Our INSPIRATION Maggie

‘What’s for you, won’t go by you’ was a regular mantra for Maggie – who ironically was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder which affects 1 in 100,000 families worldwide. Maggie developed many additional health complications which meant she was not eligible for a transplant. Sadly, Maggie died in July 2012 after battling Familial Amyloidosis for over 10 years Maggie spent many years participating in research trials, determined to find the cure which could one day save the lives of her children and the children of her siblings. Maggie’s son Gary is committed to keeping the memory of his mother alive by raising both funds and awareness of kidney research.

In 2017 The Purple Ball will raise funds for both Kidney Research UK and the Dialysis Unit for Bute Campaign.

In September 2016 we learned about The Dialysis Unit for Bute Campaign and their goal of raising £300,000 to establish a dialysis unit on the Isle of Bute (Rothesay). If you are a renal patient living on Bute, you have to travel three times per week to either Glasgow or Greenock to receive life sustaining treatment. There is no alternative. Patients in Bute are dependent on the Ferry service and during adverse weather only cases that are deemed as an emergency are airlifted. Does this sound right to you? In 2017, in addition to supporting the work of Kidney Research UK, The Purple Ball will also be supporting the fundraising efforts of the Bute Campaign.

A massive thank you to Romy and all the Purple Bawlers White Water Rafting Team for kick starting the fundraising!
