Traffic and circulation As we know about khan market, in current scenario it is overfilled for cars as well as for

pedestrian. There are defined paths but because of the parking problem people tend to park

their cars on roads making it difficult for people to move.

Objective of our topic was to conduct a survey in context of the site regarding the problem

faced by people coming to the khan market.

So, we conducted a survey on various areas of khan market at different times and based on

that survey we collected data.

Our area was divided in different zone such as zone 1, 2, 3, and 4,5.

On a survey conducted on Monday,

Data collected was as follows

AREA PARKING PROVISION EXISTING SCENARIO

ZONE 01 178 477

ZONE 02 60 107

METRO ROAD 48 CARS

SUBRAMANIAM 3 CAR, 11 AUTO,

BHARTI MARG 3 TWO WHEELER

PRITHVIRAJ LANE 45 CARS

ENTRY ROAD 75 CARS

CHURCH ROAD 34 + 3 CARS; 3 AUTOS

CEMETRY ROAD 4 CARS

Now as the data collected we see that at around 11 am in the daytime, parking is 50-60%

and number of cars are 150-180 occupied mostly by shopkeepers. At around 1:00 pm

occupancy is full at 120% and number of cars are 300-320, at this point of time circulation is

easy and there is no congestion. At around 4:00pm traffic load becomes heavy, as occupancy

reaches up to 180% and number of cars are 450-480, circulation becomes difficult for cars

as well as for pedestrian. At around 6:00pm parking occupancy reaches up to 200-220%

that is number of cars reaches up to 700-750 cars. Traffic load becomes heavy and

circulation is really slow. Now between 8:00-10:00 pm parking occupancy reaches up to

250-280% and number of cars reaches up to 750-800 cars and traffic load becomes

extremely heavy. When we take a look at the map the major jam is caused on ER6 as it

serves as the only exit to the market. Traffic circulation is kept to be one way to handle the

traffic load and as the traffic intensity reaches up to 280% it creates a difficult situation for

cars to get a clear way for entry as well as for exit. For the people who are coming from

metro the path, which leads to khan market, also remains congested because of the traffic

circulation.

When we talk about the traffic load on the roads, the chart below show us the traffic

intensity on the roads.

The single lane and double lane roads of area are as shown in the map

Movement of traffic is kept in a defined pattern to avoid congestion but still in current

scenario it appears to be a failure because of the glutted roads with cars.

Fire safety is also one major concern of the area as there is no area for the fire safety vehicle

to move. The market is not appropriate for the handicapped people as there are no ramps or

lifts provided.

In conclusion there is a lot of improvement and changes, which are to be done in order to

maintain easy circulation.
