Knights in Action On June 21, several volunteers from Council 6695 assisted Tiffany McCoy at Abuse Alternatives, located on

Memorial Drive in Bristol, Tennessee, with a landscaping project. This project consisted of cutting down and removing holly bushes, removing roots and trunks from previously cut down shrubbery. This hard work by our

Knights allowed Abuse Alternatives a cleaned up area to plant new landscaping. Job well done George Rosen, Gene Rossetti, and PGK Greg Chudzik !

Important Knights News...

The Silver Rose The Silver Rose Program began in 1960 to honor Mary under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. Normally a single rose would leave London, Ontario and make stops for prayer services in ten states before crossing the border at Loredo into Monterrey. Over the years, an expansion to have four roses traveling through a total of 29 Dioceses in eastern, central, and western regions of the United States has taken place. The roses are symbols of the Knights of Columbus' commitment to the pro-life efforts. The Silver Rose will be on display at Saint Anne Church on September 23, 2012. We are so fortunate to have this beautiful piece of history here in Bristol, Virginia once again, so feel free to stop by after Mass and respectfully view The Silver Rose. Please also continue your prayers for the unborn.

People you should know...

Meet Brother Gerard "Jerry" Carriera, oldest member of MSGR James J. Hickie Council 6695

Gerard "Jerry" Carriera was born on November 18, 1919 in Stamford, Connecticut. In October 1941 Jerry enlisted the United States Navy. Jerry received training as a map designer and planner of bombing raids in the Pacific theater. He talks of his role in developing and building incendiary bombs used by Doolittle's Raiders in 1942 on Tokyo and other Japanese cities in retaliation for the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Jerry was serving at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked there. Currently there are only five surviving members of his old unit. During Jerry's colorful military career, he was assigned to Army and Marine units, using his math skills to perform mapping of targets. Jerry got out of the U.S. Navy in December 1945, after World War II had ended, and returned to a position as Chief Manufacturing Engineer for Electrolux. Jerry played a large role in bringing Electrolux to Bristol, Virginia in the 1970's. He continued working for Electrolux until 1990 when he retired. Jerry has been featured in articles in various newspapers and numerous medias for his tremendous work and sacrifices on the World War II Veteran's Committee. His appointment to that Committee came from President George H. W. Bush. When you talk to Jerry, you can't help but notice the rather large Cruxifix around his neck. (seen in right photo) Jerry purchased this Cruxifix in 2008 in New Haven, Connecticut while visiting the Church of Father Michael J. McGivney. Jerry is a 3rd Degree Knight and has transferred his membership to Council 6695. His one ambition is to proceed to the 4th Degree soon. When you see Brother Jerry at his usual front row seat at 8:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, tell him how much you appreciate his service to our country and to the Knights of Columbus.
