Dear Parents

A Preparation for Life beyond the School Gate

Thursday’s Senior School information evening provided a valuable insight about our

move here through to Seniors and a further understanding of how an education at

Kingswood House will prepare our boys for life beyond the school gate, in the volatile

world of the 21st Century, and give them the very best platform to become happy,

confident young men who will make a positive contribution to society.

We have a deeply-rooted philosophy of treating each boy as an individual, of helping

them realise their potential and achieving more than they think is possible. Essentially,

we hold a belief that whilst grades are important, they will not solely define a

Kingswood House boy. Our boys will also be recognisable for their soft skills, natural

leadership and generosity of spirit.

We are proud to offer a genuinely rounded education. One which will inspire the boys

to grow in confidence in the classroom and to grow in character outside of it. However,

we will listen, and continue to work in partnership with parents, as we develop

Kingswood House for the future.

Many thanks to those of you who were able to attend and listen to our Heads of

Department talk passionately about their subjects. Very exciting times lie ahead and

we will write to you soon with news about changes to our scholarship programme and

also in respect of the new Senior teaching accommodation. In order to read about my

Pupils from 6M displayed their anti bullying posters. We had a whole class discussion about this year's anti bullying theme - ‘All different. All unique’. The boys had some fantastic ideas on how they can be kind to one another and all came up with something that made them different to one another. Miss McSweeney

Joseph, 6R, brought in his dad's Navy hat and some photos of his time in the Navy. The whole class were fascinated to learn more about what being in the Navy involves and all that his Dad had done. Miss McSweeney

Year 3 enjoyed a fantastic day out at Holly Lodge in Richmond Park. In the morning, the boys had lessons at the formidable Mrs Sawyer’s Victorian Dame School - they came out very grateful to be pupils at Kingswood House!

After lunch, the boys stepped back in time again in Mr Palmer’s ‘Chymist’ shop. They learnt about healthcare in Victorian times and used herbs to make medicinal extracts. Mr Palmer’s shop was created from the original interior and artefacts from a real Victorian pharmacy in Mortlake and the boys were thrilled to be allowed to use the original pill-shaping equipment. Year 9 Trench report During half term, our prep was to build/make a World War One Trench. This was a very successful task. We used materials from home. We brought these in after half term and prepared presentations on our trenches. During the lesson we presented them and we also assessed each other’s trenches on the Trench Model (effort), features of the trench, presentation quality, explaining what conditions were like in the trenches and explaining what life was like in the trenches. During a lesson in the following week, we rearranged the tables to create our own trenches. We used newspaper as ammunition, and took turns attacking and hiding from bombardment. We showed the problems of trench warfare and artillery because the opposition well hidden from the bombardment. When the opposition went to attack, it was easier to spot them. It would have been very hard to reach the opposing trench because of barbed wire and other factors. We used chairs to show this. They often attacked in a line. During trench warfare most of the time no ground was gained. Thomas B, Olly G, 9H

This week in OT some of the boys chose the classic game of Jenga to improve their fine motor and manual dexterity skills. They focussed really well and some of them made very high towers, especially considering they were standing on uneven and wobbly balance boards! Angelo managed to get quite a high tower, within the time limit. Mrs Blore

This week Lower Prep have enjoyed craze of week in break times. There have been some great Lego models

constructed and many new basketball skills learned.

Ethan L, 5S, recently competed in a karate competition in Clacton-on-Sea. He wrote: ‘It was a national competition with over 10 clubs from around England competing. There were two main events, Kata and Kumite. Kata is a drill of complicated movements, performed like a fight, against imaginary opponents. Kumite is fighting and comes in various types such as Freestyle and Team fighting. I was in the Team fight and achieved a 1st for Kata and 3rd for Kumite’. Well done, Ethan!

I was pleased to attend the annual Remembrance ceremony and football Kingswood House and Parkside. Our 1st XI represented KHS and recited “The Soldier” by Rupert Brooke as a part of a fitting and moving ceremony. A great advertisement for strong, contemporary values. Mr Murphy

On Saturday, Mr Cowie, Mr Russell and Mr Rogers took the 1st XV to watch the first game of England’s autumn internationals

against Argentina. Mr Murphy also attended together with Mr Brooks, Mr Clarke, Mr Rudkin, Mr Mitchell and Mr March.

It was an enjoyable afternoon, in spite of a fairly attritional match, and the boys not only watched England seal a victory but also

secured a prime position to see all the players arrive at the ground and disembark from their team coaches.

It was a great team-building afternoon!

Sports Summary From Mr Cowie

This week saw a full house of fixtures against Duke of Kent, with teams from every age group in the school.

The Senior School kicked things off on Tuesday travelling to Duke of Kent. The A team had a great afternoon against their two A

team sides, losing one match 2-1 and drawing the other game 2-2, great performances from Jack Fernandes and Charlie Fowler.

The B team had a tough afternoon against a strong Duke of Kent side, but enjoyed the experience.

In Years 7 & 8, we had all four teams playing. The 1st XI had a great afternoon, although were slow to start their game.

They found themselves down 2-1 at half time, but after a sterling team talk from Mr Clarke managed to come up 5-3 winners.

This was a great team performance lead by Josh Johns and the eventual man of the match Leo Wood. Leo also managed to

score 4 goals. The 2nd team played extremely well, and controlled the entire game, the score ending 6-1, with great

performances from Ollie Taylor and Sam Slaney. The 3rd XI also enjoyed a great victory, with a great performance from Freddie

Harrison who also bagged himself two goals. And the 4th, although losing 1-0, had a great game against their opposition. Man

of the Match, Cameron Allenby, who also played in goal kept the side in the game, and deserves his man of the match award.

In the Colts teams, we were very successful. The A team played very well at home to hold onto a 1-1 draw, with keeper

Stuart Coleman taking the man of the match award. The rest of the teams, all played great football with plenty of goals.

Goals coming from Liam Wade (B team), Miles Ross (C team) and Raf Darwish (D team) are to mention but a few.

Well done the Colts teams!

In the Juniors, the U9s went away, and with small numbers, the A team were far stronger than their opponents, finishing the

game 6-1 whilst playing 5 vs. 9. The B team played the same team, and came up 2-0 winners as well. Goal scorers to mention are

Noah Seager in the A’s and Krishan Idrees in the B’s. The U8s played at home, C team leading the afternoon winning 1-0, with

new boy Jackson Worth picking up man of the match. The B’s lost but a good team performance lead by Henry Ruscoe and the

A’s struggled through a tough afternoon against a strong side, with Adam Gratton picking up 2 goals.

Please note – if boys are in Year 7 & 8 and want to be considered for the

1st & 2nd teams for rugby, they should bring their gum shields in for

both Monday’s and Wednesday’s game sessions. As we have no further

more football fixtures we plan to do some rugby training starting next

week.

Surrey Explorers

Surrey Explorers is the local branch of the National Association for Gifted Children. Its mission is to stretch, provide enrichment and to stimulate new interests. Open to all 7 - 13 year olds held at Kingswood House School in the Humanities building. For Sunday meetings, no pre-booking required.

Here are one or two puzzles I solved earlier, how they get into you so that everything you see becomes a puzzle. What is a puzzle anyway?

Philip's book, written with his Surrey Explorers son, will be out in October published by Tarquin Educational books.

December 3rd : How to Design a Satellite with David Wade. After considering the many applications for which we use satellites, you’ll select a mission and design your own satellite. Along the way you’ll consider the satellite’s payload, what orbit it will operate from and what systems the satellite will need to be able to work in space. This is one thing you do need a rocket scientist to guide you through, and David Wade truly is one. He is a also a Kingswood House parent.
