Activity 1: Craft “Prayer Pouch”

Supplies: One copy of Appendix A per child; safety scissors; one paper plate per child (option: construction paper); tape, crayons or markers, stickers optional

Before class, fold paper plate or construction paper in half, top to bottom. Tape sides, leaving opening at top for prayer papers. If you want to speed things up, teacher can cut apart prayer papers before class.

Boys and girls, today we are going to make a prayer pouch to hold our prayer requests. You can decorate your pouches any way you want. When you are finished decorating them, I want you to cut apart the prayer requests. Give each child one copy of Appendix A.

The square that says “Prayer Pouch” needs to be taped on the front or back of your pouch and write your name on the line. You will take the prayer papers home. You can draw a picture of something you want God to help you with. Keep them in the pouch and when you say your prayers you can take out the pictures and use them to help you pray. Or you can have someone in your family write down what you say and they can read them to you when you say your prayers.

Song: Let’s sing our song of the week. (To the tune of Frere Jaques)Capitalized letters indicate emphasis on that syllable when the rhyme is sung.

Puppet Presentation

Supplies: Judy puppet, small stuffed animal

Presenter: Boys and girls, let’s call Judy. (Children call “Judy”. Judy comes out holding small stuffed animal.)

Judy: Hi, everyone.

Presenter: Hello Judy. Who is your friend you are carrying?

Judy: This is my friend Fluffy. Fluffy, say “hello” to the boys and girls. (Fluffy waves or says, hello.)

Presenter: Judy, why do you have Fluffy with you today?

Judy: I wanted to show her all my friends at church.

Presenter: That is really nice Judy. What else do you do with Fluffy?

Judy: I talk to Fluffy whenever I am happy or sad. Fluffy always listens to me. Fluffy is never too busy to listen to me.

Presenter: It's wonderful that you have Fluffy to talk to, Judy. Do you know that there is someone else we can talk to whenever we want? He is never too busy to listen.

Judy: Who could that be?

Presenter: It is God and Jesus. When we talk to God and Jesus, it is called 'praying'.

Judy: I knew that.

Presenter: Judy, today our Bible event is about a king named Hezekiah and how he prayed to God. Would you like to learn more about that Bible event?

Judy: Yes.

Presenter: First, let’s practice the take home point. I’ll say the first part and you

Bible Event: Costumed Biblical CharacterSupplies: Bible; King Hezekiah crown; sign with happy face on one side and sad face on the other side, “microphone” Presenter holds the Bible

Today, during the Bible event, I am going to hold up a sign that has a happy face on one side and a sad face on the other side. Show the sign. When I hold up the happy face, you say “Yea!” When I hold up the sad face you say “Boo!” Practice a couple times.

Today, we are going to hear about King Hezekiah who faced a bad king (hold up sad face) who wanted to fight his country. King Hezekiah prayed to God and God answered his prayer. (Hold up happy face.) To tell the story, I am going to interview someone who is pretending to be King Hezekiah. King Hezekiah, can you come out please?

Interviewer: Welcome, King Hezekiah. I understand that you and the Israelites have had some difficult problems recently.

King Hezekiah: Yes, we have but we prayed to God for help. God answered our prayers. (Hold up happy face.)

Interviewer: Tell us what happened.

King Hezekiah: The king of Assyria, Sennacherib, came to fight against my country, Judah. (Hold up sad face.) His soldiers surrounded our city.

Interviewer: What did you do?

King Hezekiah: We blocked off the water from the other army. We also fixed our wall and made new walls, built towers, and made new weapons and shields.(Hold up happy face.)

Interviewer: I guess that made your people feel a lot better.

King Hezekiah: It did, but I thought my people might be worried, so I gathered them together. I told them not to be worried, because God is more

powerful than the other army and would help us fight our battles. That made the people feel better. (Hold up happy face.)

Interviewer: What happened next?

King Hezekiah: Later King Sennacherib started to tease us and try to make us afraid of him. He said he had beaten other kings and could win against our God, too. He even sent us a letter that made fun of God. (Hold up sad face.)

Interviewer: Did that scare your people?

King Hezekiah: A man of God named Isaiah and I prayed to God for help. God answered our prayer. (Hold up happy face.) We reminded God that this evil king had made fun of him, and said that his false god was much stronger than the true and living God. (Hold up sad face.) We knew our God was the only God. Our God would defend us and defend our name. (Hold up happy face.)

After we prayed, we woke up the next morning and you won’t believe what we saw. Outside our city had been thousands and thousands and thousands of soldiers. Now they were all dead! In the middle of the night, God had sent an angel to fight and win against King Sennacherib and his army. God saved us! (Hold up happy face.)

Interviewer: That’s wonderful, King Hezekiah! Did you learn anything from that?

King Hezekiah: Yes, I did. I learned that the real King is God. I learned, *GOD IS OUR KING – we will pray to God. (Hold up happy face.)

Interviewer: Wow, King Hezekiah! Those are the words we are learning today! Thank you for sharing your story with us. I hope you can come back sometime.

King Hezekiah exits.

Boys and girls, let’s practice the take home point together. I will say the first part and you repeat the last part. *GOD IS OUR KING...We will pray to God.

Let’s fold our hands and pray. Repeat after me.

Dear God,We love you.You are our King.We will pray to you.

Page 11: KINGDOM QUEST - storage.cloversites.comstorage.cloversites.com/waipunachapel/documents/Kingd…  · Web viewKing Hezekiah went to sleep that night wondering how God would keep his

Remember how we folded our hands to pray? Now we are folding our bread. Did you know that folding your hands is not the only way to pray? Prayer is simply talking to God. Tell me some times when you could pray. (Answers will vary, but may include: anytime; in the car; before eating; before bed; before we get out of bed in the morning; walking, etc.)

Review the Bible Event. Take Offering for Fanny. Pray.

What problem did King Hezekiah and his people face in today's Bible event? (Bad King Sennacherib wanted to fight them.)

Let’s practice the take home point. *GOD IS OUR KING....We will pray to God.

Bible Application with Puppet Presentation:Bible Application with Puppet Presentation:Purpose: The puppet demonstrates the need that will be met in today’s lesson. The scripts are not written verbatim, but give a story line in which the group leader can interact with the puppet.

Bubba comes onto stage looking for a phone. He needs to call God. He’s got to talk to him. What’s God’s number? Does anyone have it? The large group narrator explains to Bubba that that’s not how a person talks to God. Bubba says that that’s how he talks to his Grandma, or his Dad at work, or other important people.

The large group presenter explains that it’s even easier than that to talk to God. All you have to do is pray. Bubba doesn’t know how to pray. The large group presenter explains that you can close your eyes and fold your hands and just talk to God. You can talk out loud or to yourself and God hears you, no matter what. Bubba thinks that that sounds good, but it’s almost lunchtime, so God will be too busy listening to other people. He’ll wait until God is less busy.

The large group presenter also explains that God is never too busy. He hears our prayers all day and all night, no matter what. In fact, one time the large group presenter woke up in the middle of the night. He had had a bad dream and he was a little afraid, so he prayed to God right then in the middle of the night, and God still listened!

Isn’t that cool? We should just remember that no matter what the problem is or what time it is, we can always talk to God, and he always hears us! Remember: *GOD IS OUR KING – Pray to the King.

Let’s fold our hands and pray. Repeat after me.

Dear God,We love you.You are our King.We will pray to you.Thank you, thank you, thank you.In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Activity 3: Game “Prayer Game”Supplies: Large bag; newspapers or paper for recycling

The purpose of the game is to fill a large bag with the children's prayers.

Boys and girls, I am going to give you some paper. I want you to crunch it up and we will take turns throwing them into the big bag. When it is your turn to throw the paper, say, “Dear God, please help me...then finish the sentence. Some of the things you could say are: be nice to my sister or brother; be safe; not be afraid of dogs; do well in school; listen to my dad; be safe in a storm; remember to share with my friends (you can add more examples if you wish). As the children play, remind them they can fill their lives with prayers, just like they filled the bag.

Review the Bible event. How did King Hezekiah and his people solve their problem? (They prayed to God and asked for his help.)

Let’s practice the take home point. *GOD IS OUR KING....We will pray to God.

Let’s fold our hands and pray. Repeat after me.

Goodbye boys and girls. Remember that God loves you and he wants us to pray to him.

If you still have extra time you can take personal prayer requests from the children but since you have already done that with the prayer pouch activity and the prayer game activity I don’t think it is necessary for this week. They really enjoy the music and I would rather have them spend more time learning the songs.
