We are also excited to tell you about our newest conservaon easement, donated by Mike Miller and Susan Goode in June 2016 on 14+ acres of property in the Town of Cliſton. The property is located within one of the KRLT’s priority conservaon areas and borders the Kinnickinnic State Park and nearly 2,000 acres of KRLT protected properes. The easement includes the original farmstead of the Miller-Goode farm and will protect the property, including significant drainage, scenic views and wooded blufflands in the lower Kinni canyon, from further subdivision and development. From watershed management to individual land protecon, we greatly appreciate our members, volunteers, supporters and partners. During our Fiscal Year 2016, the Kinnickinnic River Land Trust (KRLT) worked with many of our longstanding conservation partners to revisit the past and look to the future of the Kinnickinnic River watershed. In early 2016, the KRLT convened a group of our active watershed partners to develop an integrated pair of planning projects for the Kinni watershed that were published in June. The watershed planning efforts created a new Kinni Watershed Partnership and reinforced new and existing conservation initiatives for the Kinni. We were also pleased to accept the donation of our 34th conservation easement to continue our own ongoing watershed protection efforts. Pierce and St. Croix Counties and the City of River Falls worked with us to develop a Community Report on the Kinnickinnic River Watershed Project that provides a final report of the priority watershed project that was implemented throughout the Kinni watershed from 1999-2010. During this time period, more than $1.8 million was invested through the two counties and the City in substantial rural and urban best management practices to improve water quality; however, trends in the agricultural commodity markets at the same time led to offsetting withdrawals from other agricultural conservation programs and reductions in permanent land cover. The project also provided valuable insight into the need for tracking and maintaining best management practices to ensure long-term benefits from such a major public investment. Building upon the work and knowledge from the Community Report, the KRLT and several active watershed partners developed a Kinnickinnic River Watershed Strategic Action Plan to document and guide current and future initiatives for Kinni watershed conservation. The Strategic Action Plan provides a vision, goals, objectives and strategic initiatives for our collective watershed efforts. This group of active watershed partners also agreed to continue operating as the Kinni Watershed Partnership.

Both projects and reports were partially funded by the McKnight Foundation and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources with consultant services from Harmony Environmental. The plan reports are available from the KRLT office or on our website. In keeping with the idea that plans are best when implemented, related actions were identified to implement the Strategic Action Plan. The UW-River Falls Kinni Consortium of faculty focused on Kinni-based research and teaching offered to host and coordinate the Kinni Watershed Partnership and the implementation of the plan.

Another strategic initiative included in the plan by the City of River Falls is the City’s Kinni Corridor Project. Among a broad evaluation of Kinni issues and opportunities, the project will help the City Council decide the future and fate of the City’s hydroelectric dams and their impoundments. We are also excited to tell you about our newest conservation easement, donated by Mike Miller and Susan Goode in June 2016 on 14+ acres of property in the Town of Clifton. The property is located within one of the KRLT’s priority conservation areas and borders the Kinnickinnic State Park and nearly 2,000 acres of KRLT protected properties. The easement includes the original farmstead of the Miller-Goode farm and will protect the property, including significant drainage, scenic views and wooded blufflands in the lower Kinni canyon, from further subdivision and development. From watershed management to individual land protection, we greatly appreciate our members, volunteers, supporters and partners. Many thanks for your time, effort and financial support that make it possible for us to pursue our vision of a Kinni that is cold, clean and free … forever!
