Dear Colleagues,
It is our great pleasure to invite you to the 7th congress of our society.
The aim of the meeting is to provide a forum for the presentation and
exchange of research findings and innovative ideas regarding orthodontic
therapy. Some very important problems will be discussed: the less
fortunate cases regarding the incidence of the iatrogenic diseases, as well
as the means for keeping the best results of retention.
We are honored that well-known researchers from Mexic, England, Italy,
Germany and Romania have agreed to be keynote speakers.
Choosing Sibiu as the place to held this congress gives the participants the
oportunity to get acquainted with a city and a community with an
outstanding European tradition of interculturalism.
This lived, cultivated and practiced which got international recognition as
Sibiu was voted the European Cultural Capital in 2007.
Dear participants, I hope that the meeting will not only be an enriching

ROBERTO JUSTUS (MEXIC) Roberto Justus graduated in 1965 both from the National Autonomous University of Mexico School of Dentistry with his dental degree with honors and simultaneously, also from the School of Sciences as a Physicist. He went on to obtain his Certificate in Orthodontics and MSD from the Univ. of Washington in 1968.
He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) since 1990 and recertified in 2001; Professor of undergraduate orthodontics, Technologic Univ. of Mexico since 1973; Professor and Director of Research, Graduate Dept. of Orthodontics, Intercontinental University since 1990; Founder and examiner of the Mexican Board of Orthodontics since 1998; Associate Editor of the World Federation of Orthodontists’ Gazette 2001-2010; Examiner/Consultant of the ABO Clinical Exam since 2002; President of the College of Diplomates of the ABO, 2003-2004; President of the Foundation of the College of Diplomates of the ABO, 2004-2005; and President of the World Federation of Orthodontists, 2010-2015. He received ABO’s “2011 Dale B. Wade Award”; was the “2012 Kokich-Shapiro Visiting Scholar”, Univ. of Wash., Dept. of Orthodontics; and received AAOF’s “2013 Louise Ada Jarabak Memorial International Orthodontic Teachers and Research Award”. He has published twenty eight scientific papers in orthodontic and research journals, chapters in 3 orthodontic textbooks, 2 guest audio presentations for Practical Reviews in Orthodontics (Oakstone Medical Publishing), 3 CD-ROM lectures for AAO´s Online Learning Program and, was the Guest Editor of the March 2010 issue of the journal Seminars in Orthodontics.
ORTHODONTIC AND ORTHOPEDIC TREATMENT BASED ON BIOLOGIC PRINCIPLES
How to minimize iatrogenic effects from orthodontics.
A - Deproteinization of Tooth Enamel Surfaces to Prevent White Spot Lesions and Bracket Bond Failure: A Revolution in Orthodontic Bonding Orthodontic treatment success is jeopardized by the risk of development of white spot lesions (WSLs) around orthodontic brackets. Unfortunately, the formation of WSLs still remains a common complication during treatment in patients with poor oral hygiene. Nearly 75% of orthodontic patients are reported to develop enamel decalcification because of prolonged plaque retention around brackets. It is the orthodontist’s responsibility to minimize the risk of patients having enamel decalcifications as a consequence of orthodontic treatment. This can be achieved
WORKSHOP
8 AREO / Sibiu 2016
by using hybrid, fluoride-releasing, glass ionomer cement to bond brackets, with deproteinization of the enamel surface prior to phosphoric acid etching. You will learn why: Enamel is protected from white spot lesions when brackets are bonded with hybrid, fluoride-releasing, glass ionomer cement. Enamel de-proteinization with Clorox (5.25% Sodium Hypochlorite), prior to etching, increases bracket shear bond strength (Justus R et al, Seminars in Orthodontics, March 2010). Incidence of bracket bond failure is diminished when the enamel surface is de-proteinized before etching and bonding brackets, both with composite resin and also with glass ionomer cement. You will learn how to: De-proteinize the enamel surface. Bond brackets with hybrid glass ionomer cement. B - Prevention of periodontal deterioration/damage Alterations in the mucogingival complex can occur during orthodontic tooth movement. In terms of changes in the position of the soft tissue margin and in gingival dimensions, the important factors to consider are the direction of the tooth movement and the bucco-lingual thickness of the gingiva. Lingual tooth movement will result in an increased bucco-lingual thickness of the tissue at the facial aspect of the tooth which results in coronal migration of the soft tissue margin (decreased clinical crown height). Facial tooth movement, on the other hand, will result in a reduced bucco-lingual tissue thickness and thereby a reduced height of the free gingival portion and an increased clinical crown height. You will learn why: Incisor proclination may damage the periodontium and jeopardize stability. Arch length increase to alleviate crowding is the least stable orthodontic treatment. You will learn how to: Avoid lower incisor proclination and still achieve ideal alignment. Maintain ideal alignment long-term. You will learn the indications for extraction of: One lower incisor. Four first bicuspids. Two mandibular second bicuspids and two maxillary first bicuspids. C- Prevention of External Apical Root Resorption The issue of orthodontic-induced root resorption has attracted the interest of clinicians/investigators because of the alarming clinical and legal implications associated with its occurrence. External apical root resorption (EARR) is a common iatrogenic consequence of orthodontics. EARR is a small problem for the average orthodontic patient, with mean resorption per tooth per patient of less
WORKSHOP
9 AREO / Sibiu 2016
than 1.5 mm. This magnitude of resorption has no adverse clinical consequences. However, 3 to 5% of orthodontic patients experience 4mm, or more, of EARR. You will learn how to apply the strategies to minimize orthodontically induced EARR: Eruption guidance of maxillary canines, Driftodontics, Early correction of anterior open bite with a spur appliance to establish normal tongue rest posture, Early correction of large overjets associated with Class II malocclusions using skeletal correction (growth modification) to minimize both incisor trauma and EARR. Orthognathic surgery (to avoid moving roots against cortical bone). You will learn why: EARR occurs. Genes are responsible for EARR. Treatment strategies to minimize EARR must be implemented in every orthodontic case. You will learn how to: Detect EARR early in treatment. Improve the eruption path of mesially inclined maxillary permanent canines to prevent incisor root resorptions caused by canines. Alleviate lower incisor crowding through extractions and subsequent driftodontics. Close anterior open-bite malocclusions without brackets by allowing incisors to erupt unhindered by an anterior tongue rest posture. Correct Class II, Div I malocclusions by growth modification instead of moving teeth with the risk of developing EARR. You will learn: What the evidence recommends doing in case of timely detection of EARR.

(4.6.1929 - 05.12.2011)
PhD 1969
Member of the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences
Recipient of:
„Gh. Marinescu” prize of the Romanian Academy (1967) for the monography: „Orthodontic
appliances: principles and methods”
„Toma Ionescu” prize of the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences (1998) for his entire scientific and professional career.
Prof. dr. Gheorghe Boboc graduated from the Faculty of Stomatology, Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy Bucharest in 1954 as highest ranking amongst his class. He started his academic career in 1957 and, only six months after, he was put in charge of organizing and leading the orthodontic section of the Faculty. In this position, he devised and later developed the university curricula both for the theoretical and practical knowledge of orthodontics, curricula which still constitutes the foundation of today’s orthodontic university education.
He covered all the steps of academic hierarchy up to professor and has been in charge of leading the Department of Continuing Education in Dentistry l (1983-1989) and Orthodontics (1989-1999). After his retirement, he continued to act as a consultant professor at the UMF Carol Davila Bucharest, whilst keeping up his private practice.
His didactical activity has been based on teaching orthodontics to students and postgraduates, as well as basic maxillofacial and dentistry knowledge to the students of the Faculties of General Medicine and Pediatrics. Thus, he established the curricula for students, postgraduates, and general dentists seeking continuing education courses. He participated and led numerous examination committees, where he was known for his fair and impartial judgement.
One of his main achievements was the acceptance of orthodontics as a distinct medical specialty in Romania.
In 1994, he initiated and succeeded in establishing the Romanian National

Association of Orthodontics, ANRO, which was a cofounder of the World Federation of Orthodontists. He acted as ANRO’s first President.
His scientific activity generated more than 200 oral presentations and published works. He authored the following books: Orthodontics, course, lithography IMF (1961); Malocclusions, Ed. Medicală (1971); Orthodontic appliances: principles and methods, Ed. Medicală (1974); Craniofacial formation and growth, Ed. Medicală (1979, reedited and supplemented 1996); Treatment of malocclusions, Ed. Medicală (1982); Bonding in orthodontics, as first author, Ed. Facla (1987); Pathology of the stomatognathic system, course, lithography IMF (1987), Pediatric otorinolaringology, as colab., Ed. Medicală (1992).
His main scientific activities were focused in orthodontics, by trying to introduce worldwide therapies into Romania, by devising his own therapies and appliances and by diversifying the existing treatment means. Some of his particular fields of interest were the stepwise therapy of malocclusions, the final equilibration of the orthodontic results, the conservative treatment of adult prognathism, deep bite therapy, complex treatment of cleft patients, diversification of orthodontic appliances, surgical approach and low force use for impacted teeth and so on. He was passionate about photography and has extensively documented the evolution of his patients.
He dedicated all his life’s effort to his patients, his students and his great love: orthodontics.
