculptures and drawings which explored Kovats' preoccupation with the sea. Best known for her large-scale works in the public realm, Kovats produced Tree (2009), a permanent installation for the Natural History Museum where she took a thin slice from the entire length of a 200 year-old oak tree and inserted it into the museum’s ceiling; and Rivers (2012), installed in the landscape of Jupiter Artland outside Edinburgh, in which Kovats collected water from one hundred rivers around the British Isles and housed the collection in a specially constructed boathouse. She was a Rome Scholar in the Fine Arts at the British School at Rome in 1997-8 and won a Civic Trust Award for her outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the environment in 2000. In the same year, Kovats was invited to curate an exhibition at Ikon Gallery, which she called LOST. She was awarded the Henry Moore Drawing Fellowship in 2004 and was Visiting Fellow at the School of Archaeology, Oxford University in 2006. She has also recently completed a residency and commission for the Astronomy Department at the University of Cambridge. In 2010, her work was the subject of a major monograph, Tania Kovats, by Jeremy Millar and Philip Hoare, published by Lund Humphries and the Ruskin School of Drawing. Kovats has shown extensively in the UK and abroad, with solo shows, in addition to those above, at the Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester; Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield; Peer Arts, London and Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall. Group shows include those at BALTIC, Gateshead; Hayward Gallery, London; Tate Liverpool; V&A, London; Museum Of Contemporary Art, Sydney; Kettle's Yard, Cambridge; Kunstraum Innsbruck and ICA, London. Her sculptures and drawings feature in numerous collections including the Arts Council Collection, UK; The British Council, UK; Speed Art Museum, Kentucky; Royal Museums Greenwich, London; Yale Center For British Art, New Haven; Government Art Collection, UK and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Kovats was nominated for the Max Mara Art Prize for Women in collaboration with the Whitechapel Gallery: 6th Edition (2015-17). She was recently appointed Professor of Drawing at Bath Spa University and will be Guest Curator at Edinburgh International Book Festival in August 2018. She will be part of a forthcoming group show at Modern Art Oxford and will have a solo exhibition of new work at Berwick Visual Arts in 2019.
