In 2013 we celebrate the seventeenth annual New Zealand Post Childrens BookAwards, recognising the very best in New Zealand books for children and young

adults. This prestigious awards programme is one of the most exciting events on

the literary calendar and you can be sure its going to be another stand-out year.

    A note from the Judges

This summer we three judges have had the

opportunity to revisit our childhoods, through the

work of New Zealands leading writers and illustratorsfor children and young adults. This is the remarkable

thing the very best writers manage to achieve. They

somehow burrow back into the mind of the child:

delighting them with word play, surprising them with

plot twists, and most of all respecting the power of

    their youthful imaginations.

In a way the judges task is an impossible one. While

the very best books here give us a tantalising whiff

of the years gone by, so that for a moment we too

are thrilled by the dragon, shocked by the bully,

cheering for the underdog and smitten by the love

interest, the truth is our own imagination is a poor

substitute for the actual art of being young. And so

we read not just with appreciation, but also with atinge of jealousy; for that wonderful, intense, fiction

fuelled way of living that is the special preserve of

    the young.

Im delighted to be able to report that this year

our writers have provided a tremendous range of

material for the unique talents of young readers.

They have served up stories set in the past and the

future, in our land and far away, stories of action, of

    whimsy and of quiet contemplation.

This sheer variety makes judging especially hard,

and so we have tried to read with an eye for those

special books whose qualities will outlast the current

fads and fashions. In short weve been looking for

books that do that thing that only books can do: theones that speak to our young people about all the

excitement, terror and wonder of being alive, that

    demand engagement, imagination and empathy,

that enrich the lives of those lucky and smart enough

    to have chosen to read.

2013 New Zealand Post Childrens Book Awards

WELCOMEto the 2013 Kiwi Kids Good Book Guide

    A note from our Sponsor

Books play a key role in the development of young

minds opening up new horizons and new worlds of

    possibility.

The role which books play in developing the minds

of our children has never been more important than

it is today, as children grow up in an era when access

to written media has been democratised, and when

anyone can create and publish their own content,

and find an audience for their own stories.

For the past 17 years New Zealand Post has been

proud to support the Childrens Book Awards, which

celebrate the best local writers and illustrators.

The awards celebrate the skills of storytellers who tell

stories with a Kiwi flavour. The continued success

of local authors and illustrators serves as a reminder

to our kids that New Zealand can stand proudalongside much larger nations when it comes to the

quality of the writers and illustrators who so ably

    serve our youngest generation.

And long may that continue to be so.
