Keystone State Railroad Association’s (KSRRA) mission is to provide a single trade association for all freight railroads that operate in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by advocating in a unified voice, before government and the public the interests, rights, funding needs, transportation policies and other concerns of its Railroad, Non-Operating Railroad Owners, and Associate Members. KSRRA strongly encourages economic and business growth within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

We serve freight rails’ interest before federal, state and local government, business leaders, and the public. KSRRA seeks to capitalize the Keystone State’s rich railroad history to highlight the profound economic and social transformation trains have made and continue to make in the Commonwealth.

Freight Railroads Are ExtremelyFuel Efficient

• Move a ton of freight 473 miles per gallon. • Four times more fuel efficient than trucks, on average.

• Since 1980, roughly double the freight on same amount of fuel.

Freight Railroads Reduce Highway Congestion • In 2011 alone, highway congestion cost $121 billion in wasted time (5.5 billion hours) and wasted fuel (2.9 billion gallons).

• Lost productivity, cargo delays, and other costs add tens of billions of dollars to this tab.

• Since a typical rail car replaces 3-4 trucks, railroads help relieve highway gridlock.

Snapshot: Freight Railroads in Pennsylvania

• Number of Freight Railroads 57 • Freight Railroad Miles 4,900 • Freight Railroad Employees 6,977 • Average Wages & Benefits $101,390 • Railroad Retirees 33,128
