Do we live in admiration, respect, amazement, wonderment, and reverence of God? That is our goal as a church: to show the world that we are people who are in absolute awe of God. Many within the church live in such a “state of awe” of God that they are willing to step out of their comfort zones, engaging in faith-forming relationships, in order to help other people find fullness in Christ. Be with us in worship on September 9th as we begin our next sermon series, “Let Us Live in Awe of God.”

SEPTEMBER 9 BECAUSE AWE FOSTERS FAITH IN GOD • MARK 7:24-37The greatness of this Phoenician woman’s faith consisted of: 1) her willingness to cross the barrier of racism, 2) her refusal to be put off or ignored because of her position in life, and 3) her humility in admitting that she did not deserve the Master’s attention and time.

SEPTEMBER 16 BECAUSE AWE FOSTERS TRANSFORMATION • MARK 8:27-38 Anything you save, you will lose. Anything you share, you will regain. And that which you surrender to God, God will bless in a wondrous way. God will transform it into something beautiful and worthy. Isn’t it time you surrendered your life to God?

SEPTEMBER 23 BECAUSE AWE FOSTERS SUCCESS • MARK 9:30-37We all know what it is to feel pressured to be successful, accordingly to worldly standards. So how does success “Jesus-style” differ from worldly success?

SEPTEMBER 30 BECAUSE AWE FOSTERS PEACE • MARK 9:38-41When truth and love unite within an individual or a church, then we become what Jesus called “the salt of the earth.” As “salt” we are able to preserve and bring out the beauty of our faith - a faith that proclaims peace between God and humanity, and peace between you and me.

tapestries made in the Middle Ages, but tapestry making and weaving in general is an art form that knows no cultural boundaries, or place in time. Tapestries are beautiful pictures created with thread structured by the horizontal thread (the weft) rows, and the vertical thread (the warp) columns. The amazing part is that the WEFT rows (horizontal) create the picture by weaving those threads back and forth over the WARP rows (vertical). As each WEFT row is weaved the WARP rows begin to disappear and before you know it, you begin to see glimpses of beauty. Our lives are a tapestry that God is creating…sometimes we cannot see what He is making. And we even question what it is that He is creating. All the while He is “anchoring” us with His love, perfection, patience, strength and endurance. I can’t think of a more beautiful picture than that. Listen to what Paul says in II Corinthians:

“For momentary, light aff liction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison. While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

II Corinthians 4:17-18

My challenge to you is that you understand that God has also purposefully given you the high honor of being one He deems suited for a task with heavenly implications—as I used to tell my women in my Bible studies and my children, “God has asked you to join Him in this magnificent, divine dance. Will you be His partner? God is a perfect gentleman and will bow out if you so desire. There will be no forced dances with Him. But, oh, what a loss for you.” I am yielding to His call and I KNOW that there will be something beautiful at the end of this, because there is surrender!

Blessings,

Lisa

I wanted to take this opportunity to personally thank so many of you that have been praying for me, feeding my family, caring for my children and loving my husband. Cancer was not something that either Mike or I ever dreamed we would be dealing with, but here we are. At times it was a very lonely road, one that had to be taken alone. We are both so thankful for a congregation that has loved us and supported us every step of the way. We could not have done this without you in our lives. I know that this is why the church family exists… to love and serve each other and to show God’s glory by our actions and our words. You have all been so inspiring to me over these past months and I am so thankful for all of the gifts, cards and prayers. I will never be able to thank everyone personally enough but I pray that my life will be so loud from this point on that you will know my heart and know that YOU were a part of my healing process.

I am amazed that when we are all alone with God, how He empowers us to face our fears. As I contemplated what lay ahead for me I could not help asking God, “What is to come of this? I am listening, God... speak and let me know. I do not question why... but ask, what is next?”

I cannot help thinking that God’s calling upon you and me is not just something that we feel comfortable with and dream up ourselves, but rather something that God chooses for us above anyone else to do, and provides us the means to do it. Sometimes I would tell myself, “This is impossible!” and then God would tell me, “But you are the one I have singled out and pinpointed as my partner for this particular project.” It may seem unbearable to endure, but I am the one God has temporarily chosen to display God’s glory, even in my own weakness and brokenness. It is like when a tapestry is made. There were marvelous

THE BULLY NEXT DOOR

Page 5: September 2012 Connection

people helping people find fullness in Christ

Although Jesus calls us to a life of forgiveness and compassion, even Jesus did not tolerate those who dishonored God’s holy temple. With righteous indignation, Jesus turned over tables and drove out moneychangers and those who were selling doves within the walls of the temple, accusing them of turning His father’s house into “a den of robbers”.

As Christians, I believe we are called to play an unusual role in dealing with bullies. It is not a role the world plays - filled with anger and vengeance. It is not a role of passivity. It is not a role of hate. We are called to love our enemies, to pray for them, but to stand firm against unrighteousness and injustice. We are called to draw a line in the sand about our beliefs. We are not aggressive, but we are assertive. We are not boastful, but we are confident about God’s wishes for God’s people. Most importantly, we cannot ignore the problem.

Ignoring a true bully does not make the bullying stop. It just fuels the bully’s need for power. So what can help? First, praying for God’s wisdom in the situation. And understanding that God loves you, and all God’s people, and wants not one of His children to be victimized in any way. Then, if there are threats or violence, getting to somewhere safe and telling someone in authority about the situation. If the bullying is of an emotional nature, determine to respectfully take a stand on what you believe God is calling you to do. If it is important enough, then be strong and take a stand. While that is not a guarantee a bully will back down, it is a start to building moral courage in your heart. And bullies cannot stand that.

Let’s stand firm, not be the victims, and protect those that are victimized by the bullies of this world.

“For the wicked will be destroyed, but those who trust in the Lord will possess the land.

Soon the wicked will disappear. Though you look for them, they will be gone. The lowly will possess the land and will live in peace and prosperity.

The wicked plot against the godly; they snarl at them in defiance. But the Lord just laughs, for he sees their Day of Judgment coming.”

Psalm 37:9-13

It seems to me that bullying is becoming more and more prevalent in our society. It used to be something that only happened on a school playground. However, more and more stories of bullying are surfacing. The most shocking ones make the news, but those are only a small percentage of the actual bullying incidents that take place. Sadly, victims of bullies often keep silent due to shame, intimidation and a silent, unspoken code.

But the schoolyard is not the only place we are finding bullies. Bullies are everywhere. They are in offices, committees, community meetings and politics. They are found anywhere they can dominate through force of will. I believe they have intimidated a generation of people long enough - it is time to take a stand and stop being their victims.

Sadly, many well-meaning Christians have “turned the other cheek” when bullied. However, a closer examination of that passage reveals something vitally important. Turning the other cheek involves us willingly ignoring an offense to us, even though we could defend ourselves. We do not turn away because we are afraid, threatened, manipulated, or lied to.

Page 6: September 2012 Connection

As he prayed, Wesley also read the Bible, doing so worshipfully, expecting to encounter God and to “find the way to heaven.” He read in order to apply God’s Word to his own life, but also to find what it was God wanted him to teach others. With great humility, he shared the insights he had gained, relying on God’s Holy Spirit to apply them as needed in the hearer’s life. He knew the Bible invited believers to be shaped by a different God than success or whatever the world might offer.

Perhaps the most awe-inspiring means of God’s grace for Wesley was the Lord’s Supper. To him, it was not only a memorial meal, but also the very real presence of Christ. In the celebration of Communion, Wesley believed the risen Christ chose to be present to all at the table by the power of the Holy Spirit. The mystery of this encounter could never fully be understood, Wesley said, but the effects of it would be evidenced in transformed lives, different values, lasting peace, and unexplainable joy.

Our awe of God depends, in part, on what we believe about who God is and how God works. It also depends on how we experience God as Holy Other. A divine encounter with God involves a sense of fear, wonder, and awe. It is an experience of the irresistible grace of God that draws us closer and closer to God, toward a mystical union with God, if not in this present life, then certainly in the next. Wesley lived in awe of God’s majesty his entire life. On the day before he died, he gathered what strength he had and began singing, “I’ll praise my Maker while I’ve breath; and when my voice is lost in death, praise shall employ my nobler powers. My days of praise shall ne’er be past, while life, and thought, and being last, or immortality endures.” When he could sing no more, he spoke his last words, “The best of all is, God is with us.” When we believe that God is with us, and that we can be assured of that presence through prayer and Bible study and Communion, then we can truly live in awe of God. Thanks be to God.

“I believe the merciful God regards the lives and tempers of men more than their ideas. I believe he respects the goodness of the heart rather than the clearness of the head; and that if the heart of a man be filled (by the grace of God, and the power of his Spirit) with the humble, gentle, patient love of God and man, God will not cast him into everlasting fire. . . because his ideas are not clear, or because his conceptions are confused. Without holiness, I own, no man shall see the Lord. . .” John Wesley

John Wesley was wholly devoted to God. He rose early every morning in order to spend time with God and to devote himself to more perfectly loving God and his neighbors. He presented himself to God just as he was in that moment, acknowledging his mistakes, admitting the dryness of his faith, surrendering himself as completely to God as he humanly could. Through his praying he sought to apply God’s grace, trusting his experience of a loving God who had constantly offered him healing and restoring grace. Wesley knew his hope lay in relationship and fellowship with God. So he maintained his discipline of prayer and study even when he didn’t feel especially close to God. His was a devotional life, not a life that happened to include devotional time.

Prayer, for Wesley, was the “spiritual breathing” that sustained a Christian’s life in Christ. Such breathing was a divine gift given by God and enabled by the Holy Spirit so that awe-inspiring connection and communion might be possible. For more than 50 years, Wesley fixed his mind on God at the beginning of every new day so that he might be oriented toward God throughout the day. He prayed privately and waited quietly to receive God’s blessings. He prayed without ceasing, leaving himself reminders if he thought the busy-ness of the day might distract him. He found ways to pray with others because he knew corporate prayer would deepen Christian fellowship and open doors for the Holy Spirit to work in the hearts of everyone in the church.

Paul Tillich, the great 20th century theologian, once pointed out that loneliness expresses the pain of being alone while solitude expresses the glory of being alone. He said the glory of solitude is experienced when it is freely chosen. I have freely chosen to do something that will tax me in every conceivable way in order to experience the glory of God and fill my heart through worship. I’m sure I’ll lose a few toenails, though I prefer to lose a few pounds. But it won’t be about that. I’ll come back with plenty of bruises and lots of stories to share. Still, that won’t be most important. What will really, really matter is reconnecting to my center, Jesus Christ, and going with the f low of the rhythm of God’s Spirit as it prays within me.

I’ll be praying for you along the trail and invite you to seek a time of solitude for yourself in which to nourish your prayer life and worship the God who simply is.

Solitude is something we all need, but it’s especially restorative for introverts like me. Just as Jesus advised His followers, we need to get away to a mountain alone, go to our private closets and pray in secret, or otherwise find a way to take a break from this overstimulated and over-stimulating world we live in. The goal of spending an extended period of time in solitude, for me at least, is to be able to live, as the song says, from the “inside out” as opposed to the “outside in.” This is what I hope to receive from every experience of worship, but when Sunday’s a “work day,” that’s not always possible. So I’ve planned for a September hike along portions of the Pacific Crest Trail, accompanied by my EMT-certified, Rocky Mountain Rescuer son, Wendell. We’ll start south of Portland, Oregon, and end up north of Seattle, Washington.

To get ready I prayed, I trained (with help), I read, I took classes, and I researched more gear than I can ever imagine a use for. I even considered a gun purchase, and though I’m Texas born and bred, decided it just wasn’t me (still, you should have seen Bob and the salesman duck behind the counter)!
