We are busy gearing up for our annual Cops 4 Kids Day! The event will be held on Friday, May 8th from 4-6pm, at the Boys & Girls Club once again. The event is free and open to the public. We anticipate hundreds of Boys & Girls Club members and kids from all the City ele-mentary schools to attend.
Cops 4 Kids Day is an opportunity for police to get to know kids in the commu-nities that they serve while they are off duty. And kids get to learn how to inter-act and be comfortable with police while understanding their importance within our community. At the event, the De-partment will show off its K-9, motorcy-cle and SWAT teams, explain how the Forensics Unit looks for clues, talk about
bike safety, and generally make itself available to the kids.
Officers will run through a bouncy house with the kids, do the limbo, shoot Nerf guns, dance, ride bikes, play corn-hole, play in a teen basketball tourna-ment, and eat with them; all while they are breaking down barriers that often exist between young people in this area and the police.

The CPF supports the CPD in many ways, and one of the
most important is in funding supplemental training to help
our police officers be able to do their job safely and effec‐
vely.
This June, the CPF will be sponsoring a training class for
officers en tled “Enhanced Communica on Skills for To-
day’s Law Enforcement Officer.” In this class, officers will
work on strategies for “de‐escala on” ‐ which said another
way, will help officers reduce the need to use physical force
or weapons when faced with tense encounters.
The increased service demands and scru ny placed upon
public safety professionals have resulted in a growing need
to master verbal conflict management skills. When nega ve
verbal encounters escalate to the point where physical inter‐
ven on is used by police, cri cism o en abounds, especially
if it is later discovered that there is li le evidence of verbal
de‐escala on techniques employed by officers. This is par c‐
ularly true when incident video and audio reviews are u ‐
lized. In some cases, the verbal ac ons of the public safety
responders actually served to escalate the situa on. Admin‐
istrators are now asking, have we adequately trained our personnel to successfully manage and respond to
verbal confronta ons in a professional manner?
Re red Chief of Police of Raleigh, NC, Harry P. Dolan, will be bringing this important 2‐day
course to our Department. Course objec ve include:
Improve officers’ verbal communica ons skills
Diffuse poten ally vola le verbal encounters
Learn proven verbal abuse deflec on and redirec on techniques
Develop techniques to help safeguard team members’ emo onal and professional well‐being

Here’s what else is going on at the CPF:
Ran a Community Leadership Police Academy for Charlo esville City Council members, neighborhood as‐socia on presidents, and local members of the press. A endees got an insiders look into the Department over two evenings of classes.
Welcomed 6 new officers to the Department with a dinner following their Academy gradua on.
Approved the funding for two $20K Housing grants for officers this year. The community, Department, and families of the officers all benefit from having the police live where they work.
Sponsored two Sergeants in con nuing educa on programs. One is currently at a Command College in Richmond while another will a end an Execu ve Leadership school in Texas this summer. The leadership and knowledge they gain from these classes benefits the en re Department.
Partnered with the Albemarle County Police Founda on to sponsor a working lunch while both Depart‐ments were receiving training on Domes c Violence.

The new CPD Gym is now open! Renova ons are complete on previously unused
space located in the basement of the CPD, and officers are now using the Strength
and Condi oning Center at all hours of the day and night. Having an on‐site gym facili‐
ty for officers to use brings many benefits to the CPD and City of Charlo esville, in‐
cluding:
Officer health and injury preven on
Job performance and reduc on in stress
Officer recruitment
Staff Reten on
The CPD received a federal grant to cover some of the cost of the
gym, ACAC generously donated equipment, and the CPF funded
the remaining cost. Here’s to the health of our City’s finest!

The CPF seeks to improve the quality of life in Charlo esville by offering a community partner for our police department. The Founda on pro‐motes excellence in police services by inves ng in programs that enhance our department and
yet are beyond the reasonable reach of the City’s budget. We reward excellence by cele‐bra ng the successes of our department and
the skills of its officers. And we strengthen the connec ons between the department and the
public through outreach programs and commu‐nity events.
