When was Jesus born?

The year is not known precisely. When the Christian calendar was

drawn up in the 6th

century, a mistake was made. Jesus was

undoubtedly born around the year 6 B.C., though we do not know

what day of the year. We celebrate the birth of Jesus on December

25 because in the 5th

century the Roman feast of the Unconquered

Sun, celebrated at the time of the winter solstice, was replaced by

the celebration of the birth of Jesus, the Sun of humanity.

Getting to know Saint Peter: He was a faithful follower of Jesus.

At the time of the arrest of Jesus, Peter cut off the ear of a servant

of the high priest with a sword, but then, as Jesus had predicted at

the Last Supper, Peter denied three times that he had ever known

Jesus. Peter then travelled to spread the Gospel and was in Rome

in 63/64 AD during the rule of the Roman Emperor Nero who set

fire to Rome and blamed the Christians for its destruction. Peter

was taken prisoner and crucified with his head downwards because

he did not consider himself worthy to die in the same manner and

posture as his Divine Master.

Gospel Matthew 11:25-30 www.cyberfaith.com

Gospel Reflection

At the beginning of today's gospel, we hear Jesus' hymn of praise

to the Father. He is closer to the Father than anyone has ever

been or ever will be. In fact, he is one with the Father. Jesus is

both God and man. Jesus assures us that he is "gentle and humble

of heart." This gentleness is not weakness, but the strength to

accept us as we are, as well as the strength to help and save us.

Jesus tells us that we are to be like him in this gentleness and

humility. This does not mean being a pushover. It means being

patient with and respectful to others, being a peacemaker, as Jesus

was. It means accepting others as they are and trying to help them

become even better.

Discussion Questions for Gospel

What does being humble mean? (Hint: The word humble comes

from the Latin word humus, meaning "earth." What do we mean

when we say someone is "down to earth"? That is what humility

is! It is the opposite of snobby, and a great compliment. Why?)

How will you be humble today?

How will you be gentle to yourself and others?
