    FOREWORD

Environment and climate change hasbecome an urgent and pervasivepreoccupation across the globe. It isa global challenge which requires anambitious global response. India andother developing countries would be

among those most seriouslyimpacted by the consequences ofclimate change. It is for this reasonthat India, along with its partners, hasbeen playing an active andconstructive role in the ongoingmultilateral negotiations under theUN framework convention on climatechange.

We have the moral responsibility tobequeath to our children a world

which is safe, clean and productive. Aworld which should continue toinspire the human imagination withthe immensity of Blue Ocean, theloftiness of snow-covered mountains, the green expanse of extensiveforests, and the silver streams ofbeautiful rivers. Let us pledge that wewill protect our beautiful green beltof Kokan (please see page 5).

    MAP OF KOKAN DIVISION

Kokni Muslims originate from the area on the West Coast ofMaharashtra in India. The Kokni Muslims are a seafaring peopleand their main sources of livelihood are farming and fishing. The Arabs had been trading with the Costal Indians longbefore the coming of Islam and in time a trading relationshipwas established. By the time the Arabs preached the word ofIslam in Arabia, links between the Kokni's and Arabs werecenturies old. The Kokni's retained their rich cultural heritageand continued to live in peace and harmony with other

communities. At the turn of this century many Koknis hadmoved out of India in search of employment, mainly to the new

British colonies in Africa where they became successful traders, businessmen and skilled workers. Many Koknis took up Britishcitizenship and settled down in these new colonies mainlyKenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rhodesia. However, after twogenerations in the 1960's and 1970's these colonies startedgaining their Independence. The Independent countriesstarted their own Africanisation programmes and some ofthese settlers because of political reasons, immigrated to otherparts of the world. Koknis who migrated to the United Kingdomform the bulk of the community and are mainly settled in thebig cities. Some who migrated to Britain from the Indian Sub-Continent for further education, settled there after completing

their education because of the demand in their professionsand skills.

    Kokani Muslimsspeak Kokani, aMarathi dialect,peculiar to thec o m m u n i t y .T h e y a r edescendants ofArab traders.

Kokani Muslims are heavily involved in the merchant navy, shipbuilding, and textile industries in India. Most in villages are

also involved into farming and fishing, whereas many work asexpatriates in Gulf countries. They trace their ancestry back tothe Arab traders who arrived on the Western coast of Indiaduring the medieval era. The Diaspora spread out around Indiaand the rest of the world but maintains their strong sense ofcommunity and identity. The Kokani Muslims possess most ofthe important attributes of an ethnic group. Like the Moplas ofMalabar, they are the progeny of Arab immigrants and Indianwomen, they speak the same dialect of Kokani language, andmarry among themselves, in anthropological terms they aregenerally endogamous. Yet, according to Dr. A.R. Momin, "theKokani Muslim community has a well defined system of ranking

and stratification. They frequently have fair skin, and light eyes.

    Center of Learning:

Ismail Yusuf CollegePerched on a palm-girt hillock, dominating the surrounding rural terrain, theIsmail Yusuf College (IY College) has a picturesque natural setting. Far from thecrowd and the noise of city life, this centre of Islamic Study and culture in Kokanarea provides an ideal atmosphere for serious study and the pursuit ofscholarship and research. Because of the cosmopolitan culture which permeatesthe College. One hardly, thinks of its origin as a Muslim foundation. The broad-based culture and wide sympathies which have characterized its successiveprincipals and teachers have enabled it, while keeping intact its central purposeas a seat of Islamic learning, to harmonize that purpose with the growing needsof a heterogeneous student population.

Self-contained and compact, and fortunatein the possession of a campus, rare for aconstituent College of a city university, thisinstitution has an ethos of its own. Itsseclusion, however, has not kept the life andspirit of this educational centre confined toits immediate vicinity.

The Ismail Yusuf College is in many ways aunique institution. It is not just one of themany colleges in Bombay. It has a distinctatmosphere, its special subjects, andcharacteristically picturesque surroundings.Though it owes its existence to the princelydonation of 8 lakhs of rupees made by SirMohamed Yusuf, Kt., as far back as 1914 forthe higher education of Muslims, the IsmailYusuf College has, right from the beginning, been a cosmopolitan, not a “segregate”,institution where the young men andwomen of different communities learn to

live and work together in perfect harmonyand mutual trust during the mostimpressionable years of their lives. While theCollege provides a large number ofscholarships to enable the poorer Muslimstudents to have the benefit of highereducation, and while it specializes in classicalArabic and Persian and Islamic Studies. TheCollege is a full-fledged Arts, Commerceand Science Government College whoseportals are open to all who seek an all-rounduniversity education. Under the wiseguidance of its first principal, Dr. BazlurRehman, a man of wide sympathies andbroad vision, the College had laid well andtruly the foundations of a broad-basedcosmopolitan and humane culture. Evenduring the most trying days of communaltension the serene atmosphere of thisinstitution was unclouded by any communalbitterness. Today the College has expanded

into a model institution catering to the ever-increasing educational needs of the Kokanarea.

The College has provided a platform to menas varied and eminent as Mahatma Gandhi,Netaji Subhash Bose, Mr. M.A. Jinnah, PanditNehru, Justice M.C. Chagla, Mr. Liaquat AliKhan, Shri S.K. Patil, Shri Morarji Desai andDr. M.R. Jaykar, Dr. Rafque Zakaria andBarrister A. R. Antulay. Unlike the othercolleges, it is self-contained; it is luckyenough to have a campus thataccommodates its hostels, playgrounds, andgymkhana, gymnasium and N.C.C. head-quarters. The College activities, however, arenot restricted to its campus. It has tried tofoster inter-Collegiate contracts byorganizing competitions in elocution anddramatics in English and Urdu.

PITTSBURGH - Prime Minister Dr. Man-mohan Singh  has welcomed a decision

to make the Group of 20 as the premierforum for global economic decisions, saying the views of fast growing devel-oping countries like India, China andBrazil have to be taken into account foroptimum impact.

“With the rise of Asia, with growth ofIndia, China and Brazil, the economicdecision-making has to take into accountthe views of these countries if it is tohave an optimum impact,” Singh said at

    a post-summit news conference.

The prime minister said the Group ofEight, the once elite club of rich industrial

nations, was “ill-equipped” to handle allglobal issues.

“Interdependence in a globalised worldmeans that no country, however power-ful it may be, can take on the entireburden of economic adjustment andeconomic decision-making,” he said.

“It is that perception and that realitywhich has, I think, persuaded many peo-ple in Europe and the United States thatthis G8 is ill-equipped to handle all theglobal issues,” he said.

The just concluded G-20 summit ofworld’s top economies, reflecting 90 per-cent of global economic output, agreed

to make the group the premier forum fordecisions affecting the world economy, eclipsing the G8.
