Couples Hair Design, at the Nobleton Plaza, has decided to donate 100 free haircuts for kids just in time to head back to school.

“We’re just giving back to the community. We’ve got a lot of wonderful people coming into the community,” said Couples Hair Design owner Domenic Polito.

The first hundred Nobleton children from kindergarten to

Grade 8 who picked up a coupon for a free haircut from the shop have been able to get a trim in time to hit the books.

The program is available only until Tuesday, Sept. 8, and just on Monday and Tuesday from 9:30 to 6 p.m. Couples Hair Design is at 13305 Hwy. 27 in the Nobleton Plaza.

A King woman whose brother took his life less than three weeks ago is participating in a TV com-mercial to help break the silence on mental health.

Natalie Tinney travelled to Toronto last Friday to join in a TV shoot with the siblings of other youth suicides as part of a prov-incewide Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH) commercial that will hit the airwaves beginning Monday, Sept. 28.

Tinney’s younger brother Michael, 25, struggled with addic-tions and mental health issues for much of his life. He committed sui-cide on Aug. 15.

Since then Tinney, 30, has been hard at work raising awareness about mental health issues. She launched a GoFundMe campaign in Michael’s memory and plans to donate all the proceeds to CAMH. The fund had raised $3,505 from 73 donors by Monday night.

Tinney said she was the “fresh-est” of the bunch at the TV shoot with the next most recent death among other participants in the commercial coming nine months ago.

But she said it was worth it to raise awareness and get people talking about mental health issues.

She was asked last Friday what she would say to somebody suf-fering.

“Just talk. Talk to somebody, talk to your brother, your sister, your mom, your dad, your cousins, your aunt your uncle, your friends.

“Somebody will help you. If you don’t feel like you can get the help yourself, tell your best friend, ‘I’m hurting, I need help,’ and your best friend will help you,” said Tinney.

It pains her deeply that her brother refused to open up about the issues that were bothering him. Asked if Michael kept quiet and bottled up his feelings, Tinney said, “Always.”

She said she would tell her brother, if he were here now: “I’m sorry that I didn’t know and I wish that you had told me. And had you told me, I wish that I could have helped you, that I was sorry and that I loved him and then I would have punched him in the face and gave him a hug, if I could see him (again),” she said.

The commercial will feature four siblings showing photographs of the loved ones who took their lives. It will also point out one in five people suffer from depression, discuss getting help as well as a new CAMH fund designed to help with youth (14-30) suicide.

“The foundation’s looking for money to raise awareness and also money to start pilot projects, to keep existing programs going for people who are seeking treatment and funding for programs that are already in existence that are helping people,” said Tinney.

She said CAMH is also seeking funding to expand to more remote locations so that those needing treatment don’t have to drive into Toronto to get it.

An online campaign will also launch on Sept. 28 with CAMH sites on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter raising money and awareness over the issue of youth suicide. Tinney said the online feature will include links that will allow viewers to see siblings telling their personal sto-ries.

COMMUNITY NEWS

CAMH commercial to feature King resident

It’s time to get crafty in Schomberg.

The seventh annual Schomberg Street Gallery will feature fine arts and crafts along Main Street throughout down-town Schomberg.

Part of Main Street will be closed off to traffic. There will be tents on the street for the outdoor sale of fine arts and crafts and visitors will be able to meet and talk to artists. The Community Hall and Periwinkle Gallery will also be open.

There will be a wide range of art to choose from including oil, acrylic and watercolour paint-ings, photography and art made from wood, glass, metal as well as pottery, textiles and jewelry.

Sue Iaboni, president of Arts Society King said in a press release: “I love going to this great show, full of energy and gorgeous art pieces. No need to make the arduous trek into the city when we have this beautiful outdoor exhibition right here in King.”

Visitors can also take in one of the street-side cafes or enjoy a treat from the Lions barbecue.

The Schomberg Street Gallery takes place on Sunday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

AROUND KING

By Tim [email protected]

After working through the issue in a study session in July, Town-ship council has attempted to cut through the din and come up with a draft noise bylaw.

The draft bylaw will limit the number of noise bylaw exemp-tions to three per calendar year with exemptions required 30 days prior to the event, notice given to nearby properties, a cost of $50 per exemp-tion shall be required and, if an extra or special exemption is called for, council shall hear it.

John Flys of Nobleton has com-plained about noise coming from the Arbour Restaurant on Hwy. 27 more than two dozen times in the past seven years.

Flys lives on 15th Sideroad, about a half-kilometre from the Arbour.

He said he sees some merit in the draft bylaw reduction to three noise bylaw exemptions per year after complaining the Arbour has received many times that number of noise exemptions from the township since 2008.

But he said his “lawyer advises the impact of this (change) will also depend on what the new noise bylaw says in 2016.

He said that since King Township bylaw officers don’t work after 4:30 p.m. or on weekends or holidays, he’s also concerned about the strength of the draft bylaw.

Nobleton Councillor David Boyd said he believes the draft bylaw is the best compromise.

“I think council and staff have come up with a suitable solution to noise issues in Nobleton. I think for the most part a lot of it is just being neighbourly. Besy and I laid in bed, I think it was Saturday night last week, falling asleep to a ‘Mariachi’ band and somebody was having a 30th birthday party and god bless them. It didn’t bother me as a neighbour.

“I know at times people can maybe push the envelope a little. I think we’ve put in place an appro-priate bylaw to deal with that. This is a good example of us trying to be accountable and fair to all our resi-dents. I think it was a fair measure that was put in place,” said Boyd.

GTA West Corridor concerns

By Tim [email protected]

Nearly 50 Nobleton and area residents have signed a petition demanding the proposed GTA West Corridor highway take the most southerly route of three options available.

The residents, who live mostly on Diana Drive, Ranch Trail Road and King-Vaughan Road, made it clear in a letter to council last week, they don’t want the future highway coming anywhere close to their neighbourhood.

And the Township, which also doesn’t want the Province to approve the most north-erly option available, seems to agree with them.

The GTA West Corri-dor highway, which has been in the study stages for years and is well over a decade away from construc-tion, would link highways 401/407 to the southwest with Hwy. 400 in the northeast.

It’s under consideration to deal

with the expected growth in the GTA from a current population of 6.5 million to almost 10 million by 2041 and would take pressure off highways 401 and 407.

In a staff report that will be sent to the Ontario Ministry of Trans-portation, the Region of York and the City of Vaughan, King Town-ship makes a number of requests including:

• construction of interchanges at Weston Road and Hwy. 27;

• support of two southerly routes versus the most northerly route of the highway nearest the

Township;• interchange connectiv-

ity for both King-Vaughan Road and Kirby Road in the area of the GTA West Freeway be provided to ensure traffic from Hwy 400 has access to both

freeways;• that there be no link

between King Township’s Sev-enth Concession and Vaughan’s Pine Valley Drive.

It’s believed the freeway could be the answer to King’s long-

desired east-west bypass to take car and truck traffic off King Road.

But Councillor Debbie Schaefer has her doubts.

“I don’t think the GTA West Cor-ridor is the right solution. I think there’s a very low probability of that (bypass) happening since it seems to be a toll road, it’s quite evident that trucks right now don’t use the 407 ETR as much as they could because it’s a toll; skeptical about this one possible benefit to us,” said Schaefer.

Nobleton Councillor David Boyd raised worries about truck traffic coming off the proposed freeway and heading north on Hwy. 27, proceeding through Nobleton.

He asked staff to “work with the region to mitigate the north-south traffic through the village of Nobletion (along Hwy 27).”

Concerned Citizens of King Township stayed consistent in their stance along with the Ontar-io Greenbelt Alliance that the road is unnecessary and the group remains opposed to it.

The report was approved.

Proposed highway would link a number of existing 400-series highways

If you’re from Schomberg you know all about Sheena’s Kitchen.

Think lemon cake. Or how about butter tarts.

Is your mouth watering?Sheena’s has become

famous for such delectable homemade dishes. On Tues-day, elected officials were among those who paid tribute to the 83-year-old local leg-end that hung up her apron at the end of June after more than 30 years of service.

Sheena Henderson, the woman behind Sheena’s Kitchen at 357 Main St., while retired from the business, has left a lasting impression, said Mayor Steve Pellegrini.

“She is a really super per-son,” said the mayor.

“I wish her all the best in her retirement but I don’t

think it was work for her, I think it was a love; you need to have a passion to do it for that long, for that well. She always has a smile on her face,” he said.

Pellegrini said his personal connection with Henderson and Sheena’s Kitchen came a number of years ago when he was the township’s Commu-nities in Bloom chairman.

“She would open up and let us meet there and she

would provide coffee and muffins and we would always offer to pay and she would say, ‘No, no, no, you guys are doing great stuff for the com-munity, this is my way of giv-ing back.’ She was always like that, very quiet and very sup-portive of the community,” said Pellegrini.

For Henderson, her love of the tea room and serving customers is what made her enjoy what she did so much.

“I really liked serving the customers; I got to know most of the local people because they became regulars or staff,” said Henderson.

She said retiring a few months ago was “not a tough decision. It was time, every now and then you just know what to do.”

But she added, “it was lovely to meet people you recognize all the time.”

Keep eyes open on political scenet may seem hard to believe, but it has been a month since the federal election was called. No doubt, you’re probably starting to tire of all of the

back and forth taking place in the media between the four major party leaders on a daily basis and the seemingly endless series of attack ads that have been flooding the airwaves during this extraordi-narily long campaign period.

After all of that, no one would blame you for feeling a bit of fatigue with the political process, especially with nearly a month-and-a-half to go before voting day Oct. 19.

As difficult as it may seem, hang in there, because not only is it important for you to gather good information to make a decision ahead of next month’s federal elec-tion, it’s just as vital that you pay attention to what’s going on down at Queen’s Park as the provincial legislature resumes Sept. 14.

The federal campaign may be in the spotlight right now, but the Ontario government under Lib-eral Premier Kathleen Wynne has some pretty significant business to deal with.

For starters, the government is expected to forge ahead with its controversial plan to sell off 60 per cent of Hydro One, which it hopes will yield $9 billion.

Of that figure, about $5 bil-lion will go toward paying down Hydro One’s debt, leaving some $4 billion to fund the transporta-tion and transit infrastructure the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, which includes York Region, badly needs.

The plan has generated plenty of criticism from opposition par-ties, pundits, citizens and other organizations.

Recently, the Ontario Cham-ber of Commerce issued a letter requesting assurances from the province that the partial sale of Hydro One won’t result in higher electricity prices or otherwise lead to new cost pressures for busi-nesses.

In a responding letter, Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli sidestepped the question and outlined the role of the Ontario Energy Board and cited several

programs the province has intro-duced to help businesses lower their energy costs.

It’s not a very comforting response.

Also in the provincial gov-ernment’s sights is the goal of establishing a new Ontario Retire-ment Pension Plan, which would require all workers and employers in the province whose workplaces don’t currently have a comparable defined benefit pension plan to pay into it to the tune of 1.9 per cent each (3.8 per cent combined) on an employee’s annual earnings up to $90,000.

While some groups have voiced support for action on the pension issue, others have expressed concern about the abil-ity of employers and employees alike to afford it.

Today’s byelection in the Sim-coe North riding, set in motion by the resignation of longtime Pro-gressive Conservative MPP Gar-field Dunlop, has been labelled by some pundits as a referendum on the two aforementioned plans, among others, proposed by the current Liberal government.

Regardless of the outcome of today’s vote, Ontarians should be keeping at least half an eye on Queen’s Park, even amidst this federal campaign, and be ready to contact their MPP in the event the province takes advantage of the fact so much attention is focused on the federal campaign and attempts to take a big step forward on one of its more major, contro-versial initiatives.

The last thing anyone should want to have happen is for a mas-sive and potentially costly piece of policy to sneak through while everyone’s gaze was fixed else-where.

It may be trying for some to follow two levels of government at the same time, but just look at it like this: the provincial legislature will be off until mid-February in just three months and the federal scene will also be fairly low-key following the election.

BOTTOM LINE: Keep close eye on what’s happening

at Queen’s Park despite federal campaign/election.

Re: Lock out teachers, break union, opin-ion by Rod Urquhart, yorkregion.com.

Banks and other large companies, after posting large profits, often lay off staff. Corporations are hiring part-time work-ers. Industries are always looking for ways to save on wages. Is it any wonder that more and more young people are choosing teaching as a career?

The Ontario College of Teachers limits the number of places for new teachers at faculties of education. However, potential teachers go to Buffalo, Australia and other places to get their Ontario standard teach-ing degrees. These things, plus not as many children attending schools, lead to a glut of teachers.

Going to a foreign land with a teaching degree in hand is not a negative thing. I go to Taiwan every two years and always meet teachers from around the world. None of these young people have said they regretted the experience. Some made enough money to pay off school loans, as the cost of living is cheap. Starting a business is a lot easi-er, which they wouldn’t have done if they stayed home. Travelling to all the nearby countries and picking up a foreign language

along the way adds to their education. Taking away the right to unionize is

unconstitutional. It may get your landscap-er friend a job, however it would undermine one of his reasons for going into teaching: security. He would worry that he could be laid off if cheaper labour was available. He would have to take the salary set out by his employer or be fired. Once insecu-rity comes back to teaching, a new crop of teachers would most likely start a union.

When I was young, I had the opportuni-ty to be a teacher. I turned it down because I wasn’t interested. Some of my buddies became teachers. I don’t envy them.

Urquhart says he worked 40 years as a journalist and never made the money teachers make. He seems to think that teaching is a great “gig”. My question to him and people like him is, “Why didn’t you become a teacher?”

NaNcy HopkiNsoNSpecial to The Connection

On Labour Day weekend, Sunday, Sept. 6, Nobleton United Church welcomes you to its regular service time of 11:15 a.m. in Nobleton at 6076 King Rd., west of Hwy 27, north side. Please park in the spacious parking lot in the rear. If you need help with stairs, we have a ramp to the rear door and then a chair lift to get you up seven steps. Church is a lively place where we sing and clap and really have a good time, while we consider faith questions, such as what would Jesus do in this situation?

September’s Messy Church will be on Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m. Normally we have it on the second Tues-day of every month, but this month that date is the first day of school. If you have not tried Messy Church, you will have a treat. There are choices of activities that appeal to vari-ous ages for the first hour. The activities always depend on the theme. September’s theme is “Jesus is the true vine.” There are always cookies in the theme to decorate and then eat. The story time is at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at

6:15 p.m. We always have raw veggies and dip, and fruit, as well as some protein to com-plete the meal, such as meat-balls, chicken nuggets, lasagna and ham. When the meal is done, you can do more activi-ties or just socialize. This is a good time of food, faith and fun and it is free, as Nobleton United provides the funding as an outreach activity. After the story last time, we adults got into a big discussion about bullying and the effect this has on everyone. We decided that we must speak out if we see bullying anywhere, even in the workplace.

Sunday, Sept. 13 at 11:15 a.m. is Rally Day and there will be lunch after the service.

On Thursday, Sept. 24, we are having a Harvest Dinner with chicken and all the fix-ings and delicious homemade harvest pies. Tickets are $20. You might want to call Helen Bible right now at 905-859-3924 to reserve your place as

the space is limited. This is a sit-down dinner with white table cloths and ample time to chat to friends and neigh-bours.

We will be having a Joint Anniversary Service with Schomberg United Church on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 11:15 a.m. in Nobleton. At that time, we will celebrate Nobleton’s cross, and the various stained-glass windows of our church. Our first two windows were originally installed in another church: one shows a boy sow-ing seeds and the other shows someone knocking at the door. We also have windows that celebrate “choir,” “quilt-ing,” “farming” and “three generations of women.” Each window has a special saying on a small window under-neath related to the picture above. We will also celebrate Schomberg United’s history. We hope that our Nobleton and Schomberg communities will want to attend to admire these windows and the cross and to celebrate our histories with us. There will be a lunch afterwards.

Did you know that a member of Samuel Champlain’s expe-

dition in 1615 followed the Carrying Place Trail through King Township and became the first Euro-pean to set foot in Ontario and see Toronto and Lake Ontario?

His name was Étienne Brûlé.

The 400th anniversary of French presence and his passage through Ontario is being commemorated in King Sept. 12 from 4 to 5 p.m.

With provincial sup-port, La Société d’histoire de Toronto is organizing a re-enactment with a 40-kilometre canoe voyage starting in Orillia, followed by hikers continuing from Holland Landing 85 kilo-metres south to the mouth of the Humber River in Toronto.

The hikers/canoeists come from Ontario, all across Canada and from the First Nations. Some are even from Champigny-

sur-Marne, Brûlé’s native village in France. Everyone — sports lovers, history lovers, heritage lovers, stu-dents, families, etc. — is invited to join in, by canoe or on foot, for the entire journey or a few steps along the route.

At various points along

the portage, local heritage associations and commu-nities are expecting them. The welcoming of the hik-ers/canoeists echoes what Champlain recorded in his diary in 1615: “In all these villages, they received us very courteously and kindly.”

It is in this spirit that King Township and Toron-to Regional Conservation Authority will welcome the hikers at the end of their hike Sept. 12 at Weston Road/16th Sideroad at about 4 to 5 p.m. In addi-tion to celebrating their arrival with music and refreshments, a new histor-ical plaque will be unveiled at the site with a map of The Carrying Place Trail.

Come join in and learn more about a part of Cana-da’s early history that hap-pened right here in King.

AROUND KING

By Tim [email protected]

When Seneca College employee Kelly Mathews started writing several years ago, she didn’t expect her book to sell out.

The erstwhile author, whose Eaton Hall: Pride of King Township went on sale at the end of June, has near-ly sold its entire first run of 1,000 copies.

It’s a big surprise to the modest Mathews, who doesn’t even have her offi-cial book launch until Sept. 16 at Eaton Hall.

“If this sells a thou-sand copies in my lifetime, I would be shocked, so to be almost there in the first month-and-a-half is pretty

crazy for me. It’s not expect-ed, very surreal,” Mathews said.

The book tells the story of Lady Eaton and the hall she inhabited in King Town-ship from 1920 to 1970. Lady Eaton, who married into the iconic department store family in 1901, was a famous society figure who

lived from 1880 to 1970.Mathews’ book has been

promoted this summer in the pages of the Toronto Star and TV Guide, much to the delight of the author.

“One of my staff saw it and my dad saw it in the TV Guide. I didn’t expect that, it just makes me laugh. People are actually reading this,” she said.

The official book launch is Sept. 16. It’s a private affair and will include King Township Mayor Steve Pel-legrini, Seneca College President David Agnew, Fredrik Eaton, grandson of Lady Eaton, and members of the King Township Heri-tage Committee, historical society and library, among others.

The book can be pur-chased online from numer-ous book websites such as Indigo.ca and Amazon.ca and in various bookstores.

Ontario Provincial Police are looking to spread the word about the potentially deadly con-sequences of distracted driving.

To that end, they are hosting a media confer-ence Friday morning at the ONroute service plaza, located on Hwy. 400 north of Teston Road in King Township.

Kathryn and Nigel Field, whose son died in a dis-tracted driving related collision, will be there to tell the story of how this dangerous trend changed their lives.

OPP Chief Supt. Chuck Cox, divisional com-mander of the Highway Safety Division, and Elliott Silverstein, government relations manager of CAA South Central Ontario, will also speak at event, which will also highlight back to

school safety, pedestrian safety and how eliminat-ing distraction is just as important for cyclists and pedestrians as it is for drivers.

The media conference is being held in the wake of stiffer new penalties for distracted driving, which came into effect Tuesday,

Sept. 1. Drivers can now be fined up to

$1,000 (up from $280) and receive three demerit

points if police catch them. So far this year,

there have been 41 distracted or inattentive related fatalities on pro-vincial highways, accord-ing to police.

In 2014, there were more than 8,500 collisions associated with inattentive or distracted driving and 72 people died on Ontario highways.

The massive project to expand the King campus of Seneca College has taken one more step.

Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Seneca have released the request for proposals (RFP) and now await a six-month deadline for three teams to design, build and finance the $43 million project.

The project will boost enrolment on the King cam-pus by 1,450 full-time to stu-dents to more than 5,000 and includes:

• a new academic build-ing with 25 new classrooms,

computer labs, labs for train-ing health-care practitioners, more library, learning com-mons and student study space;

• a new student centre with a multi-purpose athletic and recreation space including a gymnasium, fitness centre, study areas and event spaces;

• upgrades to Garriock Hall, the main existing aca-demic building, and to exist-ing services.

Ellis Don Corporation, PCL Constructors Canada Inc., and E2P Educational and Environmental Partner-

ship have been shortlisted to submit bids. A preferred bid-der will be announced in the summer of 2016.

“We are delighted to take another step toward a new and revitalized King Cam-pus,” said Seneca College president David Agnew in a news release. “The expansion project will help Seneca to continue to meet the needs of our students and allow us to offer expanded program offerings and student services for generations to come, par-ticularly for our York Region community.”

A pair of veteran City of Toronto coun-cillors have come forward to publicly endorse King-Vaughan NDP candidate Natalie Rizzo in

the Oct. 19 federal election.Maria

Augimeri, who represents Ward 9 (York Centre) and Anthony Perruzza, repre-

sentative for Ward 8 (York

With a twist on Where’s Waldo?, York Region resi-dents were invited to Find Frank for the chance to win tickets to the 2015 Magna Wild Wild West Showdown and Hoedown.

All day Tuesday, Magna Neighbourhood Network co-ordinator Erin Cerenzia toted a life-size cutout of company founder Frank Stronach to various locations. Clues as to his whereabouts were posted on Facebook and Twitter. The 12-hour, eight-location marathon kicked off at the network’s Yonge St. office in Aurora at 8:30 a.m.

Within 15 minutes, local sleuths had come forward to discover first location of the cardboard cowboy.

“That’s a record,” Ceren-zia said after handing Sept. 19 Hoedown tickets to Greg Smith and Sept. 18 Show-down passes to Meghan Ire-land.

The first two people who arrive at each correct loca-tion got their choice of nights

to see The Jim Cuddy Band Friday or Dallas Smith and The Roadhammers Saturday.

Smith happened to be picking up a coffee nearby when he checked his social media sites.

“It’s hard not to recognize this location,” he said of the network’s office, where Cow-boy Frank stood sentry on the lawn.

The Aurora resident, a

principal with Promotional Marketing, said the tickets were to be raffled at Wednes-day’s Aurora Winter Blues Festival at Town Park starting at 6:30 p.m.

Smith, a festival organizer, said the proceeds will help support the group’s youth music program, an initiative that provides instruments and lessons for deserving kids.

KING AND BEYOND

BY CHRIS [email protected]

The newly amalgamat-ed United Ways of Toronto and York Region this week launched an inaugural regionwide campaign with a goal to raise a record $100 million.

Toronto Mayor John Tory helped kick-start the ambi-tious initiative that runs until the end of the year.

This historic fundraiser will bring together more than 164,000 supporters from the waterfront of down-town Toronto to the south-ern shores of Lake Simcoe, United Way 2015 campaign chairperson Mark Wiseman said.

The target is the largest

amount the charity has ever raised to directly invest in improving lives locally, said Wiseman, who serves as Canada Pension Plan Invest-ment Board president and CEO.

In addition to the $100 million, the agency is com-mitted to raising additional millions on behalf of other charities.

Funds raised will sup-port a network of 220 agen-cies across Toronto and York Region and innovative Unit-ed Way initiatives as part of the agency’s new strategic plan, United Way president and CEO Susan McIsaac said.

“This campaign is about so much more than the money we raise,” she said

“It’s about improving peo-ple’s lives in the communities where they live and work.”

The campaign has already had a strong start thanks to the generosity of donors Donald Guloien and Irene Boychuk. The Guloien Family Challenge Grant will provide up to $1.2 million to match all new donations.

“I’m honoured and hum-bled to be joined by more than 25,000 volunteers in more than 760 workplaces as we unite around a common goal — building a stronger Toronto and York Region for everyone,” Wiseman said.

he doorbell woke up Lucy Bucci at 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 29, 2014.

Her son, Michael, hadn’t arrived home to

Richmond Hill following recre-ation hockey in Scarborough.

She went to the door, wonder-ing who it could be?

Her first foggy thought was Michael had forgotten his house key or maybe her daughter, Melis-sa, had forgotten hers.

But when she peeked through the window, Lucy saw two police officers and two women from vic-tim services.

She soon got the news every parent dreads.

“Your son was in a terrible car accident,” the officer said. “He succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.”

Lucy said her husband, Bruce, with serious health concerns of his own, was hysterical at the news and her daughter was frozen stiff at the top of the stairs.

As for Lucy, her brain simply shut down, then and there.

The next day at 7 a.m., she went to the coroners’ office in Toronto to identify her only son.

“I saw him on a screen. The detectives were still there. He was just smiling, with a beautiful little smile with his eyes closed. He looked angelic,” Lucy said.

“It’s just a horrible, horrible

thing to go through.”Lucy desperately wanted to

know what caused the single car crash on Elgin Mills Road in Rich-

“Adored by children, universally respected and an inspiration to her peers, Mrs. McCluskey was a tireless volunteer, quick to defl ect the praise heaped on her.”

mond Hill that took Michael’s life at the age of 27.

But nobody could give her any answers.

“It eats away at you — initially, every day I was searching and searching for an answer. I met with the coroner twice.

“No alcohol, no sickness, no drugs, no texting. How did this happen? Is it mechanical? Is it human error? What caused this? The officer stated the only person who knows is not here to tell us,” she said.

Lucy only has memories of Michael now, the young man she remembers vividly.

“I miss that boy. I miss his walking in saying, ‘Hello, hello, what’s for dinner, what are we eatin’ tonight,’ cause he was all about food,” she said in a recent phone conversation.

Michael was the kind of man she said, who, “no matter where he went, he stopped and spoke to every single person, even if he hadn’t seen them in 15 years, he stopped and talked to them.”

“So many people in the com-munity have told me he came up to them and said, ‘How’s it going, how are you doing?’

Michael was such a regu-lar young man, with goals and dreams of the future. He attended elementary school at Our Lady Help of Christian and Father Henri Nouwen and went to high school at St Theresa of Liseuix. With fiancée Jessica Couto, he had plans to marry this past April. The two had been together five years at the time of the crash, had pur-

chased a house, were saving for their future together and were big Maple Leaf fans.

Michael was a Red Seal electri-cian, helped out his grandparents in Caledon by mowing the grass in summer and covering the air-conditioner in winter.

He was a true outdoorsman, according to his mom, a videogra-pher who started a small business, Camvast Productions with two friends doing videos and photog-raphy and produced a book called Glory and Triumph. His mom called him “a mover and shaker.”

Lucy and Melissa have had a tough year. Bruce, who has scle-roderma, an autoimmune disease that is a chronic hardening and tightening of the skin, is now terminally ill with lung cancer. Just 54, Bruce is back and forth to Sunnybrook Hospital and is very sick.

“I haven’t been able to take a breath,” Lucy said in mid-August.

She has plans to have a memo-rial for Michael, but they are on hold for now. She only knows that she wishes she had travelled more with her son when she had the chance.

“I was one of these parents, I would read about it in the paper and hear it on the news and I’d say, ‘Oh my God, that poor family and on and on.’

“When I went through this I said, ‘Oh, this wasn’t supposed to be me.’”
