We’re looking for callers and folks to help sell pull tabs for Saturday night Bingo. If you haven’t worked Bingo in a while or ever, please think about lending a hand. Just a couple hours a month would help lighten the load for our brother working this event. FYI your wives are welcome to help as well. Call PGK Rich Ostrich or PGK Norm Ouellette for details.

As we are sworn to protect the weak, the homeless and the sick, let us also contin-ue to pray for an end to abortion.

PRAISE

Praise is not a word we often think of as significant or even often used, whether in our lives of prayer or in our lives of relating to other human beings. It may come as a surprise when reflecting on our use of it, what it reveals about our innermost selves: our virtues or the lack thereof, or the depths of our prayer and knowledge of God if we are thinking of it in the spiritual sense.

What does the word “praise” mean to us as individuals. It is not flattery or compliments given to fulfill expectations of another. It is not an exag-gerated kind of appreciation which expects a return. When we receive praise ourselves, we know that it means an experience of greater ac-ceptance of being loved.

Praise as worship and prayer is spontaneous for those who know how to practice it often in daily life. It comes unexpectedly to our lips when we are caught by surprise by the gift of God’s good-ness, when our hearts are shocked into the awareness of God’s attributes: beauty, power, infinity, eternity and above all, love. I may then become aware of His unconditional love. The Blessed Vir-gin Mary echoes this in her Magnificat (My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord ----) is one of the greatest expressions of praise ever written. It is a combination of humility, thanksgiving and wonderment which overwhelmed her to pronounce God’s goodness.

The Psalms in Scripture are God’s own words of praise offered to us for our own praise to Him. The Liturgy of the Eucharist is our daily opportunity to offer the ultimate expression of praise as our Mass gradually builds up to a climax in the singing of the Holy, Holy, Holy.

In our hymns we give God praises; i.e.: “Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow”. Praise

should be ever on our lips to acknowledge the greatness of our Lord and Savior.

Vivat Jesus,

Deacon Terry

Insurance Planning Since its addition to the Order’s product portfolio in

2000, long-term care insurance has provided the or-

der with an excellent opportunity to further serve

Knights and their families. And-since 2005-every

Knights of Columbus long-term care policy comes

with an added value.

That added value is in the form of a service called

“Provider Pathway”, a program offering access to a network of long-term care

providers at discounted rates. The network covers: home health care, personal

emergency response systems, adult day care, assisted living, skilled nursing

facilities and durable medical equipment.

Eligibility for participation in this program is open to Knights of Columbus long-

term care insurance policyholders, their spouses, dependent children, parents

and parents-in-law. All providers are fully credentialed and meet state licensing

requirements.

If you are not currently an LTC policyholder, I suggest that you and I get to-

gether so that I can provide additional information on how you can avail your-

self of this valuable, value-added benefit.

Call me today to schedule your review.

John Mansueto

Brother Knight John Mansueto, father of Lisa Burke and father-in-law of Brother Knight Paul Burke, passed away on April 29th at 11:05pm. John left this life on the tenth anniversary of his wife Irene's passing.

John was born in Alberobello, Italy to Damiano and Elisa Mansueto on April 4, 1931. As a child he endured the hardships of World War II and studied in a Monastery during his middle and high school years. He went to college, majoring in Architecture, but just before his graduation he was drafted into the army, so he instead enlisted with the Italian navy where he studied to become an electrical engineer. In 1956, he was stationed at Long Beach Naval Shipyard for a NATO training mission. It was during this time that he met and fell in love with Irene Contreras. He returned to Italy and their love endured, so Irene and her father went to Italy where John and Irene were wed on April 16, 1958. John joined Ire-ne in U. S. shortly after, where they would build a happy life together. In the 1960’s John worked for Singer Librascope in Research and Development and worked on computers, which were utilized for the Apollo missions. He worked in electrical engineering and was an innovator in creating and improving disc drives for computers and other IT industry changing technologies. John had a passion for food, and loved cooking gourmet meals with Irene. He enjoyed making wine, curing olives, canning tomato sauce, and so many other skills reminiscent of his Italian heritage. He also enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing and photography. John and Irene were active members of the South Bay Italian Club, and later he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a loving, devoted husband to Irene, wonderful father to his children, Lisa, Joe and Mark, and an inspiration to all who knew him.

John is survived by his children, Lisa (Paul) Burke, Joe (Debbie) Mansueto and Mark (Lisa) Mansueto, grandchildren, Robert (Elena), Jonathan (Grace), Matthew (Erika), Vincent, Katie and Olivia, and great grandchildren Ramona, Ada and Margaret, as well as his siblings, Graciella Mansueto, Angelo (Pat) Mansueto, and Mina Cardone, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his be-loved wife, Irene, parents Damiano and Elisa Mansueto, and brother, Onofrio Mansueto. Memorial donations may be made to The John and Irene Mansueto Memorial Fund. Please go to: https://strosesv.com/mansueto for information and donations or mail a check to St Rose of Lima Church, and write “Mansueto Memorial Fund” in the memo. Send to John and Irene Mansueto Memori-al Fund, c/0 St Rose of Lima Church, 1305 Royal Ave., Simi Valley, CA, 93065. Every Knight of Columbus is en-trusted to the care of Mary, the Mother of God. We carry the Ro-sary as the sign of our dedication to her and to her Son. Confident in her motherly love for us all, we entrust the soul of our Brother John to her, so that she may pre-sent him to her Son.

Amen

Chancellor’s Corner

Who do you think you are?

Who do you think you are?” (John 8:53).

What a great question to think about. Notice the question is not “Who are you?” Or “What do you think people think about you?” Or “What do you do for a living?” This is a question of self-reflection, that we should ask our self often.

Jesus replied,“If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. (John 8:54)

I love how Jesus does not even answer the question. His thoughts about himself are not mentioned, as it is not important. Jesus’ answer is all about God’s will and having a spirt driven life.

Often, I try to control my life, thinking, organizing and planning for the fu-ture, and Jesus does all of those things except for the control part. In-stead he has trust that the Lord will lead him to serve and bring the proper attention to the items that matter.

It is hard letting go of control (our will), but if we can listen more carefully, search for God’s message in our lives (His will) and fill our actions full of love it should take us a big step forward on our spiritual journey.

Vivat Jesus, Clark Pentico, Chancellor

Heart Disease and Fat Consumption

Saturated fat doesn’t clog your arteries, despite what the establishment will tell you and despite what most people believe.

Arteries are not like kitchen pipes, which clog if you pour animal fat into them. There is no association between saturated

fats and all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, or heart attack.[i] Since saturated fats are found abundantly in meat

and animal products, and humans have been consuming them for a very long time, and the rise in heart disease is recent

(20th century), it’s hard to see how it could be otherwise.

What does cause clog arteries then?

A high ratio of triglycerides to HDL (“good”) cholesterol is the best predictor of cardiovascular risk.[ii] People with a high

ratio, in the top fourth, have as much as 16 times the risk of those in the lowest fourth. And this ratio is a marker of insulin

resistance. The simple ways to combat insulin resistance are:

• Don’t be overweight

• Exercise daily

• Don’t eat ultra-processed foods with seed oils, refined grains, and sugar.

Insulin resistance is likely the way that cigarette smoking increases heart disease risk.

What about LDL cholesterol – does that clog your arteries?

In older people, over age 60, there’s either a lack of association or an inverse association between LDL cholesterol and all-

cause mortality.[iii] In 92% of the people in the studies reviewed, people with higher LDL cholesterol had lower death rates.

In the rest, no association was found. In 9 studies that looked at cardiovascular mortality, 7 of them found no association

with cardiovascular mortality, and 2 of them found that cardiovascular mortality was highest in the people with the lowest

LDL cholesterol.

The authors of the review write: “Since elderly people with high LDL-C live as long or longer than those with low LDL-C, our

analysis provides reason to question the validity of the cholesterol hypothesis.”

So, neither dietary saturated fat nor LDL cholesterol in the blood clog arteries. Nor are they unhealthy. All of this is the op-

posite of the current paradigm. They still tell you to eat low-fat, and they tell you to take a statin if your LDL is “too high”.

The real culprit, as noted, is insulin resistance, which our modern lifestyle of garbage food and sedentary lifestyle pro-

motes. I’ve received countless messages from people who tell me that their doctor says their LDL is too high. In the case of

heart disease, modern medicine focuses on the wrong things, in my humble opinion. What I’m doing is avoiding garbage

food, maintaining a lean body weight, and exercising regularly. Heart disease runs in my family, though I reject the idea

that genetics has much to do with it. The most powerful preventive measures are diet and exercise.

BINGO WORKERS

We are in need of more pull tab workers and we still need a caller and a

call back person. Training is free and it is not a hard job. For pull tabs you

basically sell lottery tickets to the players. If you are new to the council

please call me so I can get you on the Bingo Schedule. If you can’t work

a specific weekend in June or have a shift preference please email me at

[email protected] . I produce the schedule around the 2nd Wednesday

of the month before. So get me any special requests for June by May

14th. Remember the Chili Cook-off and Car Show is on Sunday, June 9th.

Keep in mind cashiers and pull tab workers now start at 4:00pm.

Also we have a had a lot of knights showing up to help without being scheduled. Though, we do

appreciate it, it leads to staffing problems as the workers that are scheduled are left to wonder

why they are there. For example, one week we had 7 pull tab workers, and the next week 2. It

would help a lot and be much more appreciated if you could work a scheduled shift once a month.

I have post the bingo worker schedule online at www.kc5803.org.
