Dear Parents

Academic and All-Rounder Scholarship Information I am pleased to announce that the Board of Governors have agreed to offer additional Academic and All-Rounder Scholarships for September 2018. Kingswood House has a proud record of working with boys of a broad range of ability and helping them achieve their full potential. We will now offer Academic Scholarships for entry into Year 3 as well as Academic and All-Rounder Scholarships into Years 5, 7 and 9. Academic Scholarships will entail attendance at an assessment morning where candidates will sit papers in English, mathematics, and, where deemed appropriate, Verbal Reasoning, and have an interview with a senior member of staff. All-Rounder Scholarships will be assessed by the submission of a portfolio of evidence in relation to at least one area of excellence from the following disciplines: Sport, Music, Creative Arts, Performing Arts and Citizenship. A short interview and related observation will normally be conducted as a part of the process on an assessment day. The award of a Scholarship or Exhibition into Year 7 or Year 9 will be recorded on the Kingswood House honours board. All recipients of these two awards, across the year groups, will be presented with a KHS Scholarship tie. The Kingswood House Scholarship programme is open to internal and external candidates and is a meritocracy. On Monday the French Onatti theatre visited to perform their short play entitled ‘Le Chateau’ for Years 4, 5 and 6. The actors spoke in both English and French which made it easier to follow the story line and there were opportunities for the boys to practice their French while a few lucky ones were invited to take part in a small part of the show. With a lot of comedy and audience participation, it was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon for both boys and staff. Mrs Carpenter and Madame Swift

Senior Lecture

Mr Dawson came to speak to the Year 9 and 10

boys about his work with the Bloodhound

gang, a team working on creating a car to

break the land speed record of 1000mph. It

was an excellent evening as Mr Dawson gave a

detailed insight into the history of the land

speed record and on the plans for the next

attempt. It was a wonderful opportunity for

the boys to listen to someone speak so

passionately about their interests and we

would like to thank him for giving up his time.

Mr Rudkin

The Onatti Theatre also performed for the older boys from Year 7 including our GCSE French pupils. The senior one, on Tuesday, was completely in French and the boys prepared for the story in a lesson beforehand, read some of the script and answered questions. Their play was called Mes Chers Voisins (My dear neighbours) and looked at the lives of five French teenagers living on the same street. Madame Taylor

Reception class, Year 1 and Year 2, enjoyed a relaxing morning taking part in a yoga class! Johanna led the

children through a story where the children were real transformers!

This week Year 1 and Reception made a

hedgehog out of leaves they found on the

play ground; we also incorporated a maths

task in this activity. They had to count as

many leaves as could find.

On Wednesday, Appletree Nursery visited Reception class for story and cookie time. The children enjoyed looking round our class rooms and playing with our toys and we made some wonderful friends ! Miss Walliss

On Friday 17th November, Year 6 travelled to Battle, to learn about the Battle of Hastings. When we arrived, we had a snack and time on the play apparatus. It was nice to stretch our legs! We then went to the Discovery Centre and there were many interactive displays for the boys to enjoy. There was chain mail to feel, swords to hold and a great video. Next, we had an excellent workshop. Our guide, Eileen, let the boys dress up as various key people involved in the lead up to the Battle of Hastings. All the boys were very enthusiastic and demonstrated their knowledge well. We then went to the battle field and the boys were given shields - some boys used their own ones - and went through how the battle played out. Lastly, we had lunch and visited the shop which the boys thoroughly enjoyed! It was a great day and thank you to all the staff who accompanied us. Miss McSweeney

Year 2 spent the morning making simple circuits in Science. We made buzzers, light bulbs and switches work. Miss Walliss

Year 3 were thrilled to have their Science lesson in

the senior science lab last week!

In order to support their learning on Rocks and

Soils, Mrs Callaghan and the Year 10 boys led a lesson on

how crystals are formed. They showed the boys

different crystals they had already made using table salt,

sugar and copper sulphate. They explained that the crystals

were formed by allowing the water they were dissolved in

to evaporate slowly. The Year 10 boys then demonstrated

how smaller salt crystals can be made by using bunsen

burners to rapidly evaporate water from a salt water

solution. Year 3 were inspired ...! Mrs Dean

Last week's Drama session turned into a Salsa class ! We are busy working on dance routines for the School Production at the 'Adrian Mann' Theatre in February. The show is "Tails of Hamelin", a brand new mu-sical by Piers Chatter Robinson and we have been entrusted with the World Premier. Piers will be visiting us next term to see how we are doing and help us put the finishing touches to the show. Information regarding tickets will be available in January. Mrs Watkins

Sports Summary From Mr Cowie

Last week saw the Middle House Football competition on Wednesday, and again it was fantastic to see all boys in Year 5

& 6 playing and being extremely competitive. The results of the overall house football will be announced at the end of

term assembly, but I can safely say that the two houses in first and second are separated by 1 point!

Year 3 & 4 played Ewell Castle, and had a great afternoon.

The U9As continued their unbeaten run, drawing 2-2, however were the far superior side but just could not finish off

their chances. The U9Bs also played extremely well, winning their game 2-1, with another two goals from Krishan

Idrees. Pick of the players in the Bs were Paul Barrow (MoM) and Devon Cronin for their terrific defensive effort.

The U8As enjoyed a great afternoon against Ewell Castle, winning their game 3-0, 2 goals coming from Adam Gratton,

the eventual man of the match. The U8B team had a good afternoon as well, with a really good performance from Izyan

Siddiqui. The U8C team had a tough game but Euan Mackinnon had a great game in goal in the second half.

Sports Reminder

As of next Monday it is RUGBY SEASON. Therefore all boys from Year 3-10 will require a gumshield up until Christmas.

The options programme will commence after Christmas which will include Hockey, Badminton and Squash.

Please can you ensure that all boys are prepared for their games sessions with their rugby equipment as of Monday.

Surrey Explorers

Surrey Explorers is the local branch of the National Association for Gifted Children. Its mission is to stretch, provide enrichment and to stimulate new interests. Open to all 7 - 13 year olds held at Kingswood House School in the Humanities building. For Sunday meetings, no pre-booking required.

£10 per child on the door £2 discount for PPUK members. No charge for parents. December 3rd : How to Design a Satellite with David Wade. After considering the many applications for which we use satellites, you’ll select a mission and design your own satellite. Along the way you’ll consider the satellite’s payload, what orbit it will operate from and what systems the satellite will need to be able to work in space. This is one thing you do need a rocket scientist to guide you through, and David Wade truly is one. He is a also a Kingswood House parent.

Important Message - Mobile Devices

Dear Parents

A short, but firm request, from teaching and support staff to please ensure that all boys hand their mobile devices into the office at the start of each day.

Parents are also required to have written permission from me if a boy in Years 3 - 8 wishes to bring a mobile device into School, whereupon it must be handed in upon arrival and collected at departure. Please note, however the School does not accept responsibility for their safe keeping.

We will be conducting random checks in the days and weeks ahead and if this procedure is not adhered to, I will have no option but to remove that privilege accordingly, which I do not wish to do. I appreciate your support in this matter. Mr Murphy Headmaster
