Orange Class Child Introductions

CLARAClara has a big personality in a tiny body. She loves to sing and dance to entertain her classmates and her teachers, and she really gets involved in her English lessons.

ERINErin is the newest addition to Orange class, but in a few short weeks she has already established herself in class. She enjoys talking to and playing with her new friends, and loves to make the teachers laugh with silly faces and goofy noises.

KELLYKelly is the comedian of the class.

Even as a beginner with the Englishlanguage, she has a great sense of

humor and loves to make jokes. In addition to being funny, she is

very sweet and loving.

ERICEric has a quiet, understated nature,

but he has lots of friends and loves to participate in our English lessons.

He especially enjoys bringing his toys to school and showing them off on Tuesdays

for show and tell.

BELLABella loves helping out the teachers during class and she gets very excited about learning new English words and phrases. She particularly loves performing experiments and doing projects in science class.

MICHAELMichael really cares for his classmates and loves to help them and share things with them. He is very inquisitive and curious, and is always asking about English words he doesn’t know. He is very active and loves to play with his classmates in the gym.

HELENHelen is a very mature and considerate

little girl. She loves to take care ofthe younger students and is a very quicklearner. She always has something neat

to bring and talk about duringshow and tell.

ANDYAndy started off the school year very shy

and timid and has evolved into a childthat loves to speak English and converse

with his friends. He really enjoys showingeveryone just how quickly he can read words

during phonics class.

MAYAMaya is soft spoken and affectionate. Despite being quiet, she really loves to participate in class. She always wants to be the one with the correct answer, and she was the first student to win a reward for completing her sticker reward sheet.

YOUNGYoung is sweet and intelligent. He has a beaming smile that he loves to display when he gets a right answer. He loves to play Orda games and watch English animations.

About Our English Class

I n March, Orange class had their first day of school at MBC Kids n Wise.

They are a first year class, so their knowledge of the English language was

very limited or completely nonexistent. The amount of progress I have

seen in five short months has been amazing.

The same class that didn’t understand what “sit down” or “be quiet” meant

now loves to come in on Monday mornings and tell me what they did

over the weekend. We started with Let’s Go Let’s Begin and Smart Phonics

1 and we’re now on Happy House 2 and Smart Phonics 2.

The students have shocked me with their effortless ability to learn from

these books.

They have completed Smart Phonics 1, which taught the basic sounds of

the alphabet, and are now reading words and short stories in Smart

Phonics 2. They can read most small words I put on the board and often

times surprise me with their abilities to sound out longer words.

Their speaking and listening skills have already exceeded what I had

initially hoped to accomplish with them in a year. I am very proud of

Orange class and the remarkable accomplishments they have made, and

I look forward to seeing just how far this class goes.

Show and Tell

About a month ago, Orange class began doing show and tell once a week.

The concept is simple: the students bring in anything they want and they

tell the class about it. The students have brought in everything from toys

to birth certificates.

The results I have seen from doing this activity have been incredible.

show and tell is a basic introduction into public speaking.

The week the activity was introduced to the class, the students were

a little nervous. As the weeks have gone on, I have been pleased to see

the students approaching the front of the room with much more confidence. They no longer deal with stage

fright and are comfortable with speaking in front of their peers. Confidence is a very important key in

developing new language skills. As their confidence in speaking in front of the class has grown, so has their

ability to tell everyone about their belongings. Since starting Show and Tell their ability to tell everyone about

their belongings has grown.

show and tell has been a great way to help the kids improve their English without them even realizing that

they’re learning.

About our Kids

Well, I guess we can begin by briefly describing them. Those who claim that humor doesn’t translate from one language into another has obviously never met our Alex Kim! Alex regularly

regales us with his razor-sharp wit and funny observations – all in English!

Then we have our future astronaut, Andy. With his gentle nature, cute looks and stunning intellect our Andy has been known to

attract female admirers of all ages (even teachers!).

But it ‘s our beautiful Yoonsuh who has managed to capture his heart – within mere days of arriving in Strawberry Class! With a winning combination of looks, charm and intellect

(not to mention the world’s largest collection of princess dresses) it’s not hard to see why!

Reina is the hug magnet of the class. She is equally popular with both boys and girls and EVERYONE wants her on their team for

both gym class and for more academic activities.

Any teacher who is lucky enough teach the next Picasso must learn to develop a thick skin – especially when 6-year-old Alex Cha comes up to the board, corrects my frog drawing and tells me

in English that I forgot to draw “webbed feet”! Wow!

Julie is our class princess. With her excellent behavior, sweet nature, and fantastic speaking skills she effortlessly controls the whole room while appearing not to notice it!

We may have a future Korean president on our hands!

Newcomer Brian is the cool dude that everyone wants to be best friends with! He is insanely smart, adorably cute, loves to learn, and

is great friends with Optimus Prime (The leader of the good transformers)!

Strawberry Class also has a secret agent – called Jessica! Jessica started the year as an extremely shy girl but in five short months h

as managed to transform into the most confident, talkative and charismatic girl ever! She is a true leader! As you can probably guess, with a class like this, every day is an exciting adventure!

Being Strawberry Class teacher is the best job in the world! I am constantly amazed

by how much our Students know and the speed at which they learn. The emphasis in

our classroom is not on the number of books completed but rather on facilitating

the students to acquire language as naturally as possible. We don’t just want our

students to learn vocabulary – we want them to know how to use it correctly in a full

sentences. And without it being hard work! After all, being six years of age they are

still learning Korean everyday.

Why should English be any harder? I was recently blown away by just how much my students have learned. We had

just finished our “Happy House” course book and had started on “ Let’s Go”. To my pleasant surprise my students just

sailed through the vocabulary pages, effortlessly using full sentences without even being asked! Amazing!

ScienceAt MBC Kids N Wise, we know that kids learn most effectively when they are having fun! When class is boring it takes so much effort to learn. But when students are enjoying themselves they learn without even realizing it! To this end, we have tried to make our classes as active and interactive as possible. Especially when it comes to science, a firm favorite with Strawberry Class students. We have completed many exciting projects from making lemon soda (using baking soda for carbonation), to making lava lamps, to making slime!!! As you can probably guess the messiest projects are usually the most fun! Our aim is to encourage students to learn using as many senses as possible. Science provides a great opportunity to explore and learn through the five senses, especially the senses of taste, smell and touch which are all too often ignored in a regular classroom setting. We also have another aim in mind when it comes to science – we like to teach our kids to be as independent and self-reliant as possible. Recently, when our classroom clay dried up we had an idea. Instead of buying more clay we opted to teach the kids how to make their own play dough! It was an enormous (and messy) success!!! The play dough was awesome but even better was the sense of accomplishment that each student had. They even took some home so they could show their families! It is really an honor to teach such amazing students.

Conclusion (Love)Everyday I am inspired by their love of learning, their sense of fun and most of all by their growing friendships with each other. Seeing each of them bloom over time not just on an academic level but on a personal and social level too, is indescribably rewarding. Like I said earlier, this really is the best job in the world!
