GREETINGS FROM FR . DAVE

Last weekend in my homily I spoke about Holding On. This week my theme is Letting Go.

I have had the opportunity to pray with many people over the years about issues of forgiveness. Lack of forgiveness leads to resentment and bitterness, both of which prevent us living life

fully and experiencing deeply the presence of Jesus in our own hearts. And, the misconceptions about forgiveness abound, making it even harder to enter into the process of forgiveness.

Jesus teaches us to forgive 7 X 70 times. That’s a whopping 490 times which clearly means this is a decision we make and then reaffirm repeatedly. The adage “forgive and forget” is not very realistic but needs to be revised to state “forgive and keep forgiving over and over”.

The other biggie that hinders us from forgiving is thinking that we need to somehow excuse the bad behavior of someone who has hurt us. In no way does forgiveness mean approval of the behavior of the offender. For serious offenses we need to pray for the

desire to forgive. The following words describe that well.

I am not yet ready for the journey I am not yet interested in the path I am at the prayer before the prayer of forgiveness Grant me the will to want to forgive Grant it to me not yet but soon. —Desmond Tutu

May this Advent season motivate us to begin and continue the process of forgiving those who have hurt us along the way. “Life is hard”, and God is eager to assist us in healing the obstacles to living fully.

Congratulations and blessings to Malia Dang, Leon-Dio Dietzel, Ira Doby-Senz, Alice Naffziger, and Kai Steffen, who were baptized on December 2nd!

Last week, funeral services were held for Brian McCarry, Eleanor Kraker, and Stephanie Spalding. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace.

BRETT ’S TWO CENTS

Hello, everyone! I know many of you find lots of consolation in the monthly reflections from the Direction for Our Times ministry. Here is the December message, just in time for Advent. Enjoy! Jesus speaks: My dear apostle, you must remember that we are not separated. Sometimes, in your weariness, you pray and seek understanding of the situations in your life. When you do this, please remember that I am with you. You are not separated from Me when your thoughts seek to provide you with answers. If you remind your self that I am not separate from you, you will search for truth more calmly and with more confidence that there is an answer to your many dilemmas.

Please do not concern yourself if you are distracted in prayer. Use these times of distraction to talk to Me. Tell me what is distracting you and we will talk about it together. We are together, after all, so I am there. If a certain pattern of sin is troubling you, ask Me how I feel about it. Ask for My observations. You, my beloved apostle, are a studier of Me and how I treated others. Because of your desire to know me, you possess familiarity with My heart that others lack. I will give you the answers you seek, both in terms of your spiritual condition and in terms of the holiest way to conduct yourself in each situation you encounter. We are not separated. We are together.

Worries of major proportion would only be problematic for you if you were being asked to assure a holy outcome alone, or if you were being asked to travel through the period without Me. I promise you that I will be with you and that the outcomes occurring around you will be consistent with My will. I cannot promise you that in your humanity you will always rejoice in My will, especially when there is pain. But I can promise you that the greatest amount of mercy will be obtained through your commitment to remaining with Me, united in the life that is yours.

All is well. I am with you. I will be generous to My beloved apostles in this holy time of Advent. Be acutely aware of My presence. When you look at everything around you, look with My eyes. This will give you the understanding that will insure peace for you. All is well. The infant returns through your heart, as the King.

How to celebrate Advent like a Catholic? This is a reminder that Advent is a season of waiting, of preparing our hearts to welcome Jesus at Christmas. This beautiful season is blurred by the secular world of celebrating Christmas before its time. I want to remind you of Dynamic Catholic are offering the Best Advent Ever. These daily reflections help us to reposition our thinking to a more prayerful and hope filled preparation to truly celebrate Christmas. It’s easy to find: simply enter Best Advent Ever into your browser and sign up.

I also invite you to consider joining our group after the 9:30am Mass as we explore the Sunday Advent readings. The church chooses the readings to help us to prepare for Christmas. Join us and explore why the readings have been chosen and what they are inviting us to understand.

Our Sunday Bible Study has begun a series by Dr. Brant Pitre, one of the best young Catholic Bible Scholars of our day, that explains the weekly Sunday readings. We meet from 10:45-12:00pm in the Art Room. Note: We will not meet on December 24th or December 31st due to the holidays.

Our next Wednesday Bible Study is by Jeff Cavins from Ascension Press: Wisdom — Our Vision for Life. We’ll resume our regular 9:00-10:30am meetings in the Fireside room on January 10th, 2018.

Interested in joining one or both bible study groups? Mark your calendars and email Erin!

ACT: Attend a parish reconciliation service with your family and reflect on the Lord’s mercy and forgiveness in your life.

Giving Tree gifts must be returned by this Sunday, December 10th!

Thanks for your help in getting gifts under many trees this year and for your support of utility and gas card assistance. Your help will bring lots of smiles!

This time of year, the weather really starts to change in our area. It’s wet and the temperature starts to drop, sometimes below freezing. Imagine trying to sleep out-side; being wet, hungry and cold. Frankly, there are very few resources in Washington County to address this issue. Last January, the City of Beaverton opened a Severe Weather Shelter making it only the eighth one in the entire County. All eight coordinate their schedules so that at least one of them is open every night, usually starting in November. Most, including the one in Beaverton, are for adults only, no children. But that’s a topic for another column.

Located in Forest Grove (2), Hillsboro (1), Sherwood (1), Tigard (2) and Tualatin (1), these Shelters provide a warm, safe place to sleep and get something to eat. The Beaverton Shelter is operated by Just Compassion of East Washington County and is open on Thursday nights and whenever the nightly temperature drops below freezing. The doors open at 5:30pm.

As with all work of this type, volunteers are critical. There are three areas where help is needed: Greeters/Servers are there from 4:45pm until 7:00pm helping set up bedding and serving meals; Overnight Hosts are there from 6:00pm until 7:00am directing social time, staying overnight, and helping serve a light breakfast in the morning; Morning Help arrives at 4:45am and stays until 7:00am helping serve breakfast, checking out guests, and cleaning up. If you are 18 or over and have compassion for serving the homeless, this might be the ministry for you. For more information or to volunteer you can go to their website beavertonoregon.gov/shelter or contact me. My information is listed above.

If this ministry is not your cup of tea (eggnog?), we can use some help in the Food Closet on either Tuesdays or Fridays between 9:30am and 1:00pm. As long as you wake up with a smile and can be on your feet for a few hours at a time, I would love to talk with you. As always, together we can MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Assisted suicide is now legal in five states (OR, WA, VT, CA, CO) and the District of Columbia. Some polls indicate public support but also show that, when people learn about the dangers of assisted suicide, their

views shift against it. To read the top reasons to oppose assisted suicide, go to usccb.org/toliveeachday.

With the start of Advent, everyone is getting in the Christmas spirit! The bulletin boards outside the classrooms, like the one outside Kindergarten that’s pictured here, reflect not only the fun and excitement of the Christmas holiday but the joy and anticipation for the birth of Jesus. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, our second graders take turns forming a human Advent Wreath to greet everyone as they come in (as seen on this week’s bulletin cover!).

Last Wednesday, December 6th, we celebrated the feast day of St. Nicholas! Second graders sang “The Song of St. Nicholas” for the whole school over the intercom to start the day; then, our pre-K through 5th grade students each left a shoe outside their classroom door to await St. Nicholas’ visit and his gift of candy. It may be cold and windy outside, but inside our school is full of warmth and Advent cheer!
