KNOW YOUR LIFT
With these few lines, and with the help of some illustrations we want
to draw your attention to the complex reality of your lift.
Our goal is to help you to evaluate the measures needed to modernize
and adapt to local regulations your lift, ensuring it a longer life cycle.
N° Reg 22334RS 819.13 Allegato 9
Compliance and modernization
The initial phase of start-up, which generally can last a few months, in which the failure may be more frequent, both for an early functional defect of some components, and because some adjustments may not have been well carried out at the time of commissioning and at that point they are performed by maintenance operators and covered by warranty.
The operating phase, which can last, depending on the inner quality of the lift, from ten to over twenty years, in which the number of failures is minimal apart from the possible replacement of any components subject to particular wear. Simply preventive maintenance can be enough.
The phase of decay, in which some equipment, despite the sufficient maintenance, have a degradation preventable only in part with ordinary corrective interventions, determining a number and an increasing severity of failures; to restore a regular function of the lift it is necessary to proceed to significant parts replacement.
Given that the life cycle of an elevator is normally much greater than the duration
of the cycle of any other means of transport, breakdowns can be divided
into three periods:

Regulations The lift is a true means of transportation? All we use it ... simply press a button ... and this machine is put into operation.
Well yes! This is how we must consider a lift, a machine that moves as effect of external energy, but without the presence of a driver or a monitoring controller. For this reason and for its complexity the whole operation must meet important requirements for safety and health. The SIA 370 080 in Law “SNEL” in some regions identified 74 cases of risk in older elevators. The Swiss Association of lifts ASA recommends in particular the urgent adjustment to the current state of the art of old elevator systems for the three following hazards: - Lack of doors in the cabin (risk of crushing); - Inaccuracy in the floor stop (risk of falling); - Inadequate emergency system (risk of being trapped in the lift for a
long time).
- Increase the level of safety of the plant to avoid and prevent accidents (see table) preventing unpleasant situations of suffering to passengers;
- Increasing levels of security for the technical staff also protecting them from possible liability cases as a result of an accident under Article 58 CO;
- The modernization of the lift increases the added value of the building.

IMPROVING THE SAFETY FOR EXISTING LIFTS
Possible door opening, with cabin not at floor.
Absence of the device against excessive speed upward of the cabin, for electric cable lifts.
Essential interventions for upgrading the security status of the lift.
Absent or inadequate emergency lighting equipment and 24 hours help call from the lift cabin.
Inadequate stopping accuracy of the elevator car.
Absent or inadequate devices for protection against bumps, cabin or landing automatic doors.
Commands can not be used or may result difficult to understand for people with disabilities.
Cabin ratio between surface and carrying capacity for stretcher lifts does not comply with current regulations for new lifts (SIA 370-001).

Possible door opening, with cabin not at floor.
There is a potential risk of falling into the elevator shaft when the floor doors may open without the presence of the cabin. The situation can occur if the floor doors, whose lockers are opened mechanically only in the presence of the cab, have the automatic reclosing device, spring or weight, no longer working, or for any slipping out of the cabin from the locking area.
Risk description
OKThis risk can be eliminated by installing
a device that ensures the automatic floor doors locking even in the absence
of the cabin.
Absence of the device against excessive speed
upward of the cabin, (for electric cable lifts.)
The old lifts are equipped with a safety device that works only with downward speed exceed: the cabin is only protected against falling. Under certain operating conditions (people in the cabin with load lower than 50% of the capacity of the lift), it may happen that, for a defect, malfunction or failure of a component of the winch, brake, or the traction pulley, the cabin may be pulled upward, at uncontrolled speed, knocking violently against the ceiling of the lift shaft. In such a situation the unfortunate passengers may face serious consequences.
This risk can be eliminated by adopting the device for protection against
excessive speed uphill, required by law SIA 370-001.

Essential interventions for upgrading the
security status of the lift.Apron
Each cab threshold must be fitted with an apron, for the entire width,
extendind 75 cm down.
Shaft protectionsLifts installed in stairwells must have
protections designed to delimit the hoistway with a minimum height from the floor
of not less than 2.5 m.
Clearance heights in the pit and headroom
In all installed lifts the minimum space to retreat to the safety of the maintenance
technician must be guaranteed with fixed stops.
Overrun switchAt the ends of the shaft ( pit and headroom) proper switches, capable of interrupting the
operation and then the movement of the car, must be installed.

Essential interventions for upgrading the security status of the lift.
Hoistway lighting systemThe hoistway shall be provided
with suitable lighting.
STOP switch in the pitA suitable and appropriate switch must
be installed in the shaft pit, enabling the service technician to control and stop the
movement of the car.
Inspection operation on the roofA maintenance panel must be installed
on the roof of the cab allowing the maintenance staff to move safely the lift
excluding all external commands.
Identification of electrical equipmentAll electrical components of the system
shall be marked according to the diagram available in the machine room.

Absent or inadequate emergency lighting
equipment and 24 hours help call from the lift cabin.
Inadequate stopping accuracy of the elevator car.
The person trapped in the lift is not able to request rescue and communicate with the outside as a result of a fault or power failure .In such a situation, the panic factor and emotional stress make the person vulnerable to carry out dangerous actions: try to get rid of its own resources or risking SHEARING or FALL IN the shaft.
The inaccuracy of the stop to the floor creates a step which creates an obstacle with a high risk of falls and accidents. This risk is higher for older people, for the blind, for those who have a real difficulty in movement and for those who use wheelchairs.

This risk can be eliminated by installing an emergency lighting and a bi-directional
remote alarm as required by the SIA 370-28.
This risk can be eliminated by installing a device in electronic regulation for the
control and management of the leveling at floor stop.

Absent or inadequate devices for protection
against bumps, cabin or landing automatic doors.
Commands can not be used or may be difficult to understand
for people with disabilities.
Automatic car and landing doors offer users a high service for both convenience and safety. Often, however, it happens that in the closing phase the passenger is still passing by and not all existing lifts are equipped with devices capable of interrupting the closing of the doors by reopening them; the collision between the door and the passenger is inevitable. The collision causes loss of balance and harm, risk amplified in the presence of children and the elderly.
Normally, on older systems, the car and floor operating panels are almost always placed at heights difficult to access by disabled people and also have serigraphs and difficult to read and without Braille.

This risk can be eliminated by installing an optical barrier device in on the doors of
the cabin which is suitable to reopen the doors before these bump
the transit passenger.
This deficiency can be resolved by installing appropriate control panels,
mounted at the correct height, with Braille, readable screen, clear directions and
warnings optical aids.

Cabin ratio between surface and loading capacity for stretcher lifts does not comply with current regulations for
new lifts (SIA 370-001).Stretcher lifts placed in service before legislation SIA 370-001 have a larger surface area compared to their loading capacity; there is a risk of overloading the system generating a dangerous situation.
Risk description
OKThis risk can be eliminated by installing unlockable controls only by authorized
personnel. For maximum security, it is strongly recommended to install a
weighting device in the cabin load full of optical acoustic signal to block the lift
operation once the load capacity limit is overcome.
