PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
There goes the 14-15 school year. The class of 2015 is on their way out
and the class of 2019 is on their way in. Goodbye and good luck seniors
and HELLO incoming 9th graders. Welcome to the Royal family.
We are down to our final 7 days (seniors) and our last 11.5 days for our
9-11th graders. Time will fly by so it is critical that we remain focused
through the end of the year. Even though the end of the year is near, it
is not completely over. It is critical that ALL students step it up and
finish their academic year strong. It is time to check your grades more
frequently, study harder and use your time more wisely. Finals and
EOCs are just around the corner, are you ready?
At this time all students, with the exception of a few special cases, have
been scheduled for next year. We hope that all students’ schedules will
go live for student and teacher review the end of next week (June 12).
There will be a short window for students and families to review the
schedule and then, if needed make any schedule changes at that time.
Fortunately, next year KM will see very little change in its teaching
staff. Unfortunately we are losing a couple teachers due to career
moves, and retirement, nothing that can be public information at this
time though.
Thank you to all our students, families, and our staff for a great 14-15
school year. I would also like to thank our graduating seniors for their
contribution to Kent-Meridian over the past four years. You have
made a lasting impression on our school. Thank you staff for all
your support and hard work to make the 14-15 school year a
successful one.
Have a wonderful, safe summer.
SUMMER SCHOOL AT KM
KM will again host Summer School this year. Summer school
will begin June 29- Aug. 6. Summer school sessions will run from
8:30am to 11:30 am and again from 12pm to 3pm. It will all be
computer based using the Edgenuity program.
Registration deadline is June 12, 2015, and student enrollment is
on a first come, first serve basis. A letter grade is given if the half
credit is earned. The cost of summer school is FREE. But with the
FREEdom of being in summer school comes a contract that requires
regular attendance and constant forward progression on their online
course(s). Maintaining daily attendance is important for a successful
learning experience. Students are not allowed more than three
absences. Please consult with your student’s teachers and counselor on
summer school placement decisions. Call 253-373-4079 to speak to
your student’s counselor today.
Kent School District Nutritional Services will be running a free lunch
program here at KM to coincide with our summer school days.
ATTENTION SENIORS
In order to graduate next month and walk in the commencement
ceremony, ALL graduation requirements must be completed. This
includes passing all Kent school district required classes, state required
tests and/or collection of evidence, and the culmination project. For
those that are close, it means you passed the collection of
evidence/HSPE or EOC tests and all scores have been received prior to
Monday, June 8, 2015 or you will not walk. See the senior timeline
below.
END-OF-COURSE ASSESSMENTS (EOC) June 9, 10 and 11- Testing will be from 7:30 to 10:45. Activities will
be available to non-testing students. Class Schedules will be adjusted
on the 9th and 10th to accommodate these assessments. Student room
assignments are posted throughout the building.

COUNSELING COMMENTARY Seniors please remember that your final semester may determine your
graduation status. For those already accepted to college lower grades
or a drop in GPA could mean probation or revocation of your
acceptance. Push hard these last few weeks to complete credit
retrieval raise your grades and continue looking for scholarships.
Have you received an award during your high school career? Have
you been awarded a scholarship? We would like to know about
these. Please pick up a pink form in the counseling office and return
it by May 14th. We would like to honor you by publishing this
information in the awards night program and in the commencement
program.
CWU DUAL CREDIT at KM KM is partnering with Central Washington University and their Dual
Credit Department to bring college credits to KM starting next year.
The CWU Dual Credit Department is very pleased to be partnering with
us to offer College in the High School (Cornerstone) courses to our
students. Through the CWU program, high school juniors and seniors
are able to take university level courses and receive college credit
without leaving our high school campus. This is achieved by our high
school administrators and teachers working closely with CWU faculty
and staff to provide high school students with the highest quality
courses possible. Through this opportunity, students are able to
appreciate the academic challenges of college course work and find that
the experience helps to clarify educational goals. The majority of
classes taken through Central Washington University will transfer to
any four-year public university in Washington State, as well as most
in-state private universities and other universities across the country.
KM’s MISSION, VISION AND BELIEFS Mission Statement:
KM staff provides a safe, inclusive, high-quality education that
prepares students for college and career success and encourages
them to become active life-long learners and responsible
members of the community.
Vision Statement:
KM students are prepared with the knowledge and skills necessary
to successfully take on the responsibilities of college, career,
family, and citizenship in a diverse and increasingly competitive
global society.
Three Beliefs:
1. Valuing the Belief in Potential: All students can be successful and
reach their potential when held to high standards. KM meets
students where they are, supports them, and engages them in
rigorous content and active and challenging learning tasks.
2. Valuing Inclusion: Each student matters. KM takes pride in our rich
diversity and provides a safe and nurturing environment where all
students are accepted and valued. Respecting and celebrating
diversity allows us to create a better and more peaceful world.
3. Valuing Character: Integrity, hard work, and citizenship are
important ways to function and contribute to our community. KM
promotes a can-do attitude and resilience among our students
INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB) International Baccalaureate (IB)
Our IB Students finished their external assessments in May and are now
finishing up school. With the last few weeks left, students are getting
excited about summer. While the 12th grade IB testers are awaiting their
IB results, 11th grade IB Diploma Candidates are encouraged to
continue working on their Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS)
projects.
The IB Exam results will be declared on July, 5th 2015 at 12:00 GMT.
This day, the students will be able to access the IB results website in
order to retrieve your scores. The retrieval window opens at 8:30 AM
PT on Sunday, July 5th. You will not be granted earlier access to your
scores. Use the website below and enter the personal code and PIN
provided by your IB Coordinator. http://candidates.ibo.org
Reporting Scores to Universities (Seniors)
There are two ways to request that your scores be sent to
universities.
Option One is for those of you who are positive you want the scores
sent without seeing them in advance. If you’re in that boat, please
provide either in person or via email, the names of up to SIX
universities where you’d like your scores reported to the IB
Coordinator. We need this information by Thursday, June 12, and our
IB Coordinator will take care of the rest for you.
*If you’d like your scores sent to more than six universities, there is a
slight fee. Use the link below and follow the directions on the website
on reporting scores to more than six universities.
Option Two is for those of you who’d like to see your scores before
you determine that yes, indeed, you would like for universities to
see them. If that’s you, please use the link below. This is done via
the postal service, so please follow the directions on the site. Again,
this would be for students who are NOT sure that they want their scores
reported and would like to see them before sending them. The IBO
requests you make your request no later than September 15.
http://www.ibo.org/iba/transcripts/index.cfm
Candidates must submit their own transcript requests at
https://rrs.ibo.org. Please note, a fee will be applicable for each
transcript request made.
Also, the IBO mails certificates and diplomas to KM in late August.
Plan to stop by KM in order to pick yours diploma. , or provide our
Mrs. Bains , IB Coordinator with a self-addressed, stamped envelope
so that she can mail it to you.
For more information on IB, please contact Mrs. Bains 253-373-4160
or email her at [email protected]
NEW IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENT
FOR 2016-2017 Starting in the fall of 2016, all students in grades 9 -12 will be required
to have 2 varicella vaccinations. We will be sending notices out for
students that do not have the two vaccinations on our records. Please
take time to be sure that your student has had the two vaccinations. If
they have not, they can get the vaccination now. If you have any
questions feel free to contact the Health Room at 253-373-4030 during
regular school hours.
USING SKYWARD SKYLERT The Kent School District has enabled a feature in Skyward Family
Access called Skylert. Skylert allows parents and guardians the ability
to request auto-dial messages go to telephones (home, work or cell),
email addresses or as text messages. Parents and guardians can add
multiple phones and email addresses to receive messages as well as opt
out of receiving non-emergency school district messages. See below
page with instructions on how to sign up.

EMPHASIS ON TARDIES, ABSENCES AND
BEHAVIOR 1. Students need to come to school each day on time, get to each class
on time, and if you are absent have it excused. If you are missing
class you are missing important work.
2. If you end up with a consequence for not following the rules or not
showing up to an assigned detention, Friday School or ISS, accept
the consequence and show up.
3. Students who are tardy or absent will be marked tardy or absent by
their teacher. Students may receive a teacher directed
detention/consequence.
4. Students who do not attend the teacher directed detention will be
referred by the teacher for defiance and will then serve a Friday
School. If students do not attend Friday School they will be assigned
1 day ISS. If students skip or have any issues with ISS they will
receive 3 days OSS.
5. Students, with a pattern of poor choices in behavior, tardies or
absences in a given week may be determined ineligible for field trips,
sports, dances, off campus pass privileges, and subject to lunchroom
clean up as a consequence.

ATTENDANCE OFFICE PROCEDURES 1. The attendance office will gladly accept parent notes or phone calls
to excuse student absences. The attendance office cannot accept other
notes including doctor notes unless signed by the parent.
2. If your student has an appointment and needs to leave early, please
send a note with them in the morning. Be sure to indicate time of
release. Students can fill out an attendance slip upon arrival and be
released from class at the time indicated on the slip.
3. Parents or legal guardians may call to excuse a student from school
but they must still check out in attendance before leaving. The
attendance office does not contact the student for release.
4. The alternative to the above is to come into the attendance office to
check your student out. Please bring identification.
5. Students will not be excused if they do not check out in the
attendance office before leaving campus. For safety reasons, we need
to be able to account for students at all times. Thank you for helping us
with this important duty. If a student should become ill during the
school day, please have them check out through the health room. They
can get parent permission to leave from there.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY
Notification of School Closures and Other Emergencies The Kent School District provides parents with several tools to stay
informed in the event of an emergency or sudden schedule change.
Most cell phones are equipped to receive text messages at little or no
additional cost. KSD Alert, the districts notification system, can be
configured to direct emergency bulletins to your cell phone via text
message. By registering for KSD Alert, you can also receive emergency
email bulletins on your home or office computer. Go to
www.kent.k12.wa.us/InformAgent/InformAgent.htm for more
information and to sign up for the service.
Emergencies, particularly weather-related school closures,
are broadcast to the community via television and radio through the
Public Schools Emergency Communications System. Go to
www.schoolreport.org for more information.
You can register for non-emergency news information from the district
or individual schools through InformAgent. Go to
www.kent.k12.wa.us/InformAgent/InformAgent.htm for more
information. For other information, contact Community Connections at
(253) 373-7524.
Emergency Contact Information It is very important that schools have current parent and emergency
contact information. Schools should be notified immediately of any
change in addresses, telephone numbers, or email addresses for
emergency contacts home and work locations. School staff members
are only authorized to give minor first aid and cannot treat illnesses or
serious injuries. When a student becomes ill or injured at school, an
administrator or nurse must be able to contact a parent, guardian, or
the individual listed as a student’s emergency contact. A student
cannot be allowed to leave school unless a guardian or emergency
contact is present.
FAMILY ACCESS NOW Parents of secondary students can access student emergency contact
information, assignments and grades, attendance, and class schedules
by:
1. going to www.kent.k12.wa.us
2. selecting For Parents
3. going to Online Tools for Parents
4. selecting Family Access selecting New Account
Registration providing the requested information
including an e-mail address
After following the steps above, parents will receive their log-in
information within two business days and thereafter be able to view the
records of all students in KSD schools within a single family.
For grades 8-12, Family and Student Access login names and
passwords have not been changed since last school year. If parents
have forgotten their login names and passwords, they can request that
they be sent to their email address. On the Family Access login
