THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear friends,

We had three major programmes related to women, held in the last three months. In January

it was a public meeting to protest the violence against women. End of

February we celebrated the Women’s International Day. We had women

from Panchayats and Kudumbashree units who spoke on their remarkable

activities. On March 8th we had a major gathering of 107 YWCA members,

from YWCAs South of Kottayam upto Trivandrum for a Leadership Training

Programme.

The March 8th Cluster Meet began with devotion. The message was

given by me. The text is as follows.

‘This morning my short message is based on Christian discipleship,

the cross, and the YWCA. It is based on the gospel according to St.Mathew,

Chap.10: 37-39. “Whoever loves his father or mother more than me, is not fit

to be my disciple. Whoever loves his son or daughter more than me, is not fit

to be my disciple. Whoever does not take up his cross and follow in my

steps, is not fit to be my disciple. Whoever tries to gain his own life will lose it, but whoever loses his life

for my sake will gain it.”

What is Christian discipleship?

Christian discipleship is to walk in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. Jesus spent all his days,

teaching, preaching and healing. He always had time for the sick and the poor. He hardly had time to

eat or rest. He brought physical and spiritual health to all those who came to Him. The YWCA is an

association of Christian believers, who want to reach out to those who need spiritual or physical

upliftment that can come from the resources of the YWCA.

Why is Christian discipleship associated with a cross?

A cross is burdensome and painful. To be a Christian disciple is not an easy task. It can be a

burden and a pain. It requires giving away not only our time and energy, but also our wealth. It may

also cause us to face the hostility and enmity of the world. That is why Christian discipleship is

always associated with a cross.

How is all this connected with the YWCA?

To be a leader in the ‘Y’ is not a matter of wearing a crown. It is actually a matter of carrying a

heavy cross and walking in the footsteps of Christ. For in being a leader, we need to spend a great

deal of our time and energy to carry out our responsibilities with no remuneration. We may also have

to face the barbs of those who are more in the habit of tarnishing than assisting! Yes, it can be the

experience of the cross, but we can have the joy of serving the Lord.’

Molly Benjamin.

MARIAM VERGHESE –

A woman par excellence, unparalleled, unforgettable

Mariam Verghese, known as ‘Kunju’ to all her friends and family was a

woman of caliber. She was a woman of substance. She had brains, charm,

wit, sense of humour, leadership quality and a just and loving nature. Even in

the midst of her busy life she was a fun- loving person who enjoyed life

without complaints.

She was involved in the activities of many organizations but till the

end she loved YWCA most. She started her life in Kottayam YWCA as a

member and later served successfully in different capacities in the home

town YWCA. She served as a board member, led several committees at

different times and gave monumental service as President of YWCA. She

was one of the pioneers in starting the Thanal project of YWCA. She was

ever so eager to serve YWCA with her time and money.

She was one of the busiest persons I have known with her family and social life. But she

always found time for YWCA in her busy schedule. From the local YWCA she moved to the national

level. There also she showed her mettle and held all important positions in the YWCA movement of

the nation. From 1998 to 2002 she was VP of the South West Region. She was elected as the

National Nominating Committee Chairperson for 2010-2014. Before she could

finish her stint she was called to the final resting place where we all have to

go one day. Sad she went so early.

Though we might call it an untimely demise, what is timely and untimely

is decided by God almighty. We go when we are called. Kunju meticulously

fulfilled all that was asked from her. She was a loving daughter, a good wife,

a good daughter-in-law, a caring mother, a mother-in-law, a grand mother, a

sister and a beloved Kochamma for the workers of the Midas empire.

We, the members of the YWCA of Kottayam share in the loss and

sorrow of her demise with the sorrowing members of her family. Though she

has gone from the world, she is still in the hearts of many.

The YWCA of Kottayam organised a public meeting on the 30th of January 2013, to protest the

violence against women. The General Secretary Mini Binoy and the Thanal Secretary Kochurani

Abraham, did a lot of spade work to organise this meeting.

Six speakers from different walks of life were invited to speak on the various aspects of

tackling this social menace.

Dr.Pramila Devi, member of the Women’s Commission said among other things, that it was

time to begin a second Gandhian non-violent struggle by women, to fight the violence against them.

Mr.V.Ajith Dy.SP. from the police department said that police reforms and police sensitisation

towards women were set in motion and were gaining momentum.

Advocate Sindhu Gopalakrishnan proudly said that Kerala was the first state to set up a special

bench to handle only cases for women.

Dr.Varghese Punnoose, a Psychiatrist, analysed the mind of a rapist. He said that man was

basically an animal (Homo- sapien) and some exhibited such bestial behaviour when they feel insecure

by their own inferiority complexes. He also warned women, that showing off their bodies in vulgar or

exhibitive ways can provoke men with less self-control. As for older men raping children it is nothing

other than a mental disorder.

Cincy Jovani, a Municipal Councillor said that the use of liquor and drugs among the poorer

classes in society make them anti-social and women become easy targets.

Mini Job, a teacher, said that teachers and parents sometimes tend to give more love and

kindness to girls than boys. The boys should also be made to feel loved, so that they don’t develop

anti-women feelings in them.

The meeting was well attended and was greatly appreciated. The PASI members Dhanya

Gopinath introduced the speakers and Salila Nair said the vote of thanks.

In conclusion, we believe, that it is now generally understood that the mind set of young boys

towards girls should change through guided education – that the use of mobile phones should be

restricted recognising the dangers of ‘missed calls’ and friendly chats from strangers – that social

activists should step up their efforts to curb the use of alcohol and drugs – and that the negative

influence of the daily viewing of TV serials, depicting men as taunting and aggressive towards women

should be recognised. It is now suggested that young girls should also be trained in one of the

martial arts, to resist a male offender physically.

We, the Kottayam YWCA, hosted the Leadership Training Programme

for the clusters of Trivandrum, Tiruvalla and Kottayam of the South West

region on the 8th of March 2013. The registration began at 8 a.m. After

breakfast, the programme began at 9 a.m. with the hymn “Nearer my God

to thee”. The devotional message was given by Mrs.Molly Benjamin,

President, Kottayam YWCA. A special collective rememberance reading

was read out in honour of our beloved Mrs.Mariam Varghese, who tragically

passed away recently.

Mrs.Prabha Joshua (National Board Member) welcomed the guests

and members. Mrs.Geetha Markose (Vice-President, South West region)

introduced the Chief Guests, Dr.Mohan Raj and Dr.Shakuntala David. The

meeting was attended by 107 delegates from the YWCA’s in the South

West region.

In the morning session, Dr.Mohan Raj evaluated the Action plan of the YWCA for the years

2014-18.

1. The YWCA can do more for the betterment of working women and students under its

shelter.

a) We can help working women save their earnings instead of giving it away to exploitative

relatives.

b) We can give them guidance in choosing life partners.

2. The YWCA can do more in the prevention of violence against women.

a) Counselling can be an effective intervention.

b) Providing a short stay for distressed women like the Thanal.

c) Residential care for women with psychological problems.

3. The YWCA can organize some courses for imparting skills to women so that they become

employable.

4. The YWCA can train domestic workers or give a 3 months course in nursing.

Before lunch, Mrs.Vimla Abraham (Chairperson, National Nominating Committee) read out

the report and follow-up of the workshop at Sonipat. After lunch at 2 p.m. Dr.Shakuntala David took

over the “Leadership strengthening” session. She began in a lighter vein by inviting the members to

dance to music to celebrate the women’s International Day which was on the same day. She then

elicited answers from members to the various questions she asked.

She wanted to know what the members expected from the YWCA. Various answers were

received. She asked how conflicts could be resolved. She emphasized that there was a need for a

vision. Vision is an informed bridge for a better tomorrow. Dr.Shakuntala’s talk was interesting, vibrant

and inspirational.

After tea, the meeting ended at 5 p.m. Those who participated, commended the execution of

the various arrangements of the get-together.

A LA LA LA LA Lenten Tenten Tenten Tenten Tenten Talkalkalkalkalk

Lent is the season of fasting and self denial observed by many

Christians in the days preceding Easter Sunday each year. Christians from

a variety of traditions see it as a time of prayer, repentance and self sacrifice

for the purpose of focusing their attention on Christ.

In the YWCA, we observed the lent ‘Retreat’ on 13-03-2013. The Lenten

talk was delivered by Rev.Abraham Skariah, of TMA Centre, Arpookara. Achen

gave an inspiring talk. He talked from the Book of Ephesians which is said to be

the “Queen of Letters”. The Bible portion for the day was Ephesians 2nd chapter

verses 1 to 10. Achen gave special emphasis to the 8th verse. He talked about

God’s grace to us. It is by God’s grace that we are saved. It is God’s gift, not a reward for work done.

He also asked us to feel compassion for the poor & the hungry and help those in need. We should be

good stewards of Christ.

During Lent season it is a common practice to meditate on the cross, its mystic meanings and

its message to mankind. This time, shall we focus on the Amazing Grace that made it possible for

God to let His Son die on the cross. As such we should observe the lent in the true spirit – with the

spirit of repentance. Our observance of lent, sacrificial giving, repetition of prayers and all such

rituals, turn meaningless as long as we fail to digest the forgiveness and grace procured at the cross

and practice them in our daily life.

INTER COLLEGIATE DEBATE

An Inter Collegiate Debate was held at 3.30pm on the 23rd of January

2013 at the Kottayam YWCA.

There were 8 participants in all. Two students represented each of

the following colleges:-

1) St. Gitts College

2) B.C.M.College

3) C.M.S. College

4) School of Legal Thought

The topic for the debate was ‘Nuclear Energy is indispensable for

India’ and the participants were to speak for and against it.

The chief guest for the programme was Mrs. Miriam Mammen Mathew. She is the chief

Operating Officer of the Malayala Manorama Online.

Mrs. Molly Benjamin , the President YWCA Kottayam, welcomed the gathering and introduced

the chief guest.

The General Secretary, Mrs. Mini Binoy was the master of ceremonies and called out the

chest numbers of the participants one by one.

Some of the students spoke about the beneficial aspects of nuclear energy in order to

emphasise that it is indispensable for India.

The students who spoke against nuclear energy also tried their best to counter the arguments

of those who stood for nuclear energy.

Next it was the turn of the chief guest to address the audience. Mrs. Miriam, herself a

representative of Young India, began by saying that she considered it a great honour to be at the

YWCA, as the two women whom she admired the most(her mother-in-law Mrs.Prema Mammen &

mother Mrs. Ammu Paul) were members of the Y.

The young lady spoke about the salient features of nuclear energy and said that India may

not be in a position to ignore nuclear energy for long as it was definitely the energy of the future.

In the meantime the judges of the debate, Mrs. Salila Rajagopal, Mrs.Ratnam Kurien and

Mrs. Dhanya Gopinath had prepared their list of winners.

The First Prize went to Rahul H.I. from C.M.S College, the Second Prize to Nithya Prasad

and the Third Prize to Jisha John.

Mrs. Thankam Abraham gave the vote of thanks.

TOWARDS A NEW DAWN FOR WOMEN

That March 8th is celebrated the world over as International Women’s

Day only goes to show what a man’s world we live in – where one day is

earmarked for women and the remaining 364 days belong to men! Although

International Women’s Day is a recognition of women’s needs and

capabilities, it has little meaning unless women are given due recognition

and justice throughout the year.Even the U.N. has reluctantly admitted that

“nowhere in the world can women claim to have all the same rights and

opportunities as men”.

As the Dec 2012 gang-rape of a young woman in Delhi shows, women

become victims of violent sexual assault besides harassment on the streets

on a daily basis. They also endure harassment in their own homes, where

brides are burnt for money and in offices, where work harassment is a grim reality too.

It is not just a few individuals who subject women to injustice; it is the entire society, especially

where women are victims of social taboos. The “khaap panchayats” and the moral police have

become a menace and lead to the deprivation of the life and liberty of women. There is also the issue

of why women should be subjected to a dress code, as dictated by these kangaroo courts. In such

instances society often ends up punishing the victims instead of standing in solidarity with them.

One of the most shameful realities in India is the state-organised liquor business, which does

much to fuel violence against women. The rationale that liquor revenues raise valuable money to

invest in social welfare programmes is akin to dealing with “blood money” earned by causing immense

family miseries and tragedies.

The exploitation of women shown through “item numbers” in movies and family dramas in

T.V.serials create the impression on young minds that women are just sexual objects. The graphic

sexual imagery in popular songs like those of Yo Yo Honey Singh and video games like “Gang-rape”

titillate youngsters, who come to believe that women are only meant to be used and abused by

men.Having heard the songs and played these games, they have no qualms about executing them

in real life too.

What is the solution? The Govt, in its new budget, has decided to set up a Bank exclusively for

women and has also set up a Rs.1000 crore Nirbhaya Fund for the protection of women. But these

will remain mere tokenisms unless an entirely new programme aimed at changing attitudes and

mindsets, social perspectives and institutional cultures is designed at the mass level and rolled out

from primary schools through colleges to work-places. Parents also should raise sons in a way in

which, they are indoctrinated from childhood to treat women with respect and encouraged to advocate

women’s equality rights. Women themselves should awake, arise and organise themselves into an

invincible force and carry on a powerful campaign until their goal is reached. A large group of citizens

who come together with one objective is a powerful force that cannot be ignored. Changing the way

Indian society treats women is the only safeguard for preventing violence and injustice towards

women. If Nirbhaya’s case galvanises the world’s largest democracy to slowly correct its attitude

towards women, then perhaps her death has not been in vain.
