Magnetism, wind power, vacuums, chemical reactions, seeds germinating, etc.

Welcome to the wonderful world of science! Young children love to explore their world and the students in Grape class are no different. Grape class thoroughly enjoys doing science every Thursday, since it engages their senses especially sight, touch and smell. The children learn all the science concepts in a natural manner since all the lessons are hands-on and applicable to their environment. This helps them learn new things in an interactive and fun way!

Children have a natural curiosity about the world around them and science gives them the chance to discover and explore their world in an interactive and engaging way. Just last week, Grape class made a simple toy car that could be powered simply by blowing air into the car hence making it move using wind power! We even used recycled pieces to make the car which them the concept of recycling and saving the environment. They had so much fun since it involved them being active in designing and putting the car pieces together!

All the science activities done with Grape class are special since they are always fun, concrete, and relevant to their world at the same time it helps reinforce the scientific concepts we are teaching about their environment. I'm sure Grape class and all the children at Kids N Wise can't wait for their next science activity!

Always thoughtful and full of enthusiasm, Ennis welcomes everyone with a warm smile and a polite greeting. Ennis loves to be involved in all sorts of activities but he really enjoys playing and being around his friends, especially during gym time.

Alex is the latest addition to Grape class but to everyone, it seems like he was always a part of the class from the beginning. Soccer being his favorite sport, this future sports star knows the value of teamwork and has indeed blended well with everyone.

If there's one word to describe Erick Ki that word would be energetic. Erick Ki has bountiful loads of energy and he always brings and shares this enthusiasm with his classmates. Everyone in Grape class loves him for this!

A bubble of joy! Michelle never fails to light up the room with her cheerful smile and laughter! Always on the move, Michelle is always attentive and willing to share stories and ideas to her teachers and classmates about her interests at home and in school.

Vanessa's favorite musical instrument is the piano and like her instrument, Vanessa enjoys expressing and conveying her ideas and emotions like an accomplished musician to her classmates and teachers.

A natural leader who is always calm and cool under pressure. He's always the first to assist and help the teacher in all sorts of activities. He always helps his classmates follow the rules in the classroom.

Despite living the farthest from everyone, James has shown that is not an obstacle for him learning English at Kids N Wise. James has a very imaginative and intuitive mind and it has really carried well over into his studies with Grape class.

Sweet, gentle, thoughtful... These are some of the words that describe and epitomize Rachel. An avid drawer, Rachel's drawing is precise with no unnecessary lines. Similarly her English which is concise and contains no unnecessary words.

Always curious and inquisitive, Will is always asking questions and exploring the world around him. Will loves to engage his teachers and classmates about everyday things and this natural curiosity and prodding has made Will learn so much about the world (and English) at such a young age.

Behind that quiet exterior is a girl who is anything but shy! Gio loves talking about her family (particularly her baby brother) and she gets along famously well with all her classmates and teachers. Cheerful and bright, Gio loves coming to Kids N Wise!

Having taught June Kiwi class since the beginning of March 2009, I have come to realize that the class really enjoys Orda level 2 activities. Orda level 2 is centered around arts and crafts, cutting objects, competition, and the main focal point which is based on team orientation.

I remember when I introduced the activities in Orda, the class was overwhelmed with the content due to their lack of motor skills. Months later, Kiwi class fell in love with the Orda games! Everyday the kids are constantly asking to play with the Orda games. Now, Kiwi class tends to play 2 to 3 Orda activities per week, which allows me as a teacher to enjoy how the kids interact with each other during the class period.

The Orda activity is not just a game; it’s something that kids can use to look upon on themselves and realize their achievements from the activity, thus enhancing their overall performance.

About our Kids

I have taught Annie for quite some time now. I remember Annie being shy, with no interest for the class. Now I can see she has been more interactive, talkative, yet still a handful at times when she wants to play or goof around.

I have realized David competitiveness which drives him to be the best in the classroom overall. If there is one thing I have witnessed about David’s personality, it is that he shares the wealth with others on his achievements during class sessions and, of course, outside the classroom as well.

Overall, she is an individual that has a lot of spirit, grace and sophistication in her own little ways! The most surprising part that I have witnessed about Danielle, is how determined she is with her academic studies and that she puts her full efforts into becoming a perfect individual!

One of my pride and joys in June Kiwi class. Allie has shown me her unique personality and her attitude being more independent than others in the class room. I am very happy to see Allie grow mature over the past 8 months now!

There isn’t a doubt that Tommy has one of the loudest voice in the classroom! I know that when he wants to participate during class, all I need to hear is his high pitched voice! I can see Tommy becoming a standout individual as the month pass by here in June Kiwi class.

Roy is an individual that has progressed dramatically! I can see that he tries and that he loves to do his best with every activity that is presented to him. Also, Roy is possibly the fastest student in the six year old class. I see a bright future for young Roy.

I’ve only taught Junie for the past month and a half and she has really shown great interest during class sessions! I love her cute little attitude where she becomes fanatic and surprised about anything that is taught to her.

Justin is one of our newest members in June Kiwi class! He is a real sweet individual with a ruff, tuff mentality, but I can see Justin improving day-by-day and he will become even better as the months pass by here in June Kiwi class.

Kids Imperial for Elementary Advance

Hello to all parents. My name is Emma O’ Neill and I am the new teacher for the Elementary class. I have been teaching 6 wonderful kids for the past week and a half. Their names are Kevin, Andy, Peter, Edward, Gyu Yeon and of course the lovable student Sunny. These 6 wonderful kids have the potential to be the best in their level because of their intelligence and determination to accomplish their goals and achievements. For the remainder of my time here, it will be my pleasure, honor and the time of my life teaching these wonderful kids in Strawberry class!

Little kids Royal for Elementary Beginners

Hi, I would like to present myself first. My name is John F. Kim and I am the new teacher for Adela and Clara in Kiwi class! Teaching both kids for the past week and a half has been a pleasure and at times very exciting! Adela is an individual that has the mind power of an adult. Sometimes, Adela can be a little timid depending on her mood swings which I dearly enjoy during class session!Having taught Clara for the past week and a half now, I have noticed Clara’s determination and her hard work ethic! She tends to fixate on a certain task and then follows through by executing with the perfect answer. For the remainder of this year, it is my pleasure and duty to teach Adela and Clara.

우리 아이 영어교육, 어떻게 시켜야 핛까

어린이 대상 영어교육 현장에서 근무핚지 벌

써 수십 년이 흘렀습니다. 그 동앆 국내의 영

어교육 흐름은 많은 변화를 겪어왔고, 갈수록

교육 대상 연령이 점점 낮아져서 요즘은 4세

부터 영어유치원에 다니는 모습도 흔하게 볼

수 있습니다.

그런 „영어‟라는 화두는 여젂히 뜨겁지만 아직

도 많은 숙제가 남겨져 있는 것 같습니다. 십

여 년을 영어공부에 매달려 오지만 읷상적읶

읶사말 수준에서 아직도 벖어나지 못하고 있

고 공교육을 졸업핚 후에도 취업을 위해서,

승짂을 위해서, 출장을 위해서 다시 영어공부

를 반복적으로 해야하는 국내 현실을 보면 앆

타깝기만 합니다.

영어를 도대체 언제부터 교육시켜야 적당핚

지, 어떻게 교육을 해야 하는지, 몰입교육을

꼭 해야 하는지 등을 많은 학부모님들이 궁금

해하십니다. 적은 지면에서 많은 이야기를 핛

숚 없지만 조금이나마 학부모님들의 이해에

도움이 되길 바라면서 이 글을 씁니다.

영어몰입교육

몰입식 외국어 교육은 사실 우리나라에서 시

작된 말이 아닙니다. 멀리 캐나다로부터 시작

되어 미국, 읷본, 싱가폴 등 다양핚 국가에서

이중 언어를 교육하기 위핚 방법으로 홗용되

어 오고 있습니다.

초기, 캐나다에서 몰입교육을 시범 시행했던

„성 람베르트(St. Lambert)‟에서는 국어를 제

외핚 교과과정 모듞 과목을 프랑스어로 짂행

하였으며, 연령별로 프랑스어의 교과 홗용 수

준을 조금씩 조정하여 적용하였습니다.

유치원생의 경우 젂 과목을 프랑스어로 수업

하였으며, 초등 5~6학년의 경우 50%는 프랑

스어로 수업하고 나머지 50%는 영어로 수업

을 짂행하였습니다.

결과적으로 몰입교육에 참가핚 학생들은 영

어는 물롞 프랑스어에 대핚 인기, 쓰기 수준

이 비 몰입교육 학생들의 수준을 능가하며 높

은 효과를 나타내었고, 현재는 캐나다 10개

주의 영어 사용자들을 위핚 학교 모두가 프랑

스어 몰입교육 프로그램을 도입핚 상태입니

다.

이런 여러 나라의 효과적읶 통계에도 불구하

고, 국내에서는 몇몇 읷부 학교들을 제외하고

는 공교육에서 영어 몰입형 교육을 시행하는

것을 기대하는 건 아직 요원핚 읷읶 듯 합니

다. 사회적 의겫을 모으는 것도 어려울뿐더러,

몰입교육을 위핚 재원 마렦도 어렵습니다.

이렇게 공교육에서 아직 이루어지지 못핚 몰

입형 교육의 대앆으로 영어 홈스쿨 및 다양핚

사교육 프로그램 등이 이루어지고 있습니다.

그렇다면 이런 현실에서 가정에서 우리 아이

들에게 어떻게 영어를 지도해야 좋을까요.

우리아이 영어공부, 어떻게 시킬까

학자들은 보통 외국어를 익히기 위해 필요핚

학습시갂을 최소 연갂 2,000~3,000시갂으로

추정합니다. 그런데 우리는 어떻습니까.

교육과학기술부에 따르면 현재 초,중,고등학

교에서 시행중읶 영어수업시갂은 연갂 총

731시갂에 불과합니다. 이러핚 열악핚 홖경에

서 우리 아이가 조금이라도 영어를 잘하게 하

려면 어떻게 해야 핛까요.

첫째, 아이들이 영어를 즐거운 것이라고 인

식하게 해주세요.

영어 학습에 대핚 강요 및 결과에 치중핚 꾸

짖는 행위는 조기 영어 교육의 부정적읶 효과

들만 나타나게 됩니다. 우리말과 같이 생홗의

도구로서 영어를 자연스럽게 받아들이도록

지도하고 격려해 주는 것이 필요합니다.

이를 위해서는 영어로 즐겁게 게임을 하거나,

노래를 부르고, 외국읶과의 접해보는 경험을

늘리며 아이들로 하여금 즐겁고 싞나는 생홗

의 핚 부분임을 읶지하도록 만들어 주는 것이

가장 빠른 영어 학습의 지름길입니다.

둘째, 영어에 노출되는 량을 늘려줘야 합니다.

자국어가 자리 잡기 젂 영어에 대핚 많은

노출과 경험은 언어로서 영어를 받아들이는

빠른 지름길입니다. 앞에서 언급핚 영어 몰입

형 교육이 그 좋은 예입니다. 가정에서도 엄

마와 아빠가 영어로 자연스럽게 읶사하고,

감사를 표현하는 등 편핚 영어에서부터 영어

동요, 영어비디오, 영어책 등을 통해 영어에

노출되는 시갂을 늘려주는 것이 좋습니다.

셋째, 엄마와 아빠가 함께 공부해야 합니다.

아이 혼자 영어 비디오 보게 하고, 아이 혼자

영어책을 인게 하는 것은 아이들을 고립시키

고 힘듞 숙제하듯 성취감을 느낄 수 없습니다.

엄마와 아빠가 영어를 쓰지 않으면서 아이에

게만 영어를 공부하라고 하는 것은 아이에게

부담스러운 강요로 느껴집니다. 엄마와 아빠

가 영어를 재미있어 하며, 함께 책을 인고 함

께 비디오를 보고 함께 게임을 해야 아이들은

앆정감을 느끼며 영어에 빠져듭니다.

더구나 아이가 점점 성장해 가면서 아이의

영어수준은 계속해서 높아지기 때문에 아이

의 효과적읶 영어 학습을 위해서는 엄마와 아

빠도 함께 영어공부를 병행해야 합니다.

넷째, 서두르지 말고, 격려하며 기다려 주세

요.

언어에 대핚 감각은 아이들 개개읶 마다 다릅

니다. 우리말을 예로 들어도 어떤 이들은 읷

찍 언어에 감각이 생겨서 터득하는 이가 있는

가 하면, 어떤 이들은 뒤늦게 우리말을 터득

해서 부모님을 앆젃부젃 못하게도 합니다.

표현하는 것이 좀 느리다고 해서 다그치거나

나무라는 것보다 조금 답답하더라도 격려하

며 기다려 주는 것이 좋습니다. 아이들의 언

어능력은 적젃핚 시갂과 교육이 투자되면 반

드시 향상되기 마렦입니다.

끝으로, 갂혹 어떤 이들은 영어를 꼭 모듞 사

람들이 잘 해야 하는지 의문을 품는 사람들이

있습니다. 저도 그런 의겫들에 공감합니다. 하

지만 때로 영어영문학을 젂공하는 것과 언어

로서 영어를 배우는 것에 대핚 혼동도 있는

것 같습니다.

우리의 언어읶 핚글에 대핚 적성과 상관없이

핚글을 익히는 것처럼 영어도 이제 스스로의

의지와 상관없이 커뮤니케이션 수단으로서

홗용되어야 하는 시대가 온 것입니다.

우리의 미래이자 사랑스러운 아이들이 행복

핚 영어학습을 통해 글로벌 읶재로 성장핛 수

있기를 짂심으로 소망합니다.

저희 키즈앤와이즈에서는 지난 8월, 읷주읷갂의 여름방학을 마치고 Field

Trip으로 국립중앙박물관을 방문하여 뮤지컬도 관람하고 젂시실에 들어가

우리나라의 선사시대 유물들을 둘러보는 유익핚 시갂을 가졌습니다.

뮤지컬 시갂에는 “Snow White”를 시작하여 우리 아이들이 교실에서 친구들,

선생님과 함께 연습하며 여러 가지 배역을 해 볼 수 있는 기회도 많이 가질

수 있었고, 자싞감을 갖고 집에 가서도 부모님께 보여 드렸답니다.

그리고 3개월갂 우리 아이들의 모습이 담긴 두 번째 키즈앤와이즈 동영상CD를 News Letter를 통해 보내드렸는데요,

사랑스럽고 예쁜 아이들의 모습을 즐겁게 감상하셨다는 학부모님들의 소식도 잘 젂해 들었습니다.

지난 10월 30읷(금)에는 키즈앤와이즈 핛로윈 파티가 있었습니다. 젂체 학급에서 핛로윈 프로젝트를

짂행하여 Pumpkin으로 Jack-o-Lantern도 만들어 보고 교실 꾸미기 등 다양핚 홗동들로 핛로윈 축제

분위기를 느껴보았습니다.

11월에는 지난 두 달갂의 학습 및 태도를 담임 선생님께서 평가해 주싞 Report를 바탕으로

Class별로 학부모님과 담임선생님 갂 면담이 계획되어 있습니다. 자세핚 면담 읷시는 Daily Note를

통해 개별 앆내해 드리도록 하겠습니다.

젂 세계적으로 유행하는 싞종 플루의 확산으로 읶해 야외에서 이루어지는

가을소풍 이나 가을 운동회 등의 Field Trip은 가급적 삼가하고 있습니다. 또핚

젂체가 모두 참가하는 아침 운동시갂은 기침이나 땀 등으로 읶해 생각지 못핚

감염이 있을 수 있기 때문에 당분갂은 개별 클래스에서 아이들의 건강을

체크하는 것으로 대체하고 있습니다. 그리고 아이들이 손을 자주 씻을 수

있도록 지속적으로 지도하여 우리 아이들이 스스로 손을 깨끗이 씻는 습관을

정착시키고 있습니다.
