Key question:
How does development
vary around the world?
By the end of this lesson, you should understand
how different factors influence development and
how it is represented around the world.
Instructions
This box is for you to read the information
inside of it.
A task for you to complete
The task might vary from your opinion, a
comprehension task, analysing maps etc.
Research opportunity
This is where you there will be a youtube
clip or link to allow you to research further
Exam question.
The exam question(s) might be a ready made
model for you to mark, some for you to
complete

Factors influencing development
The development of a country is determined by several factors, some are human and physical factors. However these can
be broken down into environmental, political etc.
Physical
Economic
Social
Political
Natural resources
Here I want you to match up the factors with the picture and description.
Some countries such as the Saudi Arabia have an abundance
(lots) of raw materials such as oil or precious minerals. These
can be sold and the money invested into developing the
country.
Some countries are at war or the government may be
corrupt. Therefore money does not reach the people
who need it most.
Some parts of the world have issues that are caused by
people. These include low levels of education and poor
water quality.
Some countries have debts and this means that they
have to pay a lot of money in interest and repayments
and there is very little left over for development projects
Some areas have a hostile or difficult landscape. This
can make development more difficult. Examples of this
are very hot climates or arid (a lack of water) climates
which make it difficult to grow sufficient food.

How is development data represented?
In geography, we use different graphical presentations such as choropleth and proportional maps, but also
proportional circles, bar and line graph to show different levels of development in the world.
A choropleth map showing the life expectancy in different
countries A proportional map showing the amount of obese children
(5- 19 years old) in the world 2015.
The colours on the map present the different areas, if you can access it have a look on
https://worldmapper.org/maps/obese-children-
2015/?sf_action=get_data&sf_data=results&_sft_product_cat=disease
Describe the pattern of child obesity given in figure 1. (4 marks)
Here I am going to model how to answer the choropleth and proportional map.
The reason why I am going to do this is because they are sometime difficult to understand and interpret. You will see how I have
structured my answer and you will then be able to have a go.
These questions are typically 4 markers.
1. Box the command
word.
The word is describe-
this mean you need to
say what you can see.
For this instance, you
would be looking at the
figure.
2. Underline- what is the
question asking you?
It is asking me to look at
patterns, you could say
relationship. In this case,
you are looking at the
figure.
3. Geography- where is
it?
In this question, child
obesity would be the
word relating to
geography.
Describe the pattern of child obesity given in figure 1.
Figure 1 shows the proportion of obese
children in the world 2015. It clearly shows
there is a high amount of child obesity in East
Asia, particularly China and India. The lowest
amount of child obesity is in South East
Africa, especially in Kenya. However there is
general trend relating to development, most
advanced countries are enlarged in
comparison low income developing countries
who have shrunk significantly. An anomaly
that does not fit this trend is Canada as it is
barely recognisable on the map.
Fig 1:A proportional map showing the amount of obese
children (5- 19 years old) in the world 2015.
How did I form the answer?
Figure 1 shows the proportion of obese children in the
world 2015.
It clearly shows there is a high amount of child obesity in
East Asia, particularly China and India.
The lowest amount of child obesity is in South East Africa,
especially in Kenya.
However there is general trend relating to development,
most of advanced countries are enlarged in comparison
low income developing countries who have shrunk
significantly.
An anomaly that does not fit this trend is Canada as it is
barely recognisable on the map.
1.By mention the
figure shows the
examiner you have
understood the
question.
2. I started with the
highest. Which one
is clearly not its
correct size. China
is one of the
biggest.
3.I have then moved onto
the lowest. I thought to
make it more specific, i
would mention some
compass direction and a
country within South East
Africa.
4.afterwards, I have
touch upon what is
common on this
map- I know from
my own knowledge
advanced countries
such as the USA
and UK have a
child obesity issue
in comparison to
less developed.
5. Finally, mentioning what
is a surprise such as
Canada not have large
amounts of child obesity.
Describe the pattern of life expectancy given in figure 2.
I would follow the exact same structure to answer the question. In the previous slides, I BUG the question and followed HLGTA.
Figure 2 shows life expectancy varying
around the world. It clearly shows there is a
high life expectancy in the USA and Australia
with an average of 78.3 to 83.9. The lowest
life expectancies are concentrated in Africa.
For example, Nigeria and Chad have a life
expectancy less than 60.6.However there is
general trend relating to development as most
of advanced countries have a high life
expectancy whereas low income developing
countries have a low life expectancy- this
could be due to healthcare accessibility. An
anomaly is Russia’s life expectancy (67.5-
73.3) because it is an advanced country and
does not have one of the highest life
expectancy.
Fig 2:A choropleth map showing life expectancy in the
world.
Your turn
You are going to have a go at 3 different maps relating to development. I
have included a world map and some continents so you can give specific
place names.
To be successful:
Follow my structure- use HLGTA.
Give specific names (compass directions if possible)
Any data (choropleth maps will have this on).
Proportional maps- look how the shape has changed.

2018.
Describe the relationship of billionaires in the world (4 marks)
Hint: bigger the country- the more billionaires

Describe the pattern of literacy rate in the world (4 marks)
