Most o us have seen a riend or amilymember’s marriage go bust in a bitter divorce.Sometimes the couple’s children are victimsin their parents’ ongoing conict long aferthe break-up. One parent, ofen the primarycaregiver, may inuence the kids to take sidesand subtly turn them against the other parent.

Undermining the kids’ relationship with theother parent, even unintentionally, damages

children’s emotional and psychological well-being and is contrary to the Family Law Act.  Tis phenomenon is called “parentalalienation” and may lead to children notwanting to see or have anything to do withthat other parent. When a child’s previouslyclose relationship with both parents turnssour with one parent without good reason, that’s a hallmark o parental alienation.

Our BC Supreme Court recently had todeal with parental alienation. Colin and

Claire (all names changed) had two kids,Mary and Becky, born in 2000 and 2002.Te couple separated in 2008 and divorcedthree years later. Both parents were intelligentand capable individuals who loved theirchildren, and they agreed to equal parentingarrangements. Te court subsequently gavethem joint custody and joint guardianship othe kids and ordered a three-day alternatingparenting schedule, later changed by Colinand Claire to a ve-day alternating schedule.

Tese arrangements worked well initially, but over time the kids became increasinglyreluctant to spend time with their dad. Oneexample: in late 2011 when Claire droppedBecky off to see Colin, Becky ran back to hermom’s car, buckled hersel in and reused tocome out or hal an hour despite her dad’spleading. By 2013, when Colin was to pick

the girls up rom a church drop-off, or wasto take them afer school, he couldn’t becausethey ran away. Tey also reused to see himduring a court-ordered holiday access. Wheninterviewed by a psychologist, both childrenexpressed strong negative views o theirather, but positive ones o their mother.

Colin thus asked the court or a “custodyreversal order” and other orders to help

    resolve the problem.

Te court concluded the children werea product o parental alienation – theirnegative eelings and rejection o their dadwas signicantly out o line with their actualexperience with him. Both Mary and Beckysuffered rom emotional and mental healthproblems – the older girl rom depression andsuicidal thoughts, her younger sister rom ananxiety disorder and anger issues.

Te ocus in such cases is on the bestinterests o the children long-term. Te courtintervened in an effort to undo the girls’alienation rom their dad, to oster theiruture relationship with both parents and tominimize emotional damage.

Colin got sole guardianship, interimcustody and primary residence o the twogirls or the time being, and Claire was tohave no direct or indirect access to them.Claire, Colin and the children also had to

enroll in a amily reunication program ora year (the program’s director would makeregular progress reports to the court).

Parental alienation situations are complex, and each case requires a unique solution. It’simportant you act quickly and get legal andother help promptly i you’re caught up insuch a conict-ridden situation.

    Kaslo Trailblazers Unity BridgeConstruction Begins

It is ofen said that good things come to those who wait.Well, we have waited since 2007, and that’s long enough. We’realking about the new 5th Street Unity Bridge across the Kaslo

River. Tis bridge will complete the Kaslo River rail loop.

Building has started. Construction has begun on theabutments with rip-rap placed to protect the north sidebank and concrete wings. Cement or the ootings on thenorth side was poured the week o April 7 and lefover con-crete was used to make more retaining blocks. Volunteersare also busy staining all timber or this new pedestrian

bridge, the same rich raspberrycolour as the rst bridge. Wework on this most uesdays,Tursdays and Saturdays rom10 am to 3 pm and are grateulor any volunteers who can joinus or a ew hours on these days.Every little bit helps.

Te steel structure was con-structed during the winterand will be delivered to us forassembly during early May.We plan to put the whole steeland timber structure togetheron land in May, number all thepieces, remove the wood andthen place the steel frameworkon its foundations. Once thesteel structure is in place span-ning the river, the wood partswill be put back and we willhave a bridge! How pleasant itwill be to cross this new bridgeand avoid the highway duringthe busy summer months! It

should be especially gratifyingfor our numerous supporterswho sponsored bridge plaquesto help cover part of our costs.

Everyone who has seen theconstruction start has com-mented positively. We haveplaque sponsors rom ninecountries plus all the provincesexcept Ontario and Quebec. We’re always looking or riends
