You were able to celebrate together the ministry and relationship from those years and end your ministry together on with gratitude for each other’s gifts and faithfulness. Entering into a time of transition as the pastoral charge began its Joint Needs Assessment brings a number of challenges, and often anxiety as well as grief to those closest to the minister who has left. In the midst of that, however, Carlisle and Kilbride both have welcomed me with great warmth and generosity. The interview process was undergone with thoughtfulness and with a spiritual grounding and inquiry that I found very positive. I believe that to hold on to that groundedness will serve you well in the Search Process as well. I began my ministry as year- long full-time Presbytery supply with you in September. I am sure that the many changes that come with a new minister bring a sense of discomfort, but I appreciate the patience and good humour that has been displayed through that discomfort and know that it too will serve you well in the transitions that will come in the coming year as you enter into relationship with a new minister once again. Before my arrival there were some conversations underway to seek creative ways of sharing the challenges and joys of ministry in the North Burlington area. These conversations have continued with some of the churches becoming more concrete in their plans to amalgamate or close. Kilbride has not proceeded in this area, and is not planning any disengagement from Carlisle United Church. The reality of the challenges that are facing almost all churches in these days may mean some future conversations with churches that have expressed interest in cooperation, but these conversations have been suspended until such a time as you have a called minister who is established enough to understand the communities and your needs as a Pastoral Charge. As in every year, we have a number of losses to our churches and families through death or illness, or re-location that we mourn, but ministry continues in the village of Kilbride and people are faithful to travel the roads from various places to be with us and join or lead us (in the case of the choir) in worship. It has been rewarding to attend your Senior’s dinners, your Migrant Workers ministry, your Share the Spirit breakfast and begin to be acquainted with the larger community. It is evident that our ministry in Kilbride is not limited to behind the walls of the church, but has a presence and witness in the greater community. You have engaged and committed leadership with an understanding of mission that will enable you to maintain these important ministries. As we enter into the New Year, we know that God goes before us and with us. We know that we need not fear the challenges ahead. Church Membership:

migrant worker events were successes again. Sharon and her helpers continue to attract a large number of local farm workers with combination of great shopping, fun games, an appetizing meal and wonderful entertainment. It’s an evening that shouldn’t be missed.

In the fall a group in the community put together a Kilbride History ight. Judging by the large crowd many people in the community have strong interest in local history. Hopeful this could lead to other community events where other common interests are presented/discussed.

The holiday season is always a busy time at the church. The annual “Share the Spirit” pancake breakfast saw a good turnout of people who contributed money, food and Christmas presents to the Wesley Christmas store. A special thanks to the Kilbride Public School who also collected items for the store. Several members of Kilbride United Church delivered the items and volunteered at the Wesley no-charge Christmas store which is always a rewarding experience

We had another very successful year hosting the monthly Senior’s Luncheons. Attendance was wonderful and these events were lots of fun and continued to be supported by a great group of volunteers, coordinated by Monique Gagnon.

This year a group of parents from Kilbride School approach the church about hosting a Candlelight

Caroling evening through the village. It was great to see the church filled young children and their families.

The Christmas Eve Service is looked forward to by many in the community. This year did not disappoint with its usual large attendance

2016 started out on a very positive note with the arrival of Elnabrees Syrian Refugee family. Westdale, Nelson, Lowville, Carlisle, Kilbride Lynden and Rock Chapel United Churches joined together in the effort to bring 19 members of the extended family together in Canada. Everyone in the congregation was so excited and proud to be able to help this refugee family that has experienced so much hardship over the years.

Our new website (kilbrideunited.com) was up and running by the end of January. The website has a blog on the home page with announcements of events happening in the church and community as well as the surrounding area. Other pages provide useful and interesting information to site visitors. Our new Facebook page has attracted a loyal following with its stories of community interest.

A video display was added to main meeting room. It can be used for presentations, workshops, slideshows, and movies.

The annual fertilizer fund raising campaign generated twice as much revenue as the previous year. This was due to the greater advertising effort and the issuing of charitable tax receipts for the profit portion.

In the summer a number of members of the pastoral charge rented a bus to take themselves and members of the Elnabrees refugee family on trip to iagara Falls. We toured the falls area and the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory before going to the Historic Queenston Heights Park for a picnic. It was a fun day for all and a great opportunity to spend with Elnabrees family.

2016 Board Members Kilbride, north Burlington collection. Westfield Herit-age Village sent along one of their interpreters (in peri-od dress) from Dr. Beattie’s Drug Store that originally stood on Kilbride Street. We also appreciated having two student volunteers helping with the refreshments.

A big thank you to all those who volunteered their time tidying up the church, providing refreshments and help-ing out that evening.

Many donations were made by the attendees and after expenses, the remainder of $500 was donated to the church. If anyone is interested in having any other events or talks or if you have any information or photos of Kilbride’s history, please don’t hesitate to contact me a 905-659-1947 or [email protected] .

Kilbride History Night Helen Callaway

In early September, the staff of Kilbride Public Library planted a seed about the possibility of having community talks and events in the library. That seed grew to become the 2nd Kilbride History Night. Sharon Ellis, Lois LaSalle, Tina Ditoro and I worked to bring the communi-ty together to learn about the history of our village of Kil-bride, reconnect with neighbours and friends, and meet new neighbours while enjoying refreshments and histori-cal displays.

The event was held on November 15th. We were grateful that we were able to use our own historic church for the venue as about 130 people were in attendance. The films Coxe’s Creek and Education for the Back Concessions were screened. Barry and Sue Dougherty introduced the films and told us a little about Dr. Leslie and Mary Meza-ros, who produced the films. They also brought a number of interesting items with them to share with the attendees.

Volunteers from the Burlington Historical Society partici-pated by hosting a table covered with items from their

port especially our organist Christina.

Early in 2016 our church website (kilbrideunited.com) was rebuilt with a number of new pages added and updated regu-larly. A Kilbride United Church Facebook page was also cre-ated and updated with stories of interest to the church com-munity. We have attracted a significant number of visitors to the website from around the world as shown in the website usage reports in next column.

The Kilbride church has a long-standing tradition of reaching out to seniors. Some time ago, late 80’s or ear-ly 90’s, Lois La Salle and Sherry Zulack had a vision to start up a luncheon for our local seniors. Both, Lois and Sherry were working full time and thus, would prepare soup and sandwichs, and set up tables the evening be-fore the luncheon. Donnie and Blanche Coulson would then step in, the day of the luncheon, to serve and clean up. Lois’ husband, Ron, delivered take outs to those unable to attend, but whom appreciated a hot meal and a familiar face. A real team effort!

The Christmas luncheon is believed to have been started by the UCW, and at some point fell into the hands of the choir members. Years later, the responsibilities of the Christmas luncheon was handed over to the year round luncheon volunteers.

I’m happy to report that the vision and team effort that began it all, some 30 years ago, still lives on. This is attributed to the commitment of many others, whom shared the same vision or belief in the importance of this outreach. Although the details of the 30 year time line is a little ‘foggy’, it’s been fun reminiscing and I encourage anyone who can shed some light on this mat-ter, to do so.

Outreach Report Sharon Banks

What a blessing that our community outreach to our “friends from away” continues to bring such joy to so many. Our numbers are growing...our store overflows ...our volunteers welcome new volunteers each time. We were thrilled to welcome the bus load of the Hamilton Youth Student Orches-tra to our June party. Their drumming sound echoed thro’ the village bringing many of our neighbours to our beautiful summer’s evening in our yard behind the Church. A special moment happened during our “farewell for the season” when each of us had an opportunity to light a candle to honour the two men..Jesus was killed... Andreas was severely injured in a traffic accident in the summer. Question? Is it time to consider another evening earlier in the year? Many of our friends are already here by late March or early April working in the greenhouses preparing all our flowers and vegetables that we rush to purchase in May and June. Just a thought... more later.
