Dear Fellow Members After our recent AGM, my sincere thanks to outgoing Vice President Gary Beadell ARPT and Provisional Representative Roger Turney for their dedication on the Guild Committee over the past two or more years. I also wish to welcome new Committee Member Jonathan Parise ARPT and Provisional Representative Christine McCrae on the committee. We have some very big tasks ahead of us and I’m glad for your support and help over this important time. My sincere congratulations to new PTTGV Life Member Christopher Streader ARPT whom was bestowed this status at the recent APTTA Convention in South Australia. Many thanks also to Ex-Solicitor Anthony Sell who is assisting our efforts for the change of constitution and gave members some insight to changes needed for our organisation. It was fantastic to see so many Victorians at the recent APTTA Convention, as the majority of attendees were Victorians. I will also take this opportunity to apologies to all Victorian members in relation to the “Bridges” magazine, in which the Victorian report was not added in the recent editorial. I can assure the PTTGV that a report was completed and submitted, however something went wrong with print and our Guild report was the only one missing in the addition. In my address, I thanked my wonderful team over the past two years as well those whom have supported and participated in our Guild affairs over the years during my Presidency. I also acknowledge the previous students graduating from the Australasian School of Piano Technology (ASPT), as well addressed our work with the current website, constitution work and upcoming Convention 2019. I apologies once again; although nothing can be done about it, I believe that it is important to acknowledge what we do here in Victoria, and truly believe we are leading the way in relation to our sister branches. The SA Convention even though having a small attendance, was quite professional, low key and very good in my opinion. One reminding thing my predecessor use to say; which I must agree “If you can take one thing away from a Convention, it was a good Convention”… Well I got more than one thing, so I really enjoyed it. I’m very pleased to announce that the 18 th APTTA Convention “A Grand Adventure” will be held in Melbourne 2019. I encourage you raise your “Tuning Hammer” in support of this once in every decade opportunity. More info will come along the way, but stay tuned to our website page for future info - www.pianotuners.asn.au. Many thanks to Cliff Meakin ARPT who has stepped up as Vice President on the committee, as well has put some time and effort into creating our new website; which is currently live. Please if you have any suggestions or things to add, please get in contact with either Cliff or myself if I can assist with your enquiry. It saddens me to announce that the Australian School of Piano Technology will close its doors in Ringwood after almost 7 years training students. Being one of the first initial five students, obviously I will take this a little more personally and reminisce about my wonderful

time of study. I have spoken to Director Brent Ottley ARPT and he has stated that training of some magnitude will start up again in the future. The Guild strongly supports Director Ottley and we sincerely wish him the very best in the future. We all anticipate any news regarding future training for our industry, and I personally stay positive that a solution will come forward. Our next presentation on the 27th of November will be at Prestige Pianos & Organs in Preston. The Guild will be presenting Mr Alastair McAllister on historical scaling and to talk about his experience in the harpsichord industry. This will follow a small presentation from the team of Prestige on the new and exciting things they are working on. I received some communication from Bernie Capicchiano in relation to their next function. Bernies Music Land is proud to present Mr Lothar Kiesche – Piano Technician / Vice President of Schimmel Pianos Germany, who will give news on the Schimmel factory. Time is 3:30pm – 5pm on Monday 27th of November – Food and Drinks available. All technicians invited, but must RSVP to Michelle Capicchiano on [email protected] by the 20th of November for catering purposes. Thank you again for your support and look forward in delivering our tasks and major events over the next two years.

Yours Sincerely, Bradley Saul – PTTGV President

The biggest Guild news from me this month is that we have a new website. The web page address (the URL) is the same – pianotuners.asn.au Thanks to Nick and Marguerite from Artful for their support in the transition. The website is live and gives me a significant

technology platform that I can get my teeth into, it will deal with all our requirements for the 2019 convention. Please have a look at https://pianotuners.asn.au/members - find yourself and let me know ASAP if your details are incorrect or you would like something changed. Thanks also to Eddie and Mandy Tichelaar for providing their showroom and workshop for our last Guild meeting ☺ It was a fabulously informative day with excellent presentations from Dave Amey, Mark Bolsius, Eddie and Bradley.

Out and About…. Since our last newsletter, some members may be aware of Life Member Brian Burch had open heart surgery to replace the main aortic valve and a bi-pass on September 4th. Brian has recovered well and currently on the mend, but

will take many months of rest, and will not be moving pianos anytime soon. Also congratulations to new Life Member Christopher Streader who turned 60 years of age in October.

PARKE PIANO STRINGS & MATERIALS For new-comers to the industry, and for anyone not familiar with our business, we’d like to take this opportunity to highlight the services we offer to the tuners and technicians throughout Australia and the region. We are specialist piano bass string manufacturers, and suppliers of a large range of piano materials, parts and accessories, with 36 years’ experience. BASS STRINGS: We offer a complete bass string making service - full and partial sets, odd strings and “hexacore” replacement strings. We have a vast library of scales and can in many cases make sets with just the specification of make and model, without the need for samples or paper rubbings. All strings are manufactured on our premises using Roslau music wire and Degen copper. HAMMERS: We keep a comprehensive range of both German Abel and Japanese Imadegawa hammers, both pre-bored (in most common sizes) and un-bored. Abel hammers are available in both their regular and Natural felts. The Natural felt hammers are enzyme-washed to preserve the lanolin content, and are very popular for both the rich quality of their sound and the minimal voicing required. Where pre-bored hammers are not suitable, we offer a complete custom hammer-boring, cutting and shaping service on the provision of samples. This work is done by Emanuel Rey, a Swiss-trained piano builder and one of Australia’s most experienced and trusted technicians. PARTS, MATERIALS & ACCESSORIES: We carry a full range of products, including Tuning Pins, Piano wire, Felts and

Leathers, Tools, Action Parts, Castors and Dollies, Pianola Materials (including rubberised cloths), Lubricants and Glues, Polishes, Books, Accessories and much more. Our Catalogue and Price List are down-loadable from our Web-site www.parkepianostrings.com.au. You will need the password ‘pps01’ to access the price List. You can ring us on (02) 9451 3500 or e-mail us at any time at [email protected]. Our factory is in Frenchs Forest in Sydney. Please feel free to drop in any time if you are in Sydney. Alisa and I are always happy to help in any way we can. Alisa and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our existing customers for their continued support, and look forward to doing business with any new customers we have not yet had the opportunity to serve.
