    Introduction

  • 8/14/2019 Kit Carson Lodge1

    10/79

Kit Carson Lodge is situated on a high alpine lake surrounded by granitepeaks and tall pines. Located in the California Sierra 45 minutes south of LakeTahoe, Carson Lodge is one of those old destination resorts that they do not

build anymore. Wood, stone, water and spectacular scenery but most of all the

    quiet!

Kit Carson Lodge is probably the opposite of where you are coming from. It

doesn't have the lights; it doesn't have the crowds. It is quiet and it is beautiful.

You can hear yourself think. At night you can hear a pin drop and the sky is so

big, so many stars. Whether you are hiking up to California premier

wildflowers in the sierra, lounging on our beach, out fishing or gliding across

Silver Lake in one of our canoes, dining in our restaurant, browsing in the art

gallery or store, or just sitting on your deck with a great wine looking up atthat incredible sky, Kit Carson Lodge at Silver Lake will definitely be

different from where you are right now and it may be the perfect place for you.

Kit Carson Lodge On silver lake

The lodge was established in 1926. Since then it is providing the best of the

vacations for all the guests. Providing with the best food in the restaurant.

With the great service by the skilled staff. The lodge is now owned by Mr.Bradley R. Pearson. He is running this hill resort since 1986 with the help of

his wife Mrs. Ximena B. Pearson

For over 80 years, Kit Carson Lodge has been providing a superb vacation

experience in the high sierra. Decade after decade the Lodge is timeless,

maintaining its traditional atmosphere in California where change is constant.

Rustic, elegant and a perfect fit in the wilderness - these are the attributes that

we are proudest of. We will often have three or even four generations of one

family at the resort at the same time - a perfect tribute to the role that the lodge

has played in the family traditions for decades.

Born in Madison County, Kentucky near the city of Richmond, Carson wasraised in a rural area nearFranklin, Missouri, where his family moved in 1811when he was about one year old. [1] Carson's father, Lindsey Carson, was afarmer ofScots-Irish descent, who had fought in the Revolutionary WarunderGeneral Wade Hampton. There were a total of 15 Carson children: five byLindsey Carson's first wife, and ten by Kit's mother, Rebecca Robinson. Kitwas the eleventh child in the family.[2] The Carson family settled on a tract ofland owned by the sons ofDaniel Boone, who had purchased the land from theSpanish prior to the Louisiana Purchase. The Boone and Carson families

became good friends, working, socializing, and intermarrying.

Carson was eight years old when his father was killed by a falling tree whileclearing land. Lindsey Carson's death reduced the Carson family to a desperate

poverty, forcing young Kit to drop out of school to work on the family farm,as well as engage in hunting. At age 14, Kit was apprenticed to a saddle maker

(Workman's Saddle shop) in the settlement of Franklin, Missouri. Franklinwas situated at the eastern end of the Santa Fe Trail, which had opened twoyears earlier. Many of the clientele at the saddle shop were trappers andtraders, from whom Kit would hear their stirring tales of the Far West. Carson

is reported to have found work in the saddle shop suffocating: he once stated"the business did not suit me, and I concluded to leave".

At sixteen, Carson secretly signed on with a large merchant caravan heading toSanta Fe; his job was to tend the horses, mules, and oxen. During the winter of1826-1827 he stayed with Matthew Kinkead, a trapper and explorer, in Taos,

New Mexico, then known as the capital of the fur trade in the Southwest.Kinkead had been a friend of Carson's father in Missouri, and he taughtCarson the skills of a trapper. Carson also began learning the necessarylanguages and became fluent in Spanish, Navajo, Apache, Cheyenne,

    Arapaho, Paiute, Shoshone, and Ute.

Hiking and Wildflowers in the Silver Lake / Carson Pass

    Area

This is one of the premier wildflower areas of California and one of the besthiking areas for short, spectacular hikes. Because our base elevations and trailheads are so high in the Carson Pass area, hikes quickly take you up to high lakesin alpine terrain that might take overnight backpack trips elsewhere. A widevariety of terrain is available and many of our guests take different hikes everyday for several weeks without traveling more than 10 miles from the resort to atrailhead. Because many of these hikes are gentle and short, they are particularlyappealing to older guests and families with young children.

Like Mr. and Mrs. Robert Peeks, who have been coming to Silver Lake area formore than 30 years, you will be able to hike and explore the area, taking photos

The Kayaks in lodge are shorter and wider than traditional kayaks, making

them much more stable. Experience the grace and speed of a kayak as you

tour our lake's edge. You sit low in the kayak and feel much closer to the

water. These boats are very agile and fast.

Silver Lake is 1.5-miles long and .75-miles wide and has a shoreline noted for

sheer granite walls, small coves and interesting islands. Whether you enjoy this

scenic lake from our sandy swimming beach or from a canoe, kayak, rowboat or

small motor boat, the lake is a must on everyone's agenda. Bring your swimsuit,

a great book, sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen.

Kit Carson Lodge offers boat rentals. Motor boats, canoes and kayaks may be

rented at the lodge office between 8:30 am and dusk. Pack a lunch and paddle

or motor over to TreasureIslandto enjoy the stillness and natural beauty of thelargest island at the southern side of the lake. Or perhaps enjoy nature's

landscape by boating around the 5 miles of scenic lakeshore. Silver Lake is

stocked routinely to provide a hopeful "fisherperson" opportunity to catch

rainbow and native German Brown trout.
