CLUB DEPORTIVO BOARD OF DIRECTORS OFFICERS Anne DeFrance, President Ron Leetch, 1st Vice President Laurel Hakim, 2nd Vice President Maggie Becker, Secretary Joan Fairweather, Treasurer

DIRECTORS John Nicola, Construction & Maintenance Bill Chisholm, Outdoor Activities Sandra Johnston, Indoor Activities Marla Anderson, Library & Communications Paul Stanley, Bar Manager Rick Hussey, Meals Director

The three committees under my supervision are doing a great job!

1) Humanitarian They made a difficult decision about this year’s awardee, as many were nominated for the annual award And that’s because there are so many doing so much for our Kino community! Thanks to the Humanitarian Committee and to all those who give, whether or not they receive an award!

2) Charitable Giving This awesome committee receives requests, processed by Betty in the Club office, and makes the necessary decisions about how to disperse funds made available for assisting Kino residents.

3) Fund Raising What a great special event on Wednesday, February 13 — the Fashion Show! Wow! And another fund raising activity is coming up. Stay tuned.

A review of how our fund raising and charitable giving works: • Ten percent of member dues goes to meet the Club’s mandated charitable service to the community, addressing special needs. • Money raised through special fund raising activities contribute to the natural disaster reserve fund maintained by the Club, to over 20 Kino important service programs annually, and to the Club’s own general fund.

Thanks to committee chairs Gloria Brandt, Fund Raising, and Shauna Smith, Charitable Giving, and their respective committee members; and to the ad hoc folks on the Humanitarian committee.

The second motion will be to discuss reducing our breakfast pricing to perhaps bring more members in for our Sunday

meals. If any of you have thoughts or ideas about these motions, please feel free to discuss them with me and/or come to our next board meeting.

February’s Meals February is a short month yet we seemed to pack in two dinners, two breakfasts, and a monster fashion show. A BIG THANK YOU to our organizers and sponsors this month including… Sunday Feb 3 Eggs Benedict Breakfast organized by Anne and Daryle DeFrance, and sponsored by Diane and Les Keute, and Don Basile serving 62 members. Saturday, Feb 9 Canadian Lasagna organized by Sheila and Tavi Kristjen, and sponsored by Barb and Les Pope, and Lynette and Barry Bennington serving 138 members a great and hearty dinner. Following dinner we were entertained with Mexican classic mariachi music by Chayo and Tomas. Wednesday Feb 13 Fashion Show Gourmet Lunch Sunday Feb 17 Canadian Prairie Breakfast organized by Judy and Bill Campbell and sponsored by Maggie and Harold Becker and Jill Edwards serving 86 members. Saturday Feb 22 Rib Dinner organized by Judy & Rick Hussey and sponsored by Eleanor & Bill Falkenthal, Duke Aiken & Glenda Maude, Doddie & Harvey White, and Char Webb & Melva Shaw packed the house with a sell out at 208 members. After the dinner we enjoyed the first ever Kino Country Music Awards organized and directed by Rosie Geier and her masterful soundman Butch. Continued on page 5

Our Club Kitchen in February was a pretty busy place producing some wonderful meals and excellent memories. Coming onto the board this month, I look forward to meeting all of you and working with many of you to keep our meals top notch and our meal times together something no member would want to miss. As I come up to speed on this new job, I am extremely grateful for our experienced organizers and their crews who volunteer often and seamlessly make all of our club meals happen. Lastly for this month, I’d also like to thank Pat, Sandie, and Terri who leave us a well-stocked and organized kitchen and a full slate of meals, organizers, and sponsors for the remainder of the 2018-19 season. Looking forward to the next couple of years, I have two great members I count on for much of the advance work involved in our meals. I thank Bill Berg for staying with us preparing the creative meals posters and coordinating our meals promotions. Judy Hazen has taken on responsibility for recruiting the organizers and sponsors for our meals for our upcoming seasons. This is a huge part of our kitchen operation and next season we hope to add a couple dinners and breakfast which makes this job a bit more challenging. She has been so generous with her time and volunteering to help, I am sure all of you will want to make her job easier by signing up quickly to organize or sponsor a meal or two (or three??). New Business for the kitchen, at the upcoming board meeting we will have two motions on the agenda. I am asking the board to consider a ‘season pass’ for meals where members could pay once at the start of the season for our entire slate of breakfasts and dinners at a reduced price. I feel this would be very convenient for our members and it takes some of the guess work out of our meals planning.

When I last expounded upon the noteworthy happenings in the wonderful world of ODD Bill, I forespoke about the possibility that I may have more information to share about the support staff (can we call individuals support staff if they are volunteers?) for the Bocce Tournament (Jan. 14th to 25th). Well the deities of information have shone upon me and I am privileged to tell you that Nancy & Ron Leetch were assisted by: - Referees: Ron Leetch, Rick Hussey, Tavi

Kristjan, Richard Lee Tucker & Bill Stern. - Scorekeepers: Melva Shaw, Judy Campbell,

Judy Hussey, Judy Hazen, Karen Webster, Veda Tucker, Joanne White, Thelma Primeau and Nancy Leetch.

- Daily Opening Ceremony Hosts Bill Tucker, John Hazen & Judy Hussey.

As you will note, there was a profusion of personnel to synchronize over a protracted schedule of 10 days and all of this was handled masterfully by Ron and Nancy Leetch. My hat is off to them and many thanks.

The 2nd Goathead of the year was held Jan. 31st with 40 players. Organizing crew was: - Bill Stern (jack of all trades and avid poker

player (well he takes my money all the time). - Jerry Menefee on sign-up and supplier of the

essential beverage bus. - Pizza and black bean soup by Christina. - Bonnie Welp and Veda Tucker on the closest to

the pin hole (it is still my goal to be measured once).

- And the mobile libation dispensers – Melva Shaw and Carolyn Martine.

Outdoor Activities

Drum Roll ++++++++ the winners were: - Closest to the hole women – Gayle Lenihan - Closest to the hole men – Wayne Lumbattis - 3rd – Bill Chisholm, Gary Jones, Mike Webster

& Marla Anderson - 2nd – Robert Burnam, Steve Wilmot, Judy Hazen

& Jeff Cobb. - Winners – John Carlen Jennine LaFontaine,

Nancy Leetch & Joe Welp.

Following swiftly on the heels of the bocce tournament (an unfortunate repercussion of the calendar and the multitude of events available to Kinoites) came the Putt Putt Tournament on February 5th to 7th. By a regrettable turn of events Ron & Nancy Leetch were the hosts of this event as well. The regrettable event referred to is the fact they won the tournament the previous year. To a lessor couple this may have proven overwhelming but Nancy & Ron took it in stride and managed an impeccable tournament. My hat and everything else I am allowed to doff is off to the two of you. The two Leetch’s were also able to accommodate players who had other commitment by playing games in “off” times. The winners were:

- Women’s most holes in one (8) – tied between Rosie Geier & Alicia Vivanco

- Men’s most holes in one (8) – Robert Burnam - 4th place – Nancy & Ron Leetch - 3rd place – Gayle Lenihan & Norma Veazy - 2nd place – Butch & Rosie Geier - 1st place – Darlene & Jim Lyons.

—————————- The 3rd Goathead of the year was held Feb. 21st (post Super Snow Moon) with 40 players. Organizing crew was: - Man who can and often does everything – my

brother from another mother Bill Stern. - Jerry Menefee on sign-up and team selector. - Char Webb provider of the booze buggy. Continued on page 5

We've had a great February with the fun Senior Prom. The rib dinner is coming shortly, and the ever popular accompanying skit by Rosie. Our line dance classes have increased in attendance. We're introducing a new class on 'Keeping your Balance' with exercises for 30 minutes after Yoga on Tuesday mornings in March. This is so important to prevent falls. I hope you'll participate. Ann Dichov gave a talk on neurology, and in the Fall season will start off her talks with one on CBD oil from Hemp. The staff has had warm praise for their help decorating and have offered suggestions for themes for social nights. I need organizers for those themes! If you’d like to help, please contact me. —Sandra Johnston, Indoor Activities Director

Drop in pickleball has shifted to 9:30 AM three days a week. Participation has increased with the return of some avid ballers(can I say that).

The shooting range is still available for use by members (sans sign) and the bocce and Putt Putt leagues continue.

There are still some Club Deportivo Kino T-shirts available and the hats are not far behind.

All the material for horseshoe pits is now in the back fenced area waiting for someone with a strong back to dig the pits. Soon – I promise.

Four tournaments in a month and a half (not including the KBDGC tournaments (2) and all the other Club Deportivo activities) – I’m tired – how about you? I think I’ll have to retire again. Le veré en los juegos,

KINO LADIES KLUB Scholarship Program

This amazing program is currently paying for 30 high school students in Kino Viejo. We are now accepting donations for the next school year. The current cost to support one student for one semester will be $100.00 US and $200.00 US for one school year. The price for each student for one semester has increased to 1900 pesos. If you are interested in paying for a specific student, we will find an exceptional student for you or you can get the name of a student to us that you want to support. All students must fill out an application and be accepted by the committee by meeting two requirements. One being a GPA of 80 or better and the second, be willing to donate 3 hours each week at one of the two elementary schools. Once a student is accepted into the program they will continue until graduation or until they fail to meet one or both of the requirements. If you would like more information, there is a small information pamphlet on the KLK Bulletin Board at Club Deportivo. This program is run completely on donations, we hope to be able to add new students to this program and that number will be determined by the amount of donations received. We look forward to hearing from you. Any questions can be answered by any of the following committee members.

Reporting Period:  January 25 to February 23, 2019

Note: Missing dates normally mean that the wind contributed to boats not going out to fish.  I have a NEW email if you can send me any fishing news or pictures: [email protected]  If you can send reports by the 24th of the month, they have a better chance of being added in for the next report. "Slow fishing days with few reports although some have

gone out. Either really too slow to report or keeping “secrets” ha ha. In general, mostly bottom fishing occurring with any success." Ditto February!

01/29  HANNAH RYAN went to Turner/Dead Man area for goldies and rockies in deep water. PERRYDIZE fished Isla San Esteban for assorted bottom fish and 4-5 nice sheephead/perico. TZIGINE fished the Turner area for more bottom fish. FISH FINDER went to 14 Mile to try bottom fishing but I couldn’t confirm how they did. Almost no yellowtail reported even in rumors. ROSIE boat went to San Pedro Matir for two sand sharks, two brownies/sardinera, five baquetas and lots of goldies.

02/01  SAND DOLLAR fished the Turner area for bottom fish plus two yellowtail of 30 and 32 pounds, but no others. They were caught on X-Rap 30 spotted minnows near the reef. NIGHTWINGS fished Turner, Dead Man, and Punto Risco Colorado finding only rockies and goldies  at the reef plus one pinto bass/pinta of 9.5 pounds and a 21 pound Baja grouper at Dead Man, all by jigging. The larger ones were caught right after high tide during a solunar table high. Also lots of triggerfish/cochis around, some of nice size. Ceviche is back on the menu!

02/02. HILLBILLY YACHT went north to Queens Rock for five yellowtail and one brownie. 02/04  PERRYDIZE trolled at Turner but only caught one yellowtail. (Did I mention that IT weighed 37 pounds?) It was caught by the same fisher person, Bud  Dawson, who caught the other 30 pounders, with the same lure! There have not been many 30+ yellowtail caught around here or in the Sea of Cortez in general. Very impressive catch indeed. San Carlos is jealous. SAND DOLLAR couldn’t find any yellowtail, but did get some nice bottom fish and had to travel to near Eagle’s Nest to find quality.

FISHING REPORT Continued from page 7

02/09  GATOR BAIT fished Turner and Dead Man for limits of rockies and goldies and did find one flurry of action just at high tide trolling for 8 nice-sized yellowtail with a triple hook up to start it off. Those were caught at the south reef, mainly on spotted minnow, silver and white ghost X-Raps. 02/10  GATOR BAIT returned to Turner but all efforts failed as it was truly dead that day. HILLBILLY YACHT went to Pedro Matir in 60 degree water for 10 brownies, two yellowtail and a few goldies. 02/14. SAND DOLLAR and JAYHAWKER fished in rough seas at Turner for rockies and goldies.  02/20. ROSIE boat traveled to Esteban for two yellowtail with water temperatures of 58 at the north end and 54 at the south. There was some fish action on the north side but not biting. ——————————————— Due to the brevity of this report, I thought I would add some information I found on one of my favorite species, the pinto bass/spotted cabrilla/pinta. I believe that it is one of the best eating fish anywhere. It is similar to the “brownie"/sardinera and the saw tail grouper and is distinctively slimy or “barbarossa”, as Jesus at KBRV described it. I prefer it sautéed in a little oil with light breading, or grilled skin-on. Its scientific name is Epinephelus analogus  and it is a member of the bass-grouper family. There is little information on it beyond scientific reports but it is a very important fish as a sporting and commercial species, although it is not caught as frequently as other species. In fact, until this season we had only caught two or three, but this year I have seen or heard of about a dozen caught around Isla Turner and Dead Man. As you can see in the last photo at the end, they have tan to whitish color with red brown spots up to 2cm wide and dark brown bars on the upper half of the sides. They grow to 87cm (34inches) and reach weights up to 45 pounds. I have personally only seen them to 26 pounds (one at Queen’s Rock by Judy Kidd many years ago) and most this year have average around 12 pounds. Their natural range is from the northwest coast of Mexico down to the Revillagigedos Islands and even Galapagos. They are usually caught over reef areas associated with s oft bottoms near edges, occasionally near estuaries at depths to 103m. They are definitely bottom fish, feeding upon small fish, squid and cuttlefish, and crustaceans. Thus jigging with or without bait is a good bet.
