FRUGAL BOOK MARK IDEA... You know the OLD PAINT CHIP CARDS you used when you were trying to decide what color to paint? They can be turned into great book marks (gift tags too)...Put a hole in them with a hole puncher, string ribbon through them! You now have great book marks! Tip: Add paint cards to your "Parent Wish List"!

RECYCLED PACKAGE BOOKMARKS

This simple project comes from http://

myplumpudding.blogspot.com/2009/03/cereal-box-

bookmarks.html --it saves books from dog ears and

recycles cardboard from the trash!

1. Simply pull out your colorful cardboard pack-

ages, flatten them out and cut them into strips about

1 1/2" x 6". A paper cutter will give you a more con-

sistent cut. And any size strip will do--as long as it

fits in your book.

2. Trim corners with a corner rounding tool, scis-

sors or an X-acto.

3. Punch a hole in the top and thread it with a

matching ribbon. *****

By Keegan H. Every Monday and Wednesday, for two weeks in the latter part of October and first week of November, the 2nd graders in our Clarkston School District, went to the Asotin County Family Aquatic Center for swimming lessons! Yes! And you ask, “Where did the money come from to let all those kids swim?” The money came from USA

swimming grant. It was specifically for 2nd graders! The 4 Elementary schools in the Clarkston School Dis-trict which where Grantham, Parkway, Highland, and Heights got to do this very fun thing called swimming lessons! “The Grantham second grade kids did awesome!” said P.E. teacher, Mrs. Ledgerwood said. Our kids had a blast swimming. Certified swimming instructors helped teach the swimming lessons. Mrs. Ledg-erwood had a lot of fun except on the last day when they jumped in on her! About 200 kids participated in this event. I think this was amazing & sounds like they had a lot fun! Almost made me want to do 2nd grade again!!! Nah!! But thanks USA Swimming for giving the kids the opportunity to have swim lessons!

Harry Potter Book Author: J.K. Rowling

Hi, my name is Sunshine and I am a 3rd grader. I am going to tell you a little about this book: Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows. It is the seventh and final novel of the Harry Potter series, written by British author J. K. Rowling. I have been interested in the whole series. I’ve read all the books and watched all the movies. It real grabs you! This book is mainly about the boy who lived because his mother protected him from Lord Voldemort. He has a lighting shaped scar on his forehead that Voldemort gave him. We follow Harry Potter as he attempts to bring an end to his archenemy, Lord Voldemort. The Hallows, in book this is interesting. They (the Hallows) are shaped as a triangle, a line, and a circle. The triangle means the cloak of invisibility. The line means the undefeatable wand. The circle means the death stone. There is much excite-ment in this book!

I loved this book a lot! If you have not read the Harry Potter series, I sug-gest that you should, because they are amazing stories and movies! Signing

off for now, this is your ray of Sunshine on your favorite books! SS

Grinovations at Grantham Brought to you by

Community News Gals Karmen J. & Jenna F.

For this article, we have decided to write about the Grino-vations Bus. It’s also known as the smile bus. This is where kids get their teeth cleaned if you don’t have a dentist. They are really nice and when you are done you get a treat bag for being a good patient. I hope that some of you check this out. The people are really nice. They also come around to your class rooms and talk about the bus. And when you turn in the paper they give you a toothbrush. So I hope you en-joyed this article about the SMILE BUS! Make sure that you smile.

By Alina and Angela!

We are going to tell you about one of our most favorite teachers! It’s Mrs. Crystal Harris! She was 21 when she graduat-ed college with her teaching degree. She graduated from Lewis-ton Clark State College. She also has been recently married. She is currently teaching a 3rd/4th combo class. Here are a few of her favorite things! Mrs. Harris`s favorite subject is reading. Her favorite song is Brown Eyed Girl. Mrs. Har-ris has 3 pets: 1 gold fish, 1pug dog, and 1 chubby dog. Her favorite one is the pug. She has a favorite color and it is green. And of course her favorite job is teaching! Mrs. Harris is a good teacher. She is nice, funny, and safe. She waits for everyone to be quite before talking. Also, she always helps everyone who needs help. She always really likes to help the 3rd graders the best because they are much quieter. Some of the third graders are from Mrs. Heath’s class too. And Mrs. Harris is just a real sweet person. She is in a new classroom this year but last year. She was an assistant Ti-tle I teacher. She is wonderful to everyone in this school. We think she is the best of teachers that we know. She teaches us the greatest things like math, CIA, and art on Fridays! So whenever you see Mrs. Harris give her a hug, because we all can use a hug and she really deserves it!

The DECA Awards!

By Sydney A.

Once again the 4th graders in our dis-trict worked on a plan that helped them develop their sense of Entrepreneurship. Yeah, that is a long word! But main idea is to figure out all the ins and outs of how to start and run a business! Here are some pictures from the big assembly at CHS with the DECA high school students!

This month at Grantham we are learning about the character trait called Responsibility! Big kid definition - Trustworthy, accountable; having or involving important duties. Little kid definition - Doing the right thing whether or not someone tells you to. We went around on the playground and asked a couple kids & adults what responsibility is to them and these are their responses! Kaiden: Being nice to people. Bobby: Taking care of other things. Holly: Understanding our mistakes. Nevaeh: To do your job. Braden: Taking your mistake. Amia: Making sure not to fight. Landon: Watching yourself. Natalie: Admitting your mistake. Mrs. Layes: Cleaning out the cat box even if it is not your favorite chore. Just do it! Zoe: Taking care of yourself. Miss VanLeuven: Get things done! We hope you learned something from this article!

Below are a few helps for you to remember what RESPONSIBILITY is all about!

21stCentury & REACH by M. Angelis G-R.

The research center from Richland, WA came to Clarkston to

work with our 21st Century Program kids. There were three dif-

ferent learning stations centered on the Columbia River. Fal-

lowing program, families were welcome to join us for dinner

from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, where the students

showed what they learned to their families.

Our three activities were: Trout

Life Cycle, Animals of the Riparian

Fur and Tracks, and Trout Physiolo-

gy. We were very excited about this

amazing learning opportunity! They

were fun workshops! These pictures

are from the event!

Character Traits – Responsibility By Anna P. & Zoee R.

When you agree to do something, do it. If you let people down, they'll stop believing you. When you follow through on your commitments, people take you seriously.

Answer for your own actions. Don't make excuses or blame others for what you do. When you take responsi-bility for your actions you are saying "I am the one who's in charge of my life."

Take care of your own matters. Don't rely on adults to remind you when you're supposed to be somewhere or what you're supposed to bring. You take the responsibility.

Be trustworthy. If somebody trusts you to borrow or take care of something, take care of it. If somebody tells you something in confidence, keep it to yourself. It's important for people to know they can count on you.

Always use your head. Think things through and use good judgment. When you use your head you make bet-ter choices. That shows your parents they can trust you.

Don't put things off. When you have a job to do, do it. Doing things on time helps you take control of your life and shows that you can manage your own affairs. http://www.goodcharacter.com/YCC/BeingResponsible.html

Hi, my name is Manuel and I’m not a big fan of basketball but I will tell you there are some people that do like basketball! Jenna F. here at our school is a fan. Her favorite team is Gonzaga. Landen A. is a fan too. One day he wants to play basketball in high school or like a pro! I once read a great story about Michael Jordan, about his pursuit to his basketball dream! The book is called: Salt in His Shoes. It’s an “Everybody” book! It is a biography of Michael Jordan by his mom and sister. Michael struggled with bullying because he was a short kid. He wanted to be taller; his mom told him to sprinkle salt in his shoes and pray! After having a talk with his father, Michael understood that being a good bas-

ketball player did not come form his height but it cam from his hard work and “GRIT”. His dad told him, “Being taller may help you play a little better, but not as much as practice, de-termination, and giving your best will.” Michael did not lose hope; he kept practicing before he went to play at the park again. Michael Jordan is still one of the best basketball players in history. He has come a long way because of hard work. This story is inspiring and important to any kid who wants to better him or herself; it gives them hope and encourages them to work hard. The story's’ illustrator drew some amazing pictures! Do you have GRIT like Michael Jordan? This is MH, I’m out!

Mischa Mauhar By: Kaitlyn C

Today I am going to tell you

about Mischa Mauhar. She is 6

years old, in 2nd

grade in Mrs.

Nedrow’s class, and loves to eat

tater-tot casserole when mom makes it for us. OH! Did I

mention that Mischa and I are sisters! Her favorite animal

is a bunny and we used to have one but, it was eaten by

an eagle. She likes to do gymnastics and she is in dance. Her first dance recital was

on November 21 and she did great! She practices every Tuesday and sometimes in

her room. She loves to listen to music and dance with our little sister Peyton. Some-

times they get into arguments but that always happens to sibling’s right? If it does

not happen, then that must be awesome but it happens to us. Mischa’s favorite color

is purple or pink. She likes the Seahawks. I think everyone knows who they are, but if

you don’t, they are a NFL football team that just recently won a Super Bowl. That

was awesome! Now you know a little bit about Mischa but, there’s more, so stick

around if you want to know more. Mischa has long blond hair and likes to dress up

on the weekends and have fashion shows with Peyton and me. I am the judge and

Peyton, Mischa are the models. They also like to play school at home after dinner.

Mischa’s lucky number is 7 and 13. Don’t ask me why, it just is. Hope enjoyed getting

to know about your fellow student, Mischa! This is Katie, signing off for now! Bye!
