Hobbies Branch Step 1

Purpose

Step provides a basic knowledge of the wide variety of hobbies

and types of hobbies that exist. Upon completion of this step Trailmen should

understand what a hobby is and become exposed to new hobby ideas they may find

interesting. This step identifies the remaining steps for this branch based upon the

collective interest of the patrol.

1) What is a hobby?

2) What are some different types (categories) of hobbies?

3) What are several examples of hobbies from each category (Indoor, Outdoor,

Collection, Competition, & Observation)?

4) What two (2) hobbies does your patrol wish to explore at future meetings?

5) What one (1) hobby does your patrol wish to explore on a Hit the Trail?

Notes to the Trail Guide

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

1. The goal is not for the boys to be experts at these hobbies, but to gain an

increased exposure, knowledge, and awareness of the different hobbies that

exist.

2. Make it relative to your patrol.

3. Because the Hobbies branch is a bit unique in that it is nearly entirely elective,

you may choose to repeat the same hobbies and build progressively from Fox to

Hawk and from Hawk to Mountain Lion, OR you may decide to choose different

hobbies for each level that best matches their interests.

4. See the Leaders Guide for more information on Steps.

FUN //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Jump the Creek To play, you have to set up the creek. You do this by placing two jump ropes, on the ground, about a foot apart.

Players take turns trying to jump over the creek. If they land on or in the middle of the jump rope-the creekthey're out.

When everyone has jumped once, move the ropes about another foot apart.

The person who is able to jump the farthest without falling into the creek is the winner.

FOCUS

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

List of Hobbies What do you like to do? Have everyone name something they like to do in their free time. Look at a list of hobbies (one is provided in the Helps document). Have the Trailmen point out the ones they have heard of. You may find that somethings you did already are actually hobbies!

Hobby Categories Discuss how having a hobby helps to make you a more interesting person and gives you something to talk about with other. Hobbies help you avoid feeling bored. Learning something new is always good for keeping your mind and body active.

Discuss inside hobbies and outside hobbies. Explain that it is okay to have different hobbies, multiple hobbies and that one should always follow safety rules when participating in any hobby.

Learn a Hobby Today's discussion is about the value of finding an interesting hobby. A hobby is a good way to challenge your mind while you are having fun. You can also connect with others interested in your same hobby, which will build your social and life skills.

Discuss the basics of your chosen hobby. You may also consider presenting a few different options for the Trailmen to choose from. You can conduct an interest survey at a prior meeting, or find several adults to help you divide the Patrol up based on interests the night of your meeting.

FINGERS //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Try a New Hobby Have the Trailmen pick a hobby that they want to explore at this meeting beforehand. Encourage them to choose one that they have not tried before. There is a list of hobbies in the Help document, but you may choose any hobby you like. Provide the necessary materials, or have each boy bring his own materials, depending upon the hobby.

Do your Hobby Give the Trailmen the necessary supplies for their hobbies and allow them time to explore their selected interests. You may consider preparing in advance and asking the Trailmen to bring their own supplies or asking for donations to cut down on Troop spending.

FAITH (TRAIL GUIDE THOUGHTS)

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Prayer of Thanks Lord God, when You created the universe You blessed us with many living things. We thank You for giving us which bring us so much joy to our lives. May our hobbies and interests continue to give us joy and remind us of Your love. Amen.

Thanks God has given us many things to appreciate and enjoy. During the closing prayer, thank God for these things. Thank Him for our different hobbies and interests. Tell Him how much we appreciate our gifts and abilities.

Pray with the Trailmen.

Free Time Read and discuss Philippians 4 :8. Relate this to the importance of giving your mind something pure to occupy itself with. A hobby can be a positive way to engage your mind and occupy your free time.

Notes to the Trail Guide /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I. The goal is not for the boys to be experts at these topics, but to gain an increased

knowledge and awareness of the Objective.

2. Make it relative to your patrol.

3. Because the Hobbies branch is a bit unique in that it is nearly entirely elective, you

may choose to repeat the same hobbies and build progressively from Fox to Hawk

and from Hawk to Mountain Lion, OR you may decide to choose different hobbies for each level that best matches their interests.

4. See the Leaders Guide for more information on Objectives.

Helps

I. What is the history/origin of the hobby?

a. Goal: To learn about some history of model building as a hobby.

b. Lesson: Scale models were used to simulate actual machines and vehicles in

miniature for commercial and industrial purposes prior to becoming popular as a hobby.

C. Examples:

i. Plastic model cars were originally produced for car dealers to use as

sales displays. Extra unassembled kits were then sold to enthusiast

creating a new market for the model kits.

2. What special skills are needed for the hobby?

a. Goal: To learn about various practices of model building and the skills

associated.

b. Lesson: As the modeler gains in skill and experience his models will more closely resemble the actual subject.

C. Examples

i. Assembly & Gluing

ii. Brush Painting

iii. Airbrushing

iv. Decal Application

V. Sail Rigging

3. What equipment is required for the hobby?

a. Goal: To gain exposure to the basic types of model building gear.

b. Lesson: There are certain tools that are used for various types of models.

c. Examples: (focusing on plastic models)

i. Utility precision knife (x-acto knife)

ii. Cutting mat

iii. Good lighting

iv. Assembly/Painting stands

v. Paint Brushes, Airbrush

vi. Assembly Instructions

vii. Sandpaper or file

4. What resources such as time, money, and materials are needed for the hobby?

a. Goal: To understand the costs and materials associated with model building.

b. Lesson: Models vary in size, complexity, completion time, and cost. Beginner

plastic models can be completed for a few dollars in a few hours. Large

complex models could be several thousand dollars and years to complete.

C. Examples:

i. Time - Learning & practicing techniques, waiting for glue or paint on

individual pieces to dry. More pieces, more detail, more time required.

ii. Patience - Taking your time and not rushing through the model or

skipping steps will produce the most realistic best looking model.

iii. Materials Needed:

I. Glue

2. Paint

3. Model Kit

4. Decals

5. Paint Thinner

6. Cleaning Supplies

5. What separates professionals from amateurs in this hobby?

a. Goal: To learn about professional model builders and why they get paid to make

models.

b. Lesson: Professional modelers create small scale examples because models are

cheaper to produce, test, modify, and potentially destroy than the actual

subject.

c. Examples:

i. Promotional Displays

ii. Conceptual Designs

iii. Model aircraft used for aerodynamics testing.

iv. Model boats used to test stability and load capacity.

6. What is the purpose of the hobby??

a. Goal: To understand that people build models as a hobby for different reasons.

b. Lesson: Model building as a hobby can be for relaxation, collection, or

competition.

Purpose

Hobbies are a fun way to learn and express yourself. The purpose is to expose the

Trailmen to real world examples and the people who also participate in these hobbies.

I. Hit the Trail! serves more as an experience than a lesson based event. The Trailmen

should have an experience rather than a class.

2. The goal is for the Trail men to gain an increased knowledge and awareness of the subject.

3. These outings should relate at the Fox, Hawk, or Mountain Lion patrol level.

4. Many 'Hit the Trail!' activities can be rolled into a campout or other special event

5. See the Leaders Guide for more information on Objectives.
