Congratulations TKIS athletes!

Students gain Japanese and Chinese cultural insights

2 Champions at Equestrian Nationals and 5 qualify for State AthleticsOur athletes have once again blazed a trail for TKIS in Athletics and Equestrian by living up to the school spirit of “being the best that you can be”.

In Equestrian, Chelsea (Grade 9) and Felicity (Grade 8) were part of the Queensland Team competing at the 2017 Australian Interschool Equestrian Championships. Felicity Shearer was the Champion in Intermediate 1 Dressage and 4th in Prix St Georges Dressage. Chelsea Gatti was the Reserve Champion in Combined Training. Congatulations on your amazing achievements, Felicity and Chelsea!

Chelsea not only impressed with her Equestrian abilities and achievements, she impressed the Chef D’Equipe of the National Team with her attitude and demeanour — “her very open, sincere and courteous manner and genuine smile.”

In Athletics, Ryan (Grade 12), Jayda (Grade 11), Kyle (Grade 11), Georgia (Grade 10) and Chloe B. (Grade 9) qualified for the Interschool State Athletics Championships, all of them clocking new Personal Best efforts at the Regional Qualifiers. Ryan will be competing in the 110m Hurdles and 400m Hurdles, Jayda and Chloe in High Jump, Kyle in Discus and Georgia in Hammer Throw.

Well done to all the athletes who have represented TKIS in interschool competitions this year, and good luck to Ryan, Jayda, Kyle, Georgia and Chloe on their upcoming competitions! Go Kooralbyn!

Chinese students sharing a game with our Grade 1-2 students.

In Term 3, our students had the opportunity to spend a few days with a group of students from Shanghai, China. The visitors introduced us to Chinese martial arts exercises, traditional Chinese dance and popular Chinese music.

We also had students from Osaka, Japan, join us last term. With their help, our students in Japanese class participated in the tradition of Senzabaru — a thousand origami cranes. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds 1000 origami cranes will be granted a wish by the gods. This makes origami cranes popular gifts for special friends and family.

Athletes competing at the upcoming Interschool State Athletics Championships — Jayda (Grade 11), Chloe B. (Grade 9), Kyle (Grade 11) and Ryan (Grade 12), with Mr McCarron (Athletics Coordinator). Georgia (Grade 10) also qualified to compete but was absent when the photo was taken.

Felicity (Grade 8) and Chelsea (Grade 9) represented Queensland at the National Interschool Equestrian Championships. Felicity was the Champion in Intermediate 1 Dressage and 4th in Prix St Georges Dressage. Chelsea Gatti was the Reserve Champion in Combined Training.

Dear Mr Mills,

Last week I was in Toowoomba at the Marcus Oldham National Interschool Equestrian Championships. I have met Chelsea Gatti on a number of occasions at the various Regional and Interschool competitions in the South East and have always been impressed by her attitude and demeanour.

In my capacity as Chef D’Equipe for the Queensland Team I would like to sincerely congratulate Chelsea on her success with her horse ‘Bordershow Versace’. In the Combined Training 60cms discipline which involves both dressage and a show jump round, she was awarded the Australian Interschool Reserve Champion.

Chelsea continues to be an inspiration to all riders, both able-bodied and para, and I wish her every success in the future. She impresses by her very open, sincere and courteous manner and genuine smile.

Kind Regards,Anna StarostaChef D’Equipe National Team 2017

Stage 3 of the Lower Campus building project, which includes the construction of roads, carpark and the new D block (as depicted in the artist’s impression), where the new Art room, Drama room and computer labs will be located, will commence next month. Meanwhile, building work on the new A Block, where the new dorms, reception and admin, kitchen, dining hall and canteen will be located, is schduled to be completed in November.

The Junior Optiminds (Social Science) team in their own-made costumes, tackling the age old “Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?” dilemma.

The Junior Optiminds (Science and Engineering) team with their solution to “a dwelling that can assemble and flat pack with a single activation”.

Optiminds 2017 was another successful event for our students. This year our teams consisted solely of Primary School students. However, they all put in a fantastic effort to produce a great product for presentation. Students attended John Paul College at Daisy Hill on Saturday 26th August and there were hundreds of competing students from over a hundred schools in the South Brisbane region.

Our first team was our Science and Engineering team, consisting of Grade 6 students – Eva, Arlia, Marietta, Billie and Dannan. The girls had to build a dwelling that was able to assemble and flat pack

with only a single activation. After a very slow (and worrying) start they were able to pull their presentation together at the very last minute. This team learned a valuable lesson on team work, time management and reading the task requirements — skills that I hope the Grade 6 girls will carry with them into their high school years.

Our second team was a Social Science team, consisting of Stella (Grade 4), Maddison (Grade 5), Daisy (Grade 4), Molly (Grade 4) and Annabelle (Grade 6). Our young students had never attended an Optiminds presentation day before and although they had the additional setback of missing their

senior team member, Annabelle, who was sick on that day, they performed extremely well. The team was set the task of deciding whether the tomato belongs with the fruits or the vegies. They had to present a situation which demonstrated the struggle the groups have and also a solution to the age old question: “Is the tomato a fruit or a vegetable?” This group also presented well, in fantastic self-made costumes and a script that was developed independent of adult help. These girls effectively used the entire time allocated to developing their characters and storyline, and showed remarkable resilience when presented with harsh feedback.

I would like to offer a huge congratulations to our teams for their dedication to the performance and the process. Also thank you to the parents for transporting students to and from the event, for hanging out all day and for letting their children expand their abilities through independent design and development of their ideas. Finally to Dr Tilley, for once again giving up her Saturday to be our school’s representative as a judge on the day.

I look forward to the 2018 Optiminds challenege.

Ms O’Shannessy, Optiminds Coordinator

This year the Digital Media Mastery students went on an excursion to the Beaudesert Show. During their time there, they captured photos of the show and chose their best photo for the Show’s Snapshot of the Show competition. Some of them even took home awards from their entries into the Beaudesert Show’s Photography section.

The Photography section has a structure of 5 categories: Monochrome, Pictorial, People, Nature and Experimental. Many of the Digital Media students entered two photos each into the Show. Six of the students walked away with awards from their categories. These students are Emma (Grade 7), Madison (Grade 7), Teagan (Grade 7) and Edward (Grade 8) for the Junior categories and

Athena-Jo (Grade 10) and Eden (Grade 12) for the Open categories.

Emma was awarded a 1st prize, 2nd prize and Champion in the Pictorial category. Madison was awarded a 2nd prize in the Nature category and a Highly Commended in the People category. Prep-Grade 1 with Mrs Boyd

Grade 1 - 2 with Mrs Baldwin

Prep and Grade 1 students have had a busy and enjoyable Term 3.

They participated in the Fire Education program with firefighters Adrian, Bryce and Aimee. Students prepared fire evacuation plans for their homes and explained them to the fire fighters. As a reward for their excellent plans, they were given a tour of the fire truck. They enjoyed learning about the different equipment on the truck and how to use the fire hose before getting the opportunity to hop in the front of the fire truck to press the sirens and pretend to drive.

Recently, our Prep and Grade 1 class also went on an excursion to the Beaudesert Show. Students recounted their favourite parts of the day as visiting the

animal

nursery, having a picnic with their teachers, buying show bags and the exciting bus trip to and from the show. They are to be congratulated on their outstanding behaviour at the Show.

Students also got to experience the fun of the Book Fair including buddy reading with students from the Grade 3-4 class. They chose their own books to read to the Grade 3-4 students and it was a great opportunity for them to practise their reading skills as well as their listening skills as they listened to the brilliant reading from Grade 3-4 students.

Congratulations to our Students of the Week: Kodie (Week 6), Archie (Week 7), Dax (Week 8) and Hunter (Week 9).

Mrs Boyd, Prep-Grade 1 Teacher

Term 3 was a busy term in the 1-2 classroom, with lots of work being done and so much progress happening with the students! As we focused on retells in our writing this term, I saw a big improvement in most students’ retells of the stories they read for their reading test. This was pleasing evidence that not only did the students enjoy the work we did on stories, they also absorbed what a good retell should entail.

I tried something different with spelling this term and steered away from sight words, focusing instead on specific sounds that have proven troublesome to the students this year. I am really happy with how the students

progressed with this approach. Many of our students showed quite a bit of improvement on our end of term sounds test.

We spent our HPE sessions looking at healthy eating and healthy lifestyles and the students loved the hands on approach that these lessons took, with lots of searching and sorting of food pictures. I hope this encouraged the Grade 1-2 students to eat more fruit and vegetables as they learned all about how foods can fuel our bodies and how they affect the way we feel.

I look forward to a fun-filled Term 4 and will see you all after the holidays!

Mrs Baldwin, Grade 1-2 Teacher

Grade 3 - 4 with Ms PittThe students of Grade 3-4 have been busy exploring many different concepts in Term 3.

In English, they have been studying historical recounts. The class has been focusing on texts from the First Fleet in 1788. The students chose a character profile each and wrote a recount in the persona of their chosen character about the events that led up to the First Fleet and some of the challenges they faced on the journey. The class then presented their recounts to an audience.

In Mathematics, the students have been learning about a range of concepts using hands-on activities and materials. They have been investigating equivalent and improper fractions, ordering fractions on a number line and applying their understanding to solve problems. In measurement, the students investigated standard and

informal units of measurement and have been learning about different scaled instruments to measure and compare length, mass, capacity and temperature.

In Science, the students are exploring forces. For their assessment they had to design a 60-second individual game which used forces. The students then played the games and reviewed the games created by their peers. The students identified and explained what forces were present and learned what adjustments needed to be made and how to make the games more challenging. They really enjoyed designing their 60-second individual game.

Congratulations to the Students of the Week: Eloise (Week 6), Dakota (Week 7), Talieyah (Week 8) and Gabriel (Week 9).

In Term 3, Grade 2-3 have been investigating how things move using push and pull forces. We looked at

how air, water and other influences help objects to move. The children made a paper helicopter which

we took outside and watched it fly in the air. In our assessment, we produced a boat out of recycled

products and investigated whether it was able to float or sink. While the Grade 2 students were investigating forces, Grade 3 students took it one step further and investigated how heat could move from one object to another. We also looked at the safety rules we need to follow when dealing with heat.

In English, we worked on procedural text retell. We looked at a lot of procedures and activities and learned how to write both a directional and an instructional text. We worked on measurement and had a lot of fun using rice, water and sand to learn about the capacity and area of different items. All in all we worked really hard at our learning this term and had lots of fun while doing it.

This term, as part of writing recounts, the Grade 4-5 students wrote term roundups for the newsletter. We are pleased to present the winning recount, as voted by our class!

Ms Milne, Grade 4-5 Teacher

Recount of Term 3 in Class 4-5By Stella and DaisyThis term in Miss Milnes’ class we’ve had a lot of fun learning and achieving our goals. What could be more fun than learning? Is this Miss Milnes’ sarcasm or the fact we have all been achieving goal after goal? We have all worked hard and extended our learning (and our vocabulary).

This term in Maths we have done lots of division! At the start we found division very difficult, but once Miss

Milne explained all the steps and a lot of easy methods, we could figure out the answer. This term we also learned how to do multiplication with 2 digits. We learned a lot of methods for this unit, but I used the column method. We got to play a variety of games this term (mostly maths related).

English has been very challenging this term. Miss Milne has tested our skills and abilities to help us to be the best we can be. We spent the term working on recounts and retells. This included writing biographies on Australian Leaders who were making change. It didn’t have to be presidents or famous people, but people who were making the world better. We also spent a lot of time this term reading novels. The first novel was Surviving Sydney Cove, which was a historical narrative

and recount of someone who came to Australia in the First Fleet. The second novel was a book called Wonder. We all became invested in the story of Auggie who was born with a defect.

In Geography during Term 3 we compared Australia to another country. We learned about mapping, researching, population analysis, climate and weather, natural resources, and landmarks and landforms. In Science, we investigated how forces occur, why they occur and when they occur. We created games for the younger students in Prep-Grade 2 that investigated different forces.

Of course, Term 3 allowed for us to have a lot of fun! We had a very special visitor, Dylan Adkins from Queensland Sport, who plays volleyball and hopes to compete at

the Commonwealth Games. Fun Day was a lot of fun (this didn’t surprise me because of its name). My class loved Fun Day and we were named the official Fun Day Winners based on behaviour and participation. As part of our reward, we were given money to spend at the Book Fair. The Book Fair was an amazing experience and a great idea because it gets a lot of kids from our school reading. We also had our visit to the Beaudesert Show, where we learned a lot about our world and agriculture.

Term 3 has been a term for improvements and working hard. This is very important to our class and Miss Milne, and she loves to help us learn to be the best we can be. We are sure that Term 4 will be packed with even more fun (after 2 weeks of well-deserved holidays)!

Grade 5 - 6 with Mr Thomson

Term 3 Week 10, 2017, Page 14primary classroom roundup

Another busy term has ended for the Grade 5-6 students. Recently the students attended the Beaudesert Show and it was a great day. They attended a number of information sessions presented by various rural industries (beef, dairy and poultry) and also heard from emergency services. The most popular activity was entering the enclosure with the animals and petting the goats, chooks, ducks and other animals. Congratulations to all the students who won prizes for their art work at the Show.

In Geography, we looked beyond Australia to the chronic water shortages some countries face and in particular their lack of access to clean water. They learned about the health issues associated with dirty water and how it is a leading cause of infant mortality. We also investigated how the various major cities obtain their water. In Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, over 90% of their water is supplied by dams and by contrast, over 45% of Perth’s water comes from desalination and a further 45% from artesian sources and only 4% from dams.

All students have now finished their autobiographies and they varied in length from two pages to ten pages. Some students provided many details about their lives and

they made for very interesting reading. Students can be very honest about things. The final tasks were news reports. The students investigated the structure of a news report (headline, orientation, main text, photo, caption, and reorientation) and wrote several reports on real or imaginary events.

In Science, we moved on to looking at what materials conduct electricity, how we generate electricity and the problems we face when there is no electricity. The class also investigated air pressure and forces through a number of experiments. They enjoyed throwing a raw egg as hard as possible at a suspended sheet and discovering that it did not break. I think they found it even more enjoyable to splatter the egg later to prove it was indeed raw and not hard boiled. We also did the egg-in-the-bottle experiment.

Mapping, coordinates and using scales on a map to determine distances were the focus in Maths. The students had to identify various features on a map, show the shortest route from A to B, follow directions to end up at the correct destination and learn that the X (horizontal) coordinate is always given before the Y (vertical) coordinate. The students also did a lot more work on probability and learned

to use a small sample to predict results with a larger sample. They learned how samples were used to predict election results and how probability was used to determine the likelihood of certain events occurring.

I wish everyone an enjoyable holiday.

Next door at Pre-PrepWe have had so much fun in Pre-prep, spending most morning sessions letting off steam by doing sports. So far this term, we have made a sensory cloud and had a wonderful time getting covered in flour and playing with it, forming shapes and animals. We have also worked really hard on our literacy and numbers, getting prepared for next term when the Pre-Preps join Mrs Boyd’s Prep class. We can’t wait to join them and explore new things.

This term, we have even been doctors for the day and learned

where our heart, lungs, liver and other organs go. We followed with a discussion on healthy eating and we made a healthy eating chart from magazine cut-outs. We now know what ‘good choice’ foods and ‘sometimes’ foods are.

We also had lots of fun getting artistic and making our Father’s Day craft. We couldn’t wait to give it to our dads.

So many wonderful things to learn and experience.

Science with Dr Tilley

Agricultural Practices

Grade 7-8 ScienceRocks, minerals and mining filled our term in the Grade 7-8 classes. Students created an array of wonderful posters, models, PowerPoint presentations, flash cards and written tasks which included how rocks are formed, how mines work and the properties of minerals.

They also examined a huge range of rocks and learned how to identify the main rock types.

Grade 9 ScienceStudents had fun with chemical reactions this term. The unit was very hands-on and they got to practise their chemistry skills. They really enjoyed making a pH indicator from red cabbage and

used this to create a rainbow of colour, testing the pH of mystery household chemicals.

They also looked at natural radioactivity and the decay of radioactive substances. Students selected a radioisotope to investigate and created their own superhero with super powers based around that isotope.

BiologyIn Term 2, students planned and executed an extended experiment. They could select any topic related to plants to investigate. This term, students have been learning about genetics and DNA. It has been a busy term with students completing an assignment on genetically modified food and an end of term examination.

What a busy year our Agricultural Practices Students have had. In Term 2, students completed a unit on cattle. They went out to the Tilley farm for their practical, where they learned how to give an injection to a cow, practicing first on an orange in the classroom. The students worked with the weaners they had previously vaccinated and ear-tagged in Term 1.

In Term 3, students learned some basic horse-handling skills and developed a plan for caring for a horse of their choice. They learned how to approach a horse, how to apply a halter and safely lead a horse. They also examined a hoof and groomed a horse.

Practicing their equine skills — approaching a horse, applying a halter, leading a horse, examining hooves and grooming a horse.
