THE Cacadu District Municipality is set tohonour one of South Africa’s biggest struggleicons by renaming the municipality to the Sa-rah Baartman District Municipality.

This name change will not only have an ef-fect on the Cacadu District Municipality, butalso on the nine local municipalities that fallunder this municipality - including the Kougaand Koukamma.

The renaming of the municipality has offi-cially been gazetted and will take effect fromSeptember 1, adding momentum to the munici-pality’s efforts of institutionalising the new

name of Sarah Baartman District Municipality. The Council took the decision in 2012 to

change the name of the Cacadu District to Sa-rah Baartman in order to give recognition tothe icon and the role of coloured people in thefight against apartheid.

A lengthy stakeholder consultation processwas undertaken between the Cacadu DistrictMunicipality, communities of the District, po-litical leadership, and local municipalities, the South African Heritage Resources Agen-cy, as well as the South African GeographicalNames Council. Amongst the specific stake-holders consulted during the public partici-

pation process were the Khoi and the San,who were of the opinion that the changing ofthe name is an opportunity to rewrite historyand rectify the heritage of their people.

The application to change the name wasthereafter submitted to the MEC for LocalGovernment and Traditional Affairs for con-sideration and subsequent approval.

“It is an immense honour for the Districtto be officially named after an icon such asSarah Baartman. It is our intention to upholdwhat she represents and through initiativessuch as the Moral Regeneration Movementwe will continue to endeavour to restore the

dignity of the people of this District,” says Ex-ecutive Mayor of the Cacadu District Munici-pality, Khunjuzwa Eunice Kekana.

Following the completion of a new brandstrategy and corporate identity for the SarahBaartman District Municipality, the namewill be implemented using a phased approach..Sarah Baartman is an international icon, synonymous with the commitment to democ-racy by the South African Government.Baartman, of Khoikhoi descent, was born in1789, raised within the Gamtoos Valley andlaid to rest in Hankey along the banks of theGamtoos River on August 9, 2002.

Both days opened with an impressive dis-play by Kouga’s emergency and rescue servic-es. “The main purpose of the imbizo was for allof us in government to hear what our commu-nities have to say. We are grateful that peopleattended both days in numbers and sharedmatters of concern with us,” Stuurman said.

“As local governors, we are accountable tothe people. Our promise is that we will takethis responsibility seriously and create moreopportunities such as this for communities toconnect with government.”

THE Jeffreys Bay Post Office is set to become more disa-bled friendly in the near future.

Although the post office already caters to some extentfor people with disabilities, local disabled communitymembers and the Organisation for and from people withDisabilities South Africa (OPD) feel that still more canbe done to ensure a trip to the post office is a pleasantexperience.Jos and Dette van den Boogaard from the OPD have

set the wheels rolling and prepared a report on the acces-sibility of the post office.“We regularly receive complaints from residents who

struggle to collect their mail or conduct business at thepost office,” says Jos.“The report has been prepared on the basis of the

current South African Law and we have come to theconclusion that there is still a lot of room for improve-ment.“On the advice of the manager at the post office, we

sent it to their head quarters and after receiving no feed-back, we also sent it to the Human Rights Commission.”According to Jos, the Commission found their com-

plaints valid and instructed the Jeffreys Bay Post Officeto implement the necessary improvements to make thebuilding more accessible to residents living with disabili-ties.Cheryl Kemp from the South African Post Office says:

“A counter point was lowered to accommodate people inwheelchairs. Furthermore, a quotation was obtained forthe extension of the ramp in front of the post office. Twoparking spaces for people with disabilities were identi-fied and an application was forwarded to the Traffic De-partment for the necessary signage.”

Dalk, net dalk, skrik iemand hierdie week wakker.

SOMETIMES the smallest act of kindness cantake up the biggest space in someone’s heart.

This is themotto Jeffreys Bay resident Annle Roux, her mother, Beverley Terblanche, and aunt, Annette Swift, live by. For thiskind-hearted trio there is no better way tospread some kindness, than by sharing afreshly baked cake or tart with a completestranger in need. For them the delicious icing, the magical

flavours and the beautiful decorations worktogether to create amoment of pure bliss. Thepreparation, planning, hard work and lovethat goes into a homemade cake or tart makeit all the more special. For Ann, who often gives to the less fortu-

been spreading the sweet joy of cake, cup-cakes andmilk tarts in JeffreysBay - bringingsmiles to the less fortunate and people in needof a little bit of love and appreciation, includ-ing car guards and police officers.Something they’ll be doing again andagain.“Imagine what a wonderful place the world

would be if each one of us do one good deeda day,” says Ann who is working on her 67hats and cupacakes for Madiba Day project.“If it were not for my limited funds, I wouldbakemore cakes anddomore good for thepeo-ple in our community.”Beverley says: “We can be very selfish at

times. It is our tendency to always want to re-ceive, thatwe forget howmuchpleasure thereis in giving to someone in need.”Ann wants to inspire residents all over the

JANNIE HOUGH

’n Onbekende, maar wyse, Anonieme hetaangaande intelligensie geskryf: “Grootdenkers bespreek idees. Middelmatige den-kers bespreek gebeure.

“My pa is my rolmodel en inspirasie as ditby hardloop kom. Hy druk my nooit onnodignie en laat my toe om my eie ding te doen,”sê Valentino.
