The Kootenay FestivalOf The Arts 2016

Te Kootenay Music Festival had its inception withrepresentatives of the Trail Veteran’s Orchestra and theNelson Symphony Orchestra setting up a joint commit-tee to plan for a Kootenay wide festival in the spring of1930. Tese words were originally written for the rstfestival.

A music festival is a good thing in itself. It is chie   y bene cialto the young who through the competitions have an opportu-nity of learning much about music that they could learn in noother way.Te fact that the festival is to be held annually willencourage interest in music generally as the competitors haveto spend months in practicing for the contests.Tis venerable two week festival has been a cultural

cornerstone of the history of Nelson and Trail and all thesurrounding communities since 1930. Indeed, it is oneof the oldest festival traditions in British Columbia. Itsgoals have always been to inspire, educate, evaluate andpromote regional students in the performing arts disci-plines of piano, strings, voice, choral, dance, drama andspeech arts. Te festival supports the many disciplines ofperforming arts teaching in our region, through schoolsand private teachers. Te Kootenay Festival of the Artshas embraced new forms of performing arts expression, while respecting and upholding the historical forms.

Nelson will be hosting the festival this year! Check outthe website, www.kootenayfestivalofhearts.ca for the syl-labus, registration forms, donations, inquiries and contactinformation. Te dates for the 2016 Kootenay Festival ofthe Arts is listed below:

    Dance: March 30 - April 2.

Highlights Concert at the CapitolTeatre: April 2.

    Speech Arts; Vocal/choral; Strings; Guitar; Piano;

Woodwinds: April 11 - 6.Highlights Concert at the CapitolTeatre: April 16.

Completed entry forms must be surface posted or cou-riered, and received by the January 31 deadline. Entriessubmitted afer the closing date will be accepted up toFebruary 10 and MUST include a late entry fee of $10 perentry in addition to the regular entry fee.

WRITING A CLASSIFIED AD THAT WORKS!

    • Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes. What details would youwant to know about an item you were interested in buying?

    • Include the brand name (manufacturers spend mil-lions promoting the name and enhancing the imageof their products, so take advantage of it). Would yourather buy a refrigerator or a Frigidaire?

    • List the item’s best features and what makes youritem different from others in the same category. (Re-member, the more you tell, the clearer picture a poten-tial buyer gets, making it easier for you to sell.)

    Feldenkrais Method

Release Pain & Stress, Increase Flexibil-ity, Strength and Balance.

If you have a back pain, sore neck and shoul-

ders, feet, knee or hip problems, Feldenkraiscan help. It teaches you how your movementpatterns are creating your pain or discomfort. We think pain limits our movement, but theopposite may also be true, the way we movemay be causing our pain.

One of the problems of being human is thatunlike animals, we are born not knowing howto move. We haphazardly copy the patterns ofour parents, often picking up their bad habits.

In class we take everyday functions likewalking, sitting, reaching, lifting, turning, getting up from the floor etc. and find theeasiest, and most pleasurable way of doingthem. We focus on moving from our skele-tons, not just from our muscles.

Learning Feldenkrais can help prevent andrelieve many of the limitations of aging, helpheal from accidents, improve performance, keep your brain active and improve qualityof life.

Susan Grimble B.Ed is a Guild CertifiedFeldenkrais Practitioner with 12 years experi-

ence. She previously worked as a Rolfer (deeptissue massage ) for 16 years.

    The Relationship BetweenIncome And Health

According to a recent report about in-come-related health inequalities in Canada,on a national level we collectively spendmore than $200 billion a year on publiclyfunded health care. Here in British Columbiaour health care is almost 50 per cent of ourprovincial budget. But despite all this spend-ing, those who are richer enjoy better healthand live longer than those who are poor.

Our health is most impacted by social deter-minants – things like stable housing, having a job, access to education, and a steady incomecan make us healthier. It’s all connected – ifyou have a job and a steady income, you aremore likely to be able to find the resources toimprove your education or the education ofyour children. With an advanced education, you are more likely to have a higher incomeand be able to afford safe and stable housing. If you have affordable housing, you are lesslikely to have to choose between buyinghealthy food and paying the rent and thatmeans you can eat a healthier diet.

Health indicators like obesity, smokingrates, and child mortality paint a picture oftwo different worlds – the poorest Canadiansare challenged by these problems muchmore than those who are economicallyadvantaged.

Universal health care, like we have inCanada, is a cornerstone to a more equita-ble society in terms of access to health care.

We can also help decrease health inequitiesby investing in affordable housing, improv-ing access to education, and supportingpoverty reduction planning programs in ourcommunities.

    After all, every person matters.
