Hoeveel

gebou vas elke keer wanneer ek by mykombuisvenster uitkyk nie, maar ses vandie tien eenhede kyk direk op my eiendomaf.

LANGKLOOF Bricks has been accola-ded with two ‘Eastern Cape Top GreenOrganisation’ awards this past week,by the Institute of Waste ManagementSouthern Africa (IWMSA), in associa-tion with the Department of EconomicDevelopment, Environmental Affairsand Tourism (DEDEAT).

Not only did this Jeffreys Bay ClayBrick manufacturer walk away with 1stPlace in the Bronze Award category,‘Small Organisation with High Environ-mental Impact’, but it also scooped theoverall Innovation Award, issued by theHead of the Department of EnvironmentalAffairs and Tourism. These awards wereissued in recognition of the innovativepractices undertaken by Langkloof Bricksto minimise its impact on the environ-ment, by means of reducing and trans-forming waste into a resource, in additionto contributing toward energy efficiency, air quality and climate change through thesuccessful implementation of the SA-VSBK (Vertical ShaftBrickKiln) technolo-gy, almost a year ago.The awards were issued at a glittering

gala dinner, at the East London Interna-tional Convention Centre, where morethan 800 high profile delegates attendedthe IWMSA’s biennial conference,WasteCon2012, which is the largest and

most comprehensive waste managementconvention in South Africa. The aim of the Awards Programme is to

promote and recognise responsible Envi-ronmental Management Practices in theEastern Cape while fostering better rela-tionships between government, industry, business and other organisations. The judging process entailed stringent

site audits by a team of waste, air quality, climate change, environmental and safetyspecialists. While each companywasmeas-ured against the same criteria, points wereissued according to the size of the organisa-tion and their commitment to reducingtheir environmental impact. It is here thatLangkloof Bricks walked away with thebronze certificate for ‘Small Organisation. All entrants were then adjudicated for

technical innovation, particularly in theareas of maximising environmental re-sources through improving air quality, protecting Biodiversity, combating cli-mate change, maximising energy efficien-cy and water usage, and also reducing, re-using or transforming waste into a re-source. It is here that Langkloof Brickswas ratedhighly for itswastemanagementsystem, and for pioneering the energy-effi-cient SA-VSBK technology in SouthAfrica– earning Langkloof Bricks the EasternCape’s Top Green Organisation - Innova-tion Award.

weivelde ontvang minder as 500 mmreënval per jaar.

Bron: Landbouweekblad

MONIQUE BASSON

TTHREE very talented youngriders from Valley Stablesjust outside Jeffreys Bay,

recently proved their mettle andreturned home jubilant withtheir outstanding performancesat the2012SouthAfricanNation-al Equestrian Schools Associa-tion (Sanesa) Nationals.

This prestigious event, that at-tracted over 3 000 equestrian class-es nationwide, was held at the Gau-teng Horse Society in the KyalamiEquestrian Park, Gauteng.

Despite being fairly ‘green’ ri-ders, and almost not being able tofind the correct arena on the firstday of the competition, these ridersnot only scooped up team awards, but they also got placed in the indi-vidual classes.

Theneal Brits from BrandwagHigh School, Gerhard Grundling(17) from Nico Malan High Schooland Jessica Fugard (15) fromGlobalLeadership Academy representedthe Eastern Cape Sanesa team anddid their province extremely proud.

Theneal showed hermettle in the80cm Showjumping A team on herhorseMontez, bywinning her class. She furthermore, secured the 8thplace in the two-phase Showjump-ing event.

According to Theneal she has

been on horseback since Grade 5,but this is the first year that she hastakenpart in an inter-school compe-tition.

Jessica, who only started ridinglast year February, competed in theA Team for 70cm Equitation and70cm Jumping events on hermountPinmac. To her biggest surprise, she not only got placed 17th out of54 horses in the Jumping event, butwas also placed third in the teamevent.

According to Jessica, who neverdreamed of taking part in competi-tions on horseback, it all startedwith her mother who wanted her tolearn to sit on a horse.

“So, one day I decided to go withmy friend, Theneal, to Valley Sta-bles to sit on a horse. From that dayonwards therewasno turning back, and sitting quickly turned into com-petitive riding.”

Gerhard, who arrived at ValleyStables only a week after Jessica, took part in the Equitation 70cm Ateam and the 70cm Showjumping Ateam events on his Valley Stables’sponsored horse Nice on Ice. Heachieved clear rounds and wasplaced third in the team event.

“Althoughwewerevery stressed,we also had a wonderful time. Onthe first day of the event, we almostdid not find the arenawherewe hadto compete. We arrived just in time, and did not even have the time towalk the course,” said Gerhard.

The Eastern Cape was placedfourth overall.

Kelly Tait (14) from Nico MalanHigh School and also a rider at Val-ley Stables, who could not competein the Sanesa Nationals due tochanginghorses in themiddle of theyear, joined her fellow riders for atraining clinic, hosted by Denton

Saunders, a well-known instructorfrom Natal, and Shirley Green, anevent specialist, before the show.“Although I could not compete thisyear, I am definitely going to com-pete at the Sanesa Nationals on myhors Pinmac next year,” said Kelly.

Gerty Anne Delpeche, owner ofValley Stables, said: “I was sur-

prised to see how well these riderscoped with the pressure.

“Whatmakes their achievementsevenmore amazing is that both Jes-sica and Gerhard’s horses are stillyoungsters and are consideredgreen in riding terms. They havedone an amazing job of schoolingtheir baby horses.”
