    WELCOMEHi, Everybody!

Welcome to Knit Lab!If youve been longing to join the fun of

knitting, this is the course for you. Were going to start from zero

and cover the basics, knitting a lacy scarf together as you build

your repertoire of stitches. My goal is to give you a foundation

that will let you go out into the world and knit anything you

    want to knit.

The community features of the Craftsy platform are perfect for

beginners. If youre just testing your knitting wings for the first

time, please ask questions, use video notes to bookmark items

that you want to revisit, and post photos of both your problem

spots and your finished creations. I love to see what everyone is

    working on!

Grab your needles and yarn and lets get started!

YOUR INSTRUCTORStefanie Japel learned to knit from her grandma

when she was eight years old. She grew up wearing

her sweaters and borrowing the ones she made for

other people. Most of these sweaters are raglans, knit

in the round from the top. Stefanie continues this

    sweater making tradition.

A gifted designer, Stefanie has published three knitting

books: Glam Knits, Fitted Knitsand Mom and Me.

Her work has also appeared in a number of books and

publications including Big Girl Knits, Stitch 'n Bitch

Nation, KnitGrrl, Knit Wit, Not Another Teen Knitting

Book, Interweave Knits, Knitscene, Knit.1and VogueKnitting Magazine. She has designed patterns for

Stitch Diva Studios, the yarn companies Southwest

Trading Company, JCA Reynolds, Artful Yarns,

    Tilli Tomas and Mission Falls.

Stefanies teaching is marked by her infectious

enthusiasm and keen eye for detail. Visit her blog for

SESSION OVERVIEWSIntroductionIn this introductory session, instructor Stefanie Japel

discusses the skills, topics and patterns that arecovered in Knit Lab. Stefanie also shows you how

to use the course, highl ighting the features of the

    Craftsy platform.

MaterialsIn this session, Stefanie discusses knitting supplies

that you will use throughout the course. She also

reviews a wide variety of yarn, needles and handy

knitting gadgets. If youve already completed a

knitting project or two, feel free to skip ahead.

Casting OnThis session introduces students to the long tail cast-on

method, knittings most common method of casting

on. Youll use this cast-on to create the Knit Lab course

    project: a Lacy Keyhole Scarf.

Stitches: Knitting & PurlingHere, Stefanie introduces you to the two main stitches

used in knitting: knit and purl. Knitting along on the

Lacy Keyhole Scarf, youll practice the knit and purl

stitches alongside Stefanie in this lesson.

Stitches: Purl RidgesExpanding upon the garter-stitch swatch you made,

this session teaches you how to create purl ridges

with the knit and purl stitches you just learned.

Stitches: LaceIn this session, Stefanie introduces lace, a simple

combination of increases and decreases. This is the

third section of the Lacy Keyhole Scarf.

Stitches: KeyholeStefanie demonstrates how to use increases and

decreases to create keyholes and buttonholes. If

youre knitt ing along with the class project, this

session finishes up the Lacy Keyhole Scarf!

Stitches: Finishing & Weaving EndsIn this session, Stefanie shows you how to weave

in the ends of a finished project for both garter and

    stockinette stitches.

    over wet blocking.

Stitch Library: Seed & Basket WeaveSession ten shows you how to use the basic knit and

purl stitches to create more complex, detailed patterns

including the seed and basket weave stitches.

Stitch Library: IncreasesYoull learn about different increases that will help

you shape your garments. Here, Stefanie demonstratesthe yarn over, make one, knit front and back, and

    paired and lifted increases.

Stitch Library: DecreasesIn this session, Stefanie will show you how to use

decreases to shape your garments, demonstrating

paired decreases and the slip, slip, knit decrease.

Stefanie demonstrates the cable cast-on, knitting-on

    method and backwards loop method.

Next Steps: Garment ShapingDrawing from her garment collection, Stefanie will

explain how you can use the increases and decreases

learned in the course to shape socks, sweaters and shawl

Pattern ReadingAfter this session pattern reading will no longer be a

mystery. Stefanie will explain how to read a basic patter

including charts and common pattern abbreviations.

Bonus Materials: Knitting withAlternative MaterialsThis bonus section will show you how to recycle

trash bags and T-shirts into fun knitting projects.

Stefanie demonstrates how to knit a bath scrubber

    MATERIALS & PATTERNS

Seanie recommends hese supplies or abeginning kniter:

    Knitting bag

Yarn, needles and pattern for your project(s)

    Needle gauge

    Scissors

    Stitch markers

    Darning needles

    Tape measure

Crochet hook (to pick up dropped stitches)

    Helpul/Opional Maerials:

Pen or pencil (to mark pattern)

    Ball winder

    Iron

    Stitch holders

    Maerials:

Double-pointed needles are commonly used for

knitting in the round, on projects like socks,

    sleeves and hats.

Plastic needles are inexpensive but can be

    sticky to the touch.

A needle gauge can be helpful when converting

between needle systems (British to US). Typical

knitting needles range from size 0 to 17.

Make certain all your yarn for one project comes

from the same dye lot. If possible, buy all the yarnyou will need for your whole project at one time.

    Patern Reading:

Read the entire pattern, all the way through,

before you begin. It contains a lot of useful

    and necessary information.

    Casing On and Binding Off:

The long tail cast-on is used 99 percent of the time.

To make binding off easier, and keep your

bind-off edge loose, go up one needle size.

Bind off on the wrong side of the fabric.

Dont forget to remove your stitch markers

    before you bind off.
