President’s Message: We start another SVC year and look forward to building on the wonderful work that has been done by past President and ShowHouse Chair, Cheree Carlton, and her team of officers and volunteers. We are grateful for the team’s service and celebrate its success. The highlights included raising over $65,000 at the 2016 Show House and awarding multiple scholarships from the Lois Pickard competition. We congratulate Debbie Reid who was presented with the 2016 Sandra Apolinsky Service Award at the ASO annual meeting in May, for her many years of volunteering for the Symphony. I also want to thank our new officers, listed in the following sections, for their commitment to making our next year a success. We are already planning the events for the Fall and Spring and will again start with a Kick-off Membership Party on September 27th, from 6 to 8 pm at the home of Mrs. Deane Giles at 2124 Lake Heather Way in Lake Heather Estates. This will be a great opportunity to bring in prospective new members and to introduce them to SVC members and our program of activities. The SVC will then sponsor ASO Masterworks Concert, Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, on October 7 th . Please join us for this wonderful event. We are in the process of selecting a home for the 2017 ShowHouse and we are open to additional suggestions from our membership. We will be making the final selection soon. There will be many opportunities to help with our events during the 2016-2017 year. Those opportunities include serving as an usher at a Youth Concert, helping with the Lois Pickard Competition in February, cooking at a variety of events, helping with Guest Conductors or Artists, and several other events. We need to help grow our membership this year, so that we can continuously improve our work and make it more rewarding as well. I look forward to working with all of you toward another successful year for SVC

The Dr. Sandra R. Apolinsky Service Award

2016 Recipient - Debbie Reid

Congratulations to Debbie Reid, our 2016 recipient of the Dr. Sandra R. Apolinsky Service Award. This award was established by the ASO Board of Directors to recognize “leadership, spirit of volunteerism, and selfless service to others”. No one exemplifies these qualities more than our 2016 honoree.

Debbie is a long-time member of the Symphony Volunteer Council. Since 2006-2007, she has served the SVC as Vice President-Education, working tirelessly with the Lois Pickard Luncheons, and the music students performing at the event. For a number of years, she has worked in many capacities with our Decorators’ ShowHouses. For the last two years, she has served daily in the cafe.

Our honoree has also been active in many charitable endeavors …

She served as Treasurer of Bush Hills Music Club. On Mondays and Thursdays, she works with feeding the homeless at Highlands United Methodist Church. She also belongs to the DAR.

She has previously been Director of the Youth Choir at Shades Valley Lutheran Church She has also been a member of the Birmingham Chorale.

The Luncheon will be held at Vestavia Country Club on Thursday, February 16, 2017. Young musicians, from age twelve through Senior High School compete in three categories: Strings, Woodwinds / Brass, and Piano. The competition is scheduled for February 14th. The winners will perform at the Luncheon. First Place winners will receive $1500, and second place winners will receive $750. The Grand Prize winner will play with the ASO at a designated time in the next Season. Applications and Brochure for the Scholarship Competition are on our website.

A Silent Auction at the Luncheon benefits these Scholarships. Participation is needed from the SVC Membership to secure items and gift cards for the Auction. Particularly popular are gift certificates (these need to be good for six months following the Luncheon). These gift certificates are from restaurants, bakeries, gift shops, hair and nail salons, garden shops, etc. All gifts are tax deductible, and a “Gift in Kind” form will be provided.

If you need the Committee to pick up your donation, or if you have any questions, please contact:

The Greystone home of Lynn and Michael Meeks was an ideal setting for the Symphony Volunteer Council’s Spring membership meeting. Members and prospective members mingled in the beautifully decorated living and dining room area, and on the patio for the annual event. Good conversation, delicious hors d’oeuvres, and wine were savored by all as a prelude to the business meeting with Retiring President Cheree Carlson presiding.

New SVC Officers were previously elected and installed after the business meeting.

Officers serving in 2016-17 are …

President: Char Bonsack; Executive Vice President: Debra Gilbreath; Vice Presidents of Education: Linda Griggs, Mimi Jackson, Debbie Reid; Vice Presidents Membership: Martha and Bob Black; Vice Presidents Hospitality: Phyllis Davis, Betsy Cooper, Sandra Wilson; Corresponding Secretary: Tonie Bone; Treasurer: Mike Griggs; Assistant Treasurer: Bob Brown; Parliamentarian: Liz Warren; Immediate Past President: Cheree Carlton.

Appointed to serve as Committee Chairs are …

Guest Artist Hospitality: Emily Omura; Historian: Diane Ray; Legislative Liaison: Rosa Minehan; Lois Pickard Chairmen: Debra Gilbreath, Phyllis Davis, Rosa Minehan; Orchestra Hospitality: Beverly Lisenby; Publicity / Facebook: Kathie Ramsey; Volunteer Coordinator: Shirley Brown; Website: Sandra Annonio; Decorator Showhouse Chairman: Char Bonsack.

We were entertained by two very talented young musicians:

Sophie Spina played the oboe and attends Oak Mountain High School. She is the Granddaughter of SVC Members Richard and Jonnie Venglik. Sophie participated in the Lois Pickard Music Scholarship Competition in January 2016.

Our other performer was violinist Haeun Kim.  She attends ASFA and was a winner in the Summer Scholarship Program attending the Aspen Summer Music Festival in Colorado for eight weeks.
