GRAND KNIGHT’S COMMENTS – Jeff Fry [email protected]

Despite all of the challenges facing our society and nation, it is a great time to be leaders! While many are lamenting the fate of our nation and are worried about the challenges facing our church, we have an incredible opportunity presented to us locally at Prince of Peace. As we have gradually opened up our church to parishioners during the pandemic, we have no idea when everyone will come back or even if everyone will continue to attend church. As a universal (catholic) church, we can take this opportunity to welcome new folks to our parish. Many in our society feel marginalized, whether it is because of their skin color, religion, sexual orientation or socioeconomic status. Marginalized individuals feel that the majority in society excludes them and considers them to be inferior. While I do not claim to have or know the answers, or even to be an effective leader for that matter, a great challenge is being presented to us. We are all leaders in our own way, and know others who are effective at leading others.

Prince of Peace can be an instrument of change, as well as the Knights of Columbus 14111. We have an opportunity to reach out to the greater community and try to be inclusive, welcoming, and inviting. As we all know, sometimes God closes doors, only to open new ones that can allow more people to be included, to feel safer within their faith communities and greater society. Thank you for being leaders at Prince of Peace; let us in the coming summer months look inward and think of how we can be even better leaders in a somewhat marginalized community.

Welcome Justin Meyer

Justin Meyer was inducted into our council by video exemplification just before the Zoom Business meeting

began. When we finally meet together again be sure to introduce

yourself.

Two Attain Degrees Through New Video Exemplification

Justin Meyer and Anthony Rinaldo experienced the new 3 Degree exemplification in the St. Francis room.

Justin received all 3 Degrees; Br. Rinaldo completed his 2nd and 3rd Degree exemplifications.

Anthony (left) and Justin will remember the night they attended

their exemplification in masks! Also, in attendance were PGK

Ralph Conrad, current GK Jeff Fry, GK (Elect) Mike Breiding, and

FS Bill Forshey. Yes, they were all in masks too!

In our council, only 41% of us are 3rd Degree Knights. With the

new, short, easy to watch, video you can complete all 3 Degrees in

a half an hour. Why not contact Bill Forshey and see how you can

become a full 3rd Degree Knight by viewing the new

exemplification on video? NO Secrets, so if you choose, family

and friends may watch with you to find out about the Knights!

Council Donates to Barberton VFW

The council voted to donate $200 to the Barberton VFW for fire repairs. As you might have seen, the VFW hall

had a pretty substantial fire. Insurance will not pay for all the damage. CHARITy

NOTE: Br. Paul Wagner, DGK (Elect) has challenged all Knights to match his $20 donation to the

VFW to aid in their building’s repair. You can call Paul and he will pick up your donation or you

can send it to FS Bill Forshey. Makes checks out to the council and we will make one check for our

council donation.

POP MASS ON-LINE

Prince of Peace Masses are now on-line. Special thanks to Fr. Bob and Bill Forshey, the

videographer, for putting the Masses online on for us! The link can be found on the parish web page.

COUNCIL DONATES PASTA & CASH TO BACM

A pasta collection for BACM, Barberton Area Community Ministries, was hastily conceived

but masterfully carried out on May 22nd at the church. A 2-lane collection point was set up

under the overhang at the church rear entrance. Seven Knights greeted donors and placed boxes

of spaghetti, rotini, macaroni, and linguini in cartons. The Ladies Auxiliary counted contributions and taped up

the cartons. The collection netted 400 pounds of pasta and $150 in cash donations. Thanks to all who

contributed or helped with this project. See more about the project in the Ladies Auxiliary section below. CHARITy

The collection was to be done in front of the church but due to on and off rain

showers we moved to the rear overhang which proved to be a perfect collection

point. Two lanes made for “no waiting” drop-off.

Diane Breiding (l), Mike’s wife, learned of BACM’s pasta

shortage through her Kiwanis meeting and passed this on to the

council. The hasty collection planning started from there.

At our May meeting the council voted to donate $1000 to

BACM to be made in two increments. After unloading the

pasta donations, GK (Elect) Mike Breiding presented our first

council check for $500 to Dorothy Sucha-Sommerville,

Executive Director, Barberton Area Community Ministries.

Maintaining proper Social Distancing, Mike presents the check

to Dorothy Sucha-Sommerville.

And We Weren’t Through!

GK (Elect) Mike Breiding went back to present the second $500 check in June to Dorothy Sucha-Sommerville.

Mike also presented an additional check for $70 that was collected from individuals.

Charity

ICFR Donation

The council donated $500 to ICFR, the International

Foundation for CDKL5 Research. The council has

donated to the foundation previously through Ron and

Melissa Ralston’s CDKL5 fundraiser “Vivi’s Drive for

the Cure Golf Outing.”

CDKL5 disorder is a rare genetic condition that was first

identified in 2004. It is caused by mutations in the CDKL5

gene, which is found on the X-chromosome. Although

many cases have been identified in boys, because of the

location of the gene, this disorder mainly affects girls.

Ron Ralston accepts our check (with proper social

distancing, of course) CHARITy

Cash Club Sales Off to a Big Start for 2020-21!

Our Cash Club fundraiser kicked off this month for 2020-2021! This program is our primary fundraiser.

As well as providing money for our charity account it provides council operating expense money.

We have been contacting last year’s ticket holders for renewals. Many folks paid for this year’s tickets at the

Pasta Collection (see story). We will have limited ticket sales after Mass due to Covid-19. This crisis has forced

us to cancel many fund-raising programs. Among those cancelled was our Spring Casino bus trip. This was a

major fundraiser for the council which now makes the Cash Club an even more vital fund raiser. We need

volunteers to sell tickets after Masses.

Several of our members, including Fr. Bob, have grown beards during the Covid-19 sequestering. I didn’t like my beard at first. Then it grew on me. Editor.

LADIES AUXILIARY Helping the Knights Help Church & Community

Diane Breiding, wife of newly elected Grand Knight Mike, is a member of Barberton Kiwanis. At a Zoom

meeting featuring the director of BACM, Barberton Area Community Ministries, Diane learned that the

organization was having a hard time obtaining bulk pasta for their program. She shared this with several council

officers and a hasty plan was hatched. This became the Pasta collection project which was featured above.

Five ladies assisted the collection project by counting the pasta packages and

taping the boxes filled by Knights as the cars came through. In all, 14 ladies in

the auxiliary contributed pasta to this project.

Breiding, and Terri Noe.
