EDWARD DOUGLASS WHITE COUNCIL 2473 ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA January 2020 Founded May 20, 1923 Number 7

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE The opening days of January may be cold

and nature bleak, but our church still glows

warm with the peace and joy of Christmas. I

hope this Christmastide finds you and your

family joyful and at peace. We dedicate the

New Year to Mary on the January 1st

Solemnity honoring her as Mother of God;

and on January 7, the Solemnity of Epiphany,

we rejoice with her, as her Son is adored by

the three Wise Men. I will now allow the

taking down of Christmas decorations and

putting you tree out for curbside recycling.

EDW welcomes the New Year with our annual New Year’s Eve Party

at the Council Home. We prepare for the March for Life and it is easy

to fall back into the normal, pre- Christmas routines.

How is this year going to be different then the last? Sure it’s a new

decade. But do you want to come upon Christmas next year in a new

place, taking stock of what goals you accomplished in 2020. Like

many, I set New Year’s Resolutions. A few years back I came across

the best way I found to set goals for the upcoming year.

Most people say they want to change. Get Fit. Get a new job. Start a

new hobby. But here’s the thing. Most of us won’t actually do any of

that. Setting goals for yourself is absolutely the right thing to do, but just

having good intentions alone changes nothing. You can make

resolutions all you want—but a resolution without a plan is just wishful

thinking. So, how can you stick with your goals throughout the year?

Make SMART goals.

There are five building blocks that will help you reach your

SMART goals:

Specific

Measurable

Achievable

Relevant

Time-Sensitive

S – Specific

What do you want to achieve? Get down to the nitty-gritty with it. Just

saying you want to lose weight won’t cut it. Instead try, “I’d like to drop

20 pounds and be able to do at least 20 sit-ups in a row without passing

out.” Watch for any roadblocks that could keep you from reaching your

goal, and make a plan to get around them.

Questions to ask yourself: Who does my goal involve? What am

I trying to accomplish here? When and why do I want to make this

goal happen?

M – Measurable

If you know your ultimate goal is to pay off $24,000 of debt in the

next year that means you have to pay $2,000 a month to reach that goal

(or about $460 a week). Break your goal into doable chunks. Give

yourself daily, weekly and monthly steps. Focus on those, accomplish

one, then head on to the next one.

Questions to ask yourself: How long will it take to reach my goal?

How do I know when I’ve reached my goal?

A – Achievable

Is your goal realistic? Do you have the ability to do it? What about

the skills or tools you need to reach it? If not, no shame. Just change

your goal to something you can accomplish. You don’t want easy-to-

reach goals though. Stretch yourself! But don’t chase after something

that will wind up discouraging you in the long run.

Questions to ask yourself: Do I have the resources to achieve my

goals? If the answer is no, what am I missing?

R – Relevant

Does the goal fit with the overall plan you have? If your goal is to

learn the art of origami and you have room for a new hobby, great!

But if you have plenty of hobbies, think about spending that energy

elsewhere. And don’t forget to figure out what your why is. Your why

could be something like, “I want to go on dates with my spouse twice

a month to invest in and strengthen our relationship.” Why you want

to do something is powerful.

Questions to ask yourself: Is the goal within reach? Is it reachable

with the time and resources I have? Why do I want to reach this goal?

T – Time-Sensitive

Set a time limit—because you need a finish line. Take that goal of

yours, create a plan, and break it all the way down to daily activities.

Then, give yourself a deadline. For example, “I’d like to lose 20 pounds

by December 31.” To lose 20 pounds, calculate things like how many

times you need to work out each week and daily calorie intake.

It is recommended you set goals for these seven significant areas of life:

Financial Goals: Start saving for retirement, get out of debt,

or use a monthly zero-based budget.

Spiritual Goals: Pick up a new devotional, start a daily

journal, or plug in to a group at your church.

Fitness Goals: Hit the gym more often, take the stairs, and

remember to eat your veggies.

Educational Goals: Go back to finish your degree, get your

MBA, or read a good book every month.

Family Goals: Plan one-on-one dates with your kids, have a

standing date night with your spouse, or make it a point to

call your mom and dad on Sunday nights.

Career Goals: Work toward a promotion or raise, learn something

new about your line of work, or polish up and send out resumés if

you’re looking for a new career path.

Social Goals: Say yes when someone invites you out to lunch or a

social gathering—or, for some of us, say no more often. Whatever

your goals for 2020, you can do it. Please take some time to give of

yourself this New Year. EDW always has opportunities to serve

your church and community. In December, let’s all look back at all

we have accomplished.

Happy New Year!

FOOD FOR FAMILIES

The goal of Food for Families is to ensure that as few as possible go to

bed hungry each night. The Knights of Columbus are committed to helping

end hunger through the Food for Families program, which has donated

millions of dollars and millions of pounds of food to the cause. Council and

parish families raise funds to support their local food pantries, food banks

and soup kitchens. Though in-kind donation of food is valuable, leaders of

hunger-relief organizations often comment that financial contributions can be

stretched even further and allow nonprofits to procure the exact items needed

by the organization and its clients. Thus fellow Knights, if you are involved

in a program of collecting food for a parish or community food pantry or

involved in the preparation/distribution/service of meals, send a note with the

particulars (name of organization, pounds of food collected, money donated,

person hours donated) to the Financial Secretary so that your

service/donation can be included with the Council’s 2019-2020 report.

Financial Secretary Bill Wester (right) presents the Food for Families plaque to Deputy Grand Knight Jim Saenz at the December Council meeting. During the last Fraternal Year 2018-2019, EDW Council donated $2390 to the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) to assist needy families.

THE DIOCESE OF ARLINGTON

CATHOLIC CHARITIES:

THE ST. LUCY PROJECT OVERVIEW

During a year, EDW members regularly support the

Diocese of Arlington’s Catholic Charities. The mission

of Catholic Charities is to provide service to people in

need, to advocate for justice in social structures, and to

call the entire church and other people of good will to do

the same. This article will be the first in a series that will

give you an overview of the St. Lucy Project, which is

the food portion of Catholic Charities. Their mission is

feeding the hungry, nourishing the soul.

Catholic Charities believe passionately in a future

without hunger. To respond to neighbors in need, the St.

Lucy Project connects food resources with local food

pantries that distribute food directly to neighbors. Almost

a quarter of a million people in the Arlington Diocese are

“food insecure,” meaning they do not know where their

next meal is coming. As a Catholic response to the

hunger and food insecurity in our Diocese, Catholic

Charities conducts a Diocesan-wide outreach to collect

and distribute food where it is most needed through the

St. Lucy Project. Our Knights regularly assist our

parishes to transport the collected food either to the new

Main Warehouse in Manassas or to Christ House in

Alexandria. Did you know that EDW was one of the first

donors to help purchase a huge walk-in refrigerator and

freezer at the Main Warehouse?

On a local level, one Knights of Columbus organiza-

tion created Bread for Our Brothers, where unsellable

bread products from food vendors are collected and taken

to 20 food pantries, shelters, and churches in Northern

Virginia. Bread for Our Brothers collects anywhere from

500 to 1,000 loaves of bread a week.

The St. Lucy Project offers an opportunity to live out

your faith by directly serving the hungry. As Christ said,

"I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least

brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40).

REQUIESCAT IN PACE

John Pfundstein (65) August 13, 1923 – December 11, 2019

A 45-year EDW member, John Pfundstein

died in his sleep on December 11. John was a

third degree member, a former Council officer, a

staunch supporter of the Arlington Food

Assistance Center, and a regular at the

Thanksgiving Day meal distribution. He became

an institution at EDW noted for his ability to

pitch in whenever needed and to offer his

unlimited font of knowledge about events and

people at EDW.

Since 1985, John was employed at Sibley

hospital in the Nutrition Services and

Environmental Services departments. There, as

at EDW, he had a reputation as a team player

who was always willing to assist his coworkers

whether on or off-duty.

His spirit of charity will live on in all of us

and serve as inspiration in our eternal quest to

be the best knights that we can be.
