Winter Wonders 2017-2018

The Toddlers have been very

interested in making

playdough; we have experi-

mented with a few different

recipes as well as several

different colors –blue and

purple are favorites for the

children right now! While

making the playdough, the

children practice measuring,

pouring and gently stirring.

They cannot wait to get their

hands into their new sensory

fun! They love to ‘make’

cookies, pizza and roll balls.

Next we will talk about

Over the past month the Pre-

school children have been

highly interested in building

all sorts of obstacle courses,

train tracks and notorious

roadways! One activity in

particular that is sure to be

seen everyday is the creation

of a train. From the conduc-

tor, to the destination, and of

course the tickets...the Pre-

schooler’s creative minds

take off! We cannot wait to

turn our trains into sleds and

JUMP into a pile of much

anticipated snow.

mixing colors to make pretty

new playdough shades.

We love “the arts” in the In-

fant program! We enjoy being

“hands-on” with painting,

building and stacking! Co-

ordination is improved daily as

we engage in these activities.

Music and movement is also

very popular - singing and

musical shakers are favorites!

Winter is now sparking inter-

est as the new fallen snow is

discovered…

ing with yarn and large toddler-friendly ob-

jects. The trial and error of this beading ac-

tivity was most enjoyed by the children and

they took great joy and felt happy for each

other when they were successful.

We are looking forward to some ice painting

and spray-painting snow fun this winter!

EXPLORATION GALORE AT COLLINS BAY CCC!

The Toddlers have really enjoyed play-

ing outside in the leaves this Fall! We

went for a nature walk and collected

items to make nature bracelets and col-

lages.

The Toddlers also loved getting messy

with painting and sensory activities

such as water play and bubbles. The

children have also been practicing bead-

and admire the conviction and dedica-

tion of our Early Childhood Educators,

Support Employees, Board of Directors

and Families. It became clear to me

that because of the commitment and

progressiveness of this group, not only

will they lead Kingston Day Care into

the future but also, they are clearly lay-

ing the foundation for the next 50 years

and that is very exciting!

As we move into this season of celebra-

tion I wish you all the best this holiday

season.

Season’s Greeting!

Alison

What an exciting time it has been

for all of us at Kingston Day Care!

This year we have been celebrating

our 50th Anniversary; such an in-

credible milestone! In August we

held a fun-filled family afternoon at

Rotary Park; in September a Com-

munity Day at the Memorial Centre

Market and finally, in November a

private celebratory event for Staff,

Board and a few special guests. Each

event was quite different from the

other, yet each one clearly represent-

ed our organization, our families,

our Vision and our connection to the

community.

At each of these events I was able to

stand back and truly appreciate

There has been a lot happening at St.

Martha CCC; with school back in,

the children in the Before and After

School programs have been enjoying

rekindling old friendships, and wel-

coming new friends to their program!

The Infants have become “little

chefs” while trying our new recipes

in the crock pot; they had fun making

apple sauce and vegetable soup.

The Toddlers have been engrossed in

making forts and continue to expand

on their creativity with this interest.

What started out as a few cardboard

boxes, has now become lavish crea-

tions made from blankets and favor-

ite items from around the room.

With the passing of Hallowe’en,

the Preschoolers have become

very interested in pretend play

and dressing-up...even the educa-

tors have become involved with

this. Often you will see “a duck”

and “a dragon” reading books

together...or “a unicorn” making

dinner in the preschool home ar-

ea.

We are all bracing for the cold

winter, yet, along with the help

of the children, we look forward

to discovering new interests and

activities that we can do together

in the snow!

happiness. Knowing how

to read social cues, recog-

nize and regulate emo-

tions, negotiate and take

turns, and engage in a long

-term activity that is mutu-

ally beneficial are no easy

tasks. There is no substi-

tute for creative and imagi-

native play when it comes

to teaching and enhancing

these abilities in children.

Role play is an important part

of child development, as it

builds confidence, creativity

communication, physical devel-

opment and problem solving.

Along with being a fun activity,

it also allows children to get

into character and act out real

life roles or fictional perfor-

mances.

How we interact with others is

key to our lifelong success and

BENEFITS TO ROLE PLAY IN THE EARLY YEARS

PERLER BEAD MADNESS AT OLOL!

Our school age children have been creative with their learning.

They have been obsessed with perler melty beads! These are tiny,

colored beads that children place in a desired pattern onto a tem-

plate that can be ironed to fuse the perler beads together.

The children love that this activity creates a product for them to

keep. They made animals, reptiles and many other imaginative

designs. The fine motor movements involved in the activity help

practice vital skills that help to complete other tasks such as

writing and cutting—which are essential skills to acquire.
