    If youre like me, perhaps youve experienced egg days, a time of exuberance on a shoestring,

    of unlimited optimism and ideas on a very limited budget. I call those days my egg days because in the

    early months of growing my business, my family literally lived off omelets, quiches, and sandwiches

    made from the eggs we gathered from a generous neighbors hens. What we lacked in grocery budget,

    however, was made up for in joyful times together and great innovations and creativity in developing my

    business. Those egg days are among my fondest memories.

    Similarly, we know that many of you and your customers are more budget-conscious today than ever,

    Thomas Edison once said, If we all did the things

    we are capable of doing, we would literally astound

    ourselves. I believe this concept holds true for both

    organizations and individuals. At Close To My Heart,

    one of my jobs is to see possibilities, to glimpse into

    the future, to envision what more can be.

    When I joined the company last year as VicePresident of Finance and New Business

    Development, I began by looking around me to

    see what the landscape of the company already

    looked like. Where did we stand with new product

    innovations and introductions? What are our

    growth opportunities? How do we continue to

    improve? Then I began looking outward to dream

    of what else could be. What will take this amazing

    company to the next level in our market? How can

    we work hand-in-hand with you, our Consultants,

    to achieve even more?

    I take my ideas and dreams to the Close To My

    Heart teams I work with, including accounting,

    new product development, and operations to

    name a few, to get their thoughts and feedback.

    Together we chart possible courses for future

    products, expansion markets, new ways of

    interfacing with vendors here and abroad, and

    so forth. I meet with the executive team and

    present our ideas and suggestions. We discuss

    the best courses to pursue, always thinking about

    how our decisions will impact you and add to your

    success. Jeanette Lynton, founder and CEO, is

    there every step of the way, giving us her insights,

    experiences, and desires. Shes truly the ships

    captain, and the executive team members are her

    assistants and advisors.

    My background has taught me many lessons

    about persistence and never giving up. When I was

    only 12, my mother taught me how to do difficult

    things by helping me become a Fuller Brush

    salesman in my small town in Canada. It was scary

    knocking on doors of people I didnt even know

    and showing them products. But I persevered,

    learned everything I could, and ended up doing

    very well, making excellent commissions.

    In college, I had a very difficult summer job

    selling roofs door-to-door during a recession.

    Determined to succeed, I studied sales books,

    recorded and honed my presentation, learned

    to ask for referrals, and faithfully sent thank you

    notes whether I made a sale or not. Most

    importantly, I kept on trying. Soon my business

    was booming, and my friends, who were supposed

    to be selling, ended up working on crews installing

    roofs I was selling. I went back to college with my

    bank account full.

    That was 20 years ago. Since then Ive had

    the chance to close multi-million dollar sales

    transactions; start, build, and sell several

    companies; and continue to learn that hard work,

    persistence, and optimism are truly what make

    dreams come true. Now I am very excited to be

    working with Jeanette and the other executives to

    help you make your dreams come true.

    I agree with Henry Ford who said, Whether you

    believe you can do a thing or not, youre right.

    Jeff Crapos (pronounced Cra-po) responsibilities at Close To

    My Heart include finance, new business development, new

    product development, legal, and human resources. Jeff has

    had repeated success in launching profitable

    products, securing new partnerships, and

    conceiving and executing innovative

    business strategies. He is a graduate of

    Brigham Young University holding a

    bachelors and a masters degree inaccounting/information systems. Jeff

    and his wife have six children.

    Theres more to creating a great scrapbooking kit than meets the eye. Jeanette Lynton and her team of

    designers scrutinize every paper packet and kit to ensure it provides scrapbookers the ultimate in beauty

    and usability. Heres a behind-the-scenes peek at how this years National Scrapbooking Month kit,

    Miracle, came into being.

    1 InspirationIdeas emerge through inspiration, which can come

    from all kinds of sources.

    For this kit, we were inspired by everyday colors from

    our exclusive palette: Sweet Leaf and Olive greens

    from summer grass, Crystal Blue from old blue jeans,

    and Bamboo brown from the earth. Its the ultimate

    in versatility.

    2 Creative VisionAn idea gets defined and expanded as we identify

    aesthetic or instructional goals.

    We wanted to demonstrate the principles of proportion

    in a color scheme, with a neutral dominant color andearthy subdominant colors. Scrapbookers choose a

    contrasting color in their photos and make that the

    accent color as they add ink to the Irresistibles

    die-cuts, shown in Smokey Plum and Sorbet in our

    sample layouts.

    3 DesignDesigners interpret the creative vision, working

    with scrapbook artists to build a suite of products

    that caters to scrapbooking.

    We wanted to use the technique of clustering

    embellishments, so our papercrafting artists helped

    our designers create My Stickease images and

    accessories that could easily be grouped together.

    4 ProductionClose To My Heart production staff check the first

    press run of every paper to ensure the colors are

    spot-on and the quality is exceptional.

    you have time to prepare your display artwork and

    Angie Haskell, Consultant, Orem, Utah

    Angie took advantage of the color options available in each Studio J kit when

    she created this adorable Valentines Day layout. She distressed the paper using

    Chocolate and Tulip ink. She colorized the buttons and ribbons in Tulip and

    chose Blush for the ribbon slides, with a couple of Chocolate brads thrown in to

    balance it out. Angie also changed the color of her title and journaling to match

    the layoutwith lovely results!

    I had fallen behind on my scrapbooking since last fall and Studio J was a great way to

    get caught up quickly and easily! My first layout took me a little over an hour, as I had

    to learn the program and play with it. After my fifth layout, I was confident with all the

    tools and was able to finish a layout in under 30 minutes!

    Julie started with the preplaced toggle accents, and then added her own My

    Stickeaseimages, brads, and photos. She used the quick-title tool to easily line up

    the letter stickers in her title, matted a photo with a My Stickease frame, and even

    placed a brad in the middle of a My Stickease flower to give it extra dimension.

    Studio J is very easy to use, and I see most of my customers being able to work through

    it without any issues. I also will be able to invite a few ladies to use the program that

    have been unable to do classic scrapbooking due to physical limitations. I know they

    will be thrilled that they too can now have beautiful pages with all the barriersremoved for them.

    Squeaky Connors, Consultant, Hugo, Minnesota

    By using the various fonts in the text tool, Squeaky created a beautiful

    custom quote, title, and date by adding multiple text boxes and arranging

    them to make her title line up just right. Were also impressed with the

    subtle ink distressing she added to the B&T Duos papers to make them

    even more grungyand gorgeousthan they were on their own.

    I have used several other digital scrapbooking programs, but none of them are as fast,

    simple, and easy as Studio J. The absolutely best part is the finished result. My layouts

    look beautiful in real life. I cant wait for the next ones to arrive!

    With three daughters, each with her own s crapbook, Tammy is always

    looking for shortcuts to complete three layouts for the same event. Studio J

    makes creating multiple layouts a breeze! Tammy created a base layout, then

    copied it and substituted in pictures of the individual girls. She was done

    with six pages in about the time it would take her to complete one classic

    two-page layout!

    My three daughters love to get their pictures taken as much as I love taking them, so

    I have a lot of scrapbooking to get done. I try to make each layout unique, and

    Star Struck and Star Studded

    No red carpet needed for this Close To My Heart

    Rising Star. She has star power, and plenty of it!

    Barbra Ottens confident attitude and bubbly

    personality have helped her reach out to customers

    and build a successful Close To My Heart business.

    Those same qualities have also led her to the

    title of Biggest American Idol Fan in herhometown of Southwest Michigan and Northern

    Indiana. Barbra received roughly 18,000 votes,

    including support from her three most adoring

    fans, her teenage children. She has met 22

    different American Idol contestants, due in large

    part to her outgoing nature. I have always loved

    meeting celebrities since I was young, she says,

    and now that I am older, I find that I have even

    more confidence, so its eas y to approach them.

    That self-assurance translates into everything

    Barbra does. Barbra, a Manager from Stevensville,

    Michigan, characterizes herself as a savvy

    businesswoman first and an artist second. She

    joined Close To My Heart in 2008 as a way to earn

    an income as a stay-at-home mom, and considers

    herself a true entrepreneur. She always knew she

    wanted to be her own boss a nd build a well-rounded business.

    Friendship First

    Barbra takes a confident approach to business in

    several ways. First, she works on maintaining a

    strong Team. Her leadership motto is Friendship

    first! because, as she says, Its easy to motivate

    your friends.

    Whenever Barbra shares the business opportunity,

    she commits to strengthening her new and existingTeam members by focusing on training and support.

    She encourages her Team to give great customer

    service by actively calling their customers to follow

    up on purchases.

    A Good Researcher

    Second, Barbra focuses on her own training.

    Michelle Nist, a Director from Hartland, Michigan,

    Barbras Upline, recounts that although Barbra was

    an accomplished scrapbooker when she joined

    Close To My Heart, she had never made a card.

    Once she received her New Consultant Kit, she

    started practicing and practicing, creating

    hundreds of cards. Talk about taking a challenge

    and turning it into a strength! says Michelle.

    Barbra has also sought training as she entered

    the online business world. She researched technical

    aspects of blog writing, such as choosing traffic-

    driving keywords, before launching her blog. Idont know if Im really tech-savvy, she admits,

    or just a good researcher.

    Before diving into business building, Barbara

    researched her area to help her find a niche. She

    learned that many in her area who sold competing

    products viewed their businesses more as hobbies

    than careers. She found her niche by giving hercustomers excellent individual service.

    The Most Wonderful People Ever

    The same confidence Barbra draws on as she

    approaches celebrities helps her network of

    friendshipsand her Team. Team spirit is part

    of Barbras sense of community within Close To My

    Heart. Ive always found scrapbookers to be some

    of the most wonderful people ever, she says.

    Barbra fits right in with those wonderfulpeople. She works with many community groups

    and offers scrapbooking classes at local healthcare

    facilities. Between the friendships she has formed

    with Consultants and customers, she says, My

    life is completely filled with good friends because

    of Close To My Heart.

    a Glue Dot and

    sandwich them

    between the two

    card pieces near the

    2.Place card on pushpad. Using a piercing

    tool, pierce through

    Peek-a-boo!Surprise your loved ones with

    a photo hidden behind the card front. You can

    use a circle from Dimensional Elements On

    Target to frame your photo and provide you a

    stencil to trace and cut out the card front.

    The image on the card front hides away the sentiment inside,while the ribbon and button

    embellishment seem to float alongside. To get this look, use the Soft Set eyelet tool to punch

    holes in the clear card, and then weave ribbon through the holes.

    Create an adorable picture frame!We cut apart the two sides of the card, then made an

    opening in one and brushed on a bit of Create-a-Shade pearl paint to frame the photo.

    After matting and attaching the photo with 3-D foam tape, we

    stacked up pairs of buttons between the two clear layers and

    stitched it all together with embroidery floss (shown in

    the tip on the opposite page).

    Along with brads and eyelets,stitching is a great way

    to attach buttons and paper to your clear cards. The
