3. YOGA CLASSES & REFLEXOLOGY

The significance of Union Although many people think this term refers to union between body and mind or body, mind and spirit, the traditional acceptance is union between the Jivatman and Paramatman that is between one's individual consciousness and the Universal Consciousness. Therefore Yoga refers to a certain state of consciousness as well as to methods that help one reach that goal or state of union with the divine. The 5 points of yoga There are hundreds or more of such techniques and therefore as many different Yogas. In order to simplify and clarify the topic, Swami Vishnu-devananda summarized the vast science of Yoga into 5 principles of Yoga which are easy to understand and to include in one's daily life. These five points are: proper exercise; proper breathing; proper relaxation; proper diet; and positive thinking & meditation. The 4 Paths of Yoga Yogic practices have been traditionally classified into the four Margas (paths). These four paths are:

Jnana Yoga or Jnana Marga which is the Yoga of wisdom and develops the Intellect or will Bhakti Yoga, the Yoga of devotion, opens the heart Karma Yoga, the path of action of selfless service. Raja Yoga, the royal or psychological which involves the mind. A branch of Raja Yoga which is Hatha

Yoga which prepares the Yogi for the higher stages of Raja Yoga. Sivananda Yoga, the Yoga of Synthesis

Swami Sivananda recognised that every Yogi, or human being for that matter, possesses and identifies with each of these elements: Intellect, heart, body and mind. He therefore advocated everyone to practice certain techniques from each path. This came to be known as the Yoga of Synthesis. He also taught that in accordance with individual temperament and taste one can emphasize the practice of certain Yogas over others. CLASSES: Everyday at 8:30am and 4.30pm Place: Hill Palace Beach Resort, North Cliff, Varkala Courses available upon request Every day at 8 am and 4 pm Duration: 2 hours Place: New Heaven Resort, Thiruvambadi Beach, North Cliff, Varkala All levels welcome Yoga for beginners Commencing every Thursday at New Heaven Resort Daily instruction for 7 days REFLEXOLOGY & FOOT MASSAGE Reflexology is a form of bodywork that focuses primarily on the feet. The underlying theory behind reflexology is that there are "reflex" areas on the feet and hands that correspond to specific organs, glands, and other parts of the body. It promotes relaxation, improves circulation, reduces pain, soothes tired feet, and encourages overall healing. Reflexology is also used for post-operative or palliative care. The duration of the massage is between 50 minutes to 1 hour. The massage consists of first warming up the feet and giving a general foot massage and then using reflexology techniques on the sole of the feet and finalising with leg massage body work. This massage is carried out at Casa Eva Luna, please consult for times and prices.

The return journey can be done on foot returning the same way or by local bus or rickshaw. To get the bus just stop one on the main road and make sure its heading to Varkala. If you prefer to return by rickshaw, walk about 1km past the bridge and there is a rickshaw stand near the temple. Janarhanapuram Temple, Tank, Papanasam beach and natural spring, Helipad and Cliff – 3km The route starts from Casa Eva Luna, taking a left turn at the Kurrakkani Road and following the road past the Gateway Hotel on the bend until you reach Temple Junction. On the right of the junction and up the stairs is the magnificent 2000 year old Janarhanapuram Temple. The temple of Janardana is a fine ex maple of Kerala art and architecture. The circular ‘Sanctum sanctorum” surmounted by a conical dome of copper sheets, the square ‘mandapa' with beautiful wooden carvings of Navagrahas on the ceiling and copper-plated roof over it, the quadrangular enclosures (prakara) around them, a hall containing a ‘bali peetha' in front of the inner temple are the characteristic features of Kerala style of architecture. Opposite the temple is the tank, it’s used by local people for bathing and washing clothes. You can observe the activities around the tank from the Sree Padman restaurant which has a terrace overlooking the tank. From the tank follow the road down until you reach Papanasam beach. This is a holy beach, Papanasam which means 'Destroyer of the sins'. Here you can see families doing “poojas” (a form of worship where different articles are offered before the deity), and throwing their offerings into the sea. Further along is the mineral water springs which comes gushing out from the cliffs bordering the beach and are known for their medicinal qualities. From the natural spring there are various accesses to the cliff, the first one is just after Varkala Marine Palace which brings you out onto the helipad. The second one is past the natural spring and has good stairs brings you out onto the cliff by the Tibetan market. The cliff path runs parallel to the sea and all the shops, travel agencies, internet, bars and restaurants can be found here.
