You arrived in numbers with 750 tickets sold, you also supported sales on the night and brought a wonderful attitude to the evening!! This of course was a first for the Home and School team and it must be said that this was a great success!! They have learnt a lot through this event. The mums in the team grew this idea and they had two main goals: a great night for all, and fundraising for all students at Kamo Primary. They certainly succeeded!! I was so proud of my staff for all they did: teachers, support staff, admin staff and Mr Gow! So all in all everyone contributed to a great night!! In Team Pono we believe in, and have adopted, an explore to learn approach to our curriculum. Our aim in Pono is for our students to develop a sense of who they are and what they can do, while being challenged to explore and express themselves in and out of the classroom through play, exploration and formal learning situations. We place a huge emphasis on the Values and Key Competencies outlined in the New Zealand Curriculum and these help guide much of what we do, what we say and what we believe in. These are modelled, talked about and have become an organic part of our daily programme. As a team, we work, plan and collaborate wherever possible. Our classrooms, although single cell, are open for all students to explore throughout the day. Students are encouraged to enter these spaces, collaborate and play with others, and to learn from and with all of the teachers within Pono. We believe that it takes a village to raise a child and therefore, all have a hand in the experiences and learning that takes place for every student. Kowhai - Team Kowhai is a team of four classrooms consisting of Year 2 students. At times we may have some Year 1 students in our team. We see our team as being the bridge between an environment where students learn through exploration and a more traditionally structured classroom programme and we include aspects of both learning approaches within our practice. We have high standards and expectations of our students in the core subjects, and we know the explore to learn approach benefits our students and helps to accelerate achievement. We consult with our students as to their interests and beliefs around learning and always have them at the heart of our teaching. We have a skilled and dedicated team of teachers who constantly liaise and reflect on the best way to help our students reach their potential. We like to have fun too, and all students enjoy our Discovery Time sessions. We aim for our students to be well-rounded citizens of the future and all aspects of the curriculum are part of our daily programme. Rimu - Team Rimu is all about transition. Transitioning from a teacher-supported explore to learn approach through to a more student-led one. The Year 3 students often come in with more teacher-dependent Kowhai Team expectations and behaviours and leave as Year 4s heading off to Team Kauri where there is much more expectation around independent, student-driven learning and behaviour. We aim to be solution based and think collaboratively to find solutions to problems as they arise. Our goal has been to take our students and grow them into risk-taking, resilient students, setting them up for success in achieving their personal and academic goals. Team Rimu has ample opportunities for students to partake in a variety of activities led by all the teachers, often on a rotational basis that runs throughout the term. A shared planning style gives us the ability to reflect on which activities, strategies and approaches are working, and those that are not. Collaboration within our single cell environment is another point of difference. Team members pair up according to common teaching styles and interests and collaborate in a whole range of activities. This is where we believe we have established whanaungatanga and all Rimu students are ours, not his or hers, OURS.

… Welcome to Week 6 Term 1!

Yet another HUGE Thank you to such a great Community!! Thank you for attending the Movie Night – Flick on the Field!

Our Teams Kamo Primary is made up of four teams: Pono (Years 0 and 1), Kowhai (Year 2), Rimu (Years 3 and 4) and Kauri (Years 5 and 6). This is the feel of each team…

Pono - Team Pono is the students’ first contact at Kamo Primary School where we support students who transition into school and through their first year.

Kauri - Team Kauri is comprised of six single cell, Year 5 and 6 composite classrooms, with one of our rooms being a whanau class, which is unique to our area of the school. We have a team of teachers who are aware that we have two years to prepare our students for meeting our Year 6 Graduate Profile, while also preparing them for their next chapter in their education at intermediate school. As a result, our programmes are based on transitioning students into becoming more independent learners (where appropriate) by scaffolding their education. Our teachers become more of a facilitator, and challenge students to believe in themselves and their abilities. In Team Kauri we encourage our students to take risks and discover the type of learner and individual they are. We develop programmes and activities that support student choice and allow time each week for student-led learning where our students are the drivers of their education. We also understand the importance of learning through exploration at our level and provide opportunities for students to experience this. Planning for our students is done in a collaborative environment where the teachers in Team Kauri work together to provide experiences and opportunities informed by, and based around, student need. While each teacher has their own class of students they are responsible for, there is a belief amongst the team that all students belong to ‘us’ as Team Kauri and therefore we are all responsible for them all of the time.

Breakfast We seem to be getting an increase in students who are hungry earlier in the day as they claim that they have not had breakfast. They may be rushing out the door but research is adamant that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is known that children who eat a healthy, well-balanced breakfast are more likely to: ¥ Meet their daily nutrient requirements ¥ Concentrate better ¥ Have better problem-solving skills ¥ Have better hand-eye co-ordination ¥ Stay alert ¥ Be more creative ¥ Miss fewer days of school ¥ Be more physically active Without breakfast, our bodies don't get the jump-start they need to operate at their fullest potential throughout the day. So please, could you check that tummies are full prior to leaving home. If you don't have a child who can eat first thing in the morning then please ensure they have fruit for fruit break at around 10:00am. Otherwise it is a long time until 11:00am (morning tea) to suppress a hungry tummy, and it can also mean two hours a day of lost participation in school learning.

Netsafe Live Netsafe Live is a free event in Whangarei and there is a Parents and Whanau session on Tuesday 12th March from 6:30pm to 7:30pm where the session is working together to support young people as they navigate the online world. The event is at Whangarei Girls High School. You can register at netsafe.org.nz/the-kit/netsafe-live-whangarei/ And remember it is free! With all that is happening in today’s digital social media climate, you may find this presentation very useful.

Special Request On Friday at our Movie night a precious little person lost her Peppa Pig soft toy. This toy is so loved that mum brought her back at 9:00pm and we searched the school to try and stop the tears. Unfortunately we were not successful and are appealing to our community that if anyone found Peppa could they please return her to our school office. We tried very hard to abate tears with the story that someone picked her up so that she would not be lonely at school and have taken her home for a sleepover. Please, if she found her way to your place the little owner would be ever so happy to have her best friend back.

We thank you for your head, heart and hands, as they help build this great school!! Sally Wilson – Principal
