IntroductionSouthernSudaniscurrentlyanautonomousregionwithinSudan,butinJuly2011itisscheduledtobecometheworld’snewestcountryasitsecedesfromSudanfollowinganhistoricreferendumonself-determinationthattookplaceinJanuary2011.
SouthernSudanisborderedbyEthiopiatotheeast,Kenya,Uganda,andtheDemocraticRepublicoftheCongotothesouth,andtheCentralAfricanRepublictothewest.TothenorthliethestatesofSouthernDarfur,SouthernKordufan,WhiteNile,SennarandBlueNilewhichfallundertheNorthernregionofSudan.SouthernSudan’scapitalcityisJuba,inCentralEquatoriaState.
Inthekeytransitionalperiodleadinguptoindependence,itisvitaltoensurethatthelatestdataiswidelydisseminatedandputtothebestpossibleuse.ThisdocumentisintendedasaquickreferencetoavailablestatisticalinformationonSouthernSudan.Additionalinformationonalltheincludedindicatorsaswellasothersareavailableonwww.ssccse.orgoronrequestfromtheSSCCSE.Wehopethatitwillserveitspurposeofbeinganintroductiontothemostup-to-datestatisticsavailableforgovernment,policymakers,theinternationalcommunityandallthosewhoareinterestedinSouthernSudan.

SSCCSETheSouthernSudanCentreforCensus,StatisticsandEvaluation(SSCCSE)istheof-ficialstatisticalagencyoftheGovernmentofSouthernSudan.Itismandatedtocol-lect,analyseanddisseminateallofficialeconomic,socialanddemographicstatistics.
UndertheprovisionsoftheCPAandtheInterimConstitutionofSouthernSudan,SSCCSEwasassignedresponsibilityforconductingtheSouthernSudansectionofthe5thSudanPopulationandHousingCensusin2008.Whilethe2008CensusremainsthelargestundertakingbytheSSCCSE,ithascarriedoutotherlargenation-allyrepresentativesurveys,mostnotablythe2006and2010roundsoftheSudanHouseholdHealthSurvey(SHHS)andtheNationalBaselineHouseholdSurvey(NBHS),2009.
Population•ThepopulationofSouthernSudanwas
8.26millioninthe2008Census.Ofthis4.29millionaremale,and3.97millionarefemale.
•Thepopulationisaveryyoungone,with16%ofthepopulationundertheageof5,32%undertheageof10,51%undertheageof18and72%ofthepopulationundertheageof30.
•Thereisawidevariationinthepopula-tionbetweenstates,withJongleibeingthemostpopulousat1,358,602peopleand16%ofthetotalpopulation.TheleastpopulousisWesternBahrElGhazal,with333,431and4%ofthetotalpopulation.
•TheaveragenumberofmembersinaprivatehouseholdinSouthernSudanis7.
•Thepopulationislargelyruralwith83%residinginruralareas.Thisvarieswidelybetweenstateswith92%ofthepopulationinNorthernBahrElGhazalclassifiedasrural,comparedto57%inWesternBahrElGhazal.
•ThepopulationdensityinSouthernSudanis13/sq.km,whichislessthanonetenthofUganda,wherethedensityis136/sq.km.
