Last year they crawled, this year theyll walk and next year theyll run. And if Tim Pinter has his way, soon the Eagles will be flying high.

Pinter, a former wrestler at the junior high, high school and college levels prior to coaching the sport at Tremper High School, launched a wrestling program at Christian Life School for the 2010-11 year. Of the original 100-plus kids who responded to the co-head coachs challenge to explore the sport, 30 high school students participated on the schools inaugural junior varsity team and another 30-plus students from kindergarten through eighth grade joined the Kids Wres-tling Club.

I thought our first year was tre-mendously successful. It definitely

exceeded my expectations, which were not low, Pinter said. I wasnt sure that the kids would be able to step up mentally to meet the chal-lenge of a full contact and combat sport that the school had never had before, but they handled it very well.

In our first tournament last year, we won one out of every four matches, which is about what I expected. By the end of the season, we were winning two-thirds of our matches, which is unheard of for a first-year program.

Now a varsity sportPinter was so pleased with the

inaugural season of wrestling at the school that he enrolled the program as a varsity sport for the 2011-12 campaign.

Normally, it would take a school three years to phase in a new

varsity sport, Pinter said. Were taking on a large challenge, but this was my choice. Id rather do it sooner than later.

Christian Life will compete in a number of Division I wrestling tournaments this season, including ones at Bradford, Wilmot, Westo-sha and Janesville, and will also host a tournament Dec. 10 involv-ing Lake Country Lutheran, Catholic Central, Union Grove, Cudahy and Greendale.

Pinter said that the biggest dif-ference from last season is that he and his coaching staff will be able to focus on technique this year after having been pretty much limited to teaching the basics last year.

Last year it was all very rudi-mentary, Pinter said. Nobody had any competitive wrestling experi-ence and while other coaches were teaching advanced techniques, we were literally teaching how to stand, what the rules are, how to score points, and that you cant punch and kick. It was very difficult work for experienced coaches. Now well be able to teach a much wider rep-ertoire of moves.

Pinter, whose 2011-12 team began practice Nov. 14, said that 32 students signed up for the team and that hell be thrilled if hes able to keep all of them.

stayed active with other sports, so theyre in good shape, he said. I think well be close to having all of the weight classes filled, he said. I think well be pretty complete.

Among the wrestlers who Pinter will count on this season are re-turning starters Josh Crouse (152 pounds), Paul Hammond (195), Conner Moon (138), Eli Ramsey (220), Remington Svatek (113), Brett Tennyson (145), Tyler Ten-nyson (106), Ethan Town (113) and Ryan Zierk (145).

Kids club is the futurePinter is hoping that a seasons

worth of experience and some depth will translate into success on the mats this season, but he knows the future of the program is the Kids Club.

This year we only fed ourselves one kid from the lower level (fresh-

man Joey Kasprzak, 160 pounds), but next year we could feed our-selves six, and within four years well have a huge pile of Kids Club wrestlers, Pinter said.

Lino Martinez, a former Illinois Hall of Fame wrestling coach, is co-head coach for the Eagles. As-sistant coaches are Steve Bilik, Jim Pinter, Kevin Pinter, Al Town and Dave Write.

We plug in God to everything we do with de-votions and prayer time, Pinter said. Parents see wrestling as something thats good for physical and mental growth, but were adding a spiritual growth emphasis to it as well. Thats our focus.

The Eagles will begin their season with a

scrimmage at North Chicago Nov. 22, followed by a dual meet at Shoreland Lutheran Nov. 29.

The fifth and sixth grade volleyball A team finished in second place at the Racine Lutheran Tournament in late October. In pool play, the Eagles beat Concordia and Our Savior Lutheran in straight sets to advance to the cham-pionship round. The Eagles played St. Johns Lutheran in the tournament championship match. After dropping the first set to the Cougars 21-18, the Eagles won set two 21-16, setting up a thrilling third set. The Cougars edged the Eagles 15-12 to win the gold.

The Eagles B team played some of its best volleyball of the season at the Racine Lutheran High School tourna-ment in early October. The Eagles finished strong in pool play, advancing to the bronze semifinal versus Concordia Lutheran. Concordia took the first game 21-14, but the Eagles fought back, winning game two 21-18. In the third game, Concordia edged the Eagles 15-13 to take the hard fought set.

Christian Life School hosted the second annual Eagles In-vite Volleyball Tournament on Oct. 15. The Eagles Junior High team won all eight sets in pool play, defeating St. Lucy 25-8, 25-3; Racine Christian 25-11, 25-17; Lake-shore 25-0, 25-15; and Faith Christian 25-14, 25-18. The Eagles then advanced to the semifinals, where they de-feated St Johns 25-13, 25-14. In the tournament champi-onship match, the Eagles beat Heritage Christian which went 7-1 in pool play in straight sets, 25-13, 25-15.

The CLS girls JV volleyball squad improved to 6-4 on the season after beating Heritage Christian 25-15, 21-25, 25-8 in late September. It was another strong serving per-formance by the team with a 93 percent successful serve percentage. Nickie Taylor led on 17-of-18 serves with 11 aces. Carly Catalanello began the critical third game with a 6-0 service run and Emily Hall paced the team with eight kills. Jessica Gee had five digs and Jessi Stocker recorded seven assists.

Nickie Taylor had 11 aces versus Heritage Christian. Makenna Nahorniak recorded 12 assists versus The Prairie School. Jessica Gee recorded 14 points off serves, including three aces against The Prairie School.

The Eagles Junior High boys team put together a com-plete game in winning 3-2 in the season finale against Faith Christian on Oct. 18. The game started off with the Eagles being very aggressive and getting many oppor-tunities. In the 25th minute, Joseph Lee took a corner kick and placed it perfectly to Chris Hill, who was able to head it in for the first goal. After Faith Christian tied it up at 1-1, Jeff Schoopman carried the ball into the corner and crossed it to forward Jake Butenuth, who finished with his head for a 2-1 lead. After again surrendering the lead, the Eagles put an aggressive offense on for the last five minutes. Finally, in the final minute of the game, Hill received a pass from Scott Hanover and put it in the back of the net for the win. The Eagles finished their season on a great note, winning their last six games.

Elijah Kisner and Matthew Mink powered the offense with three goals as the Eagles JV team won 3-1 over Shoreland Lutheran in September. The team came out with plenty of heart and tenacity, looking to bounce back after a disap-pointing loss the week before. With a limited amount of subs, many players had to go the full 80 minutes and never quit, hustling to every loose ball. The defense was led by Spencer Bloodworth and Robert Blade. Jacob Strel also had a solid game in goal, making many saves and keeping Shoreland at bay for most of the game. The Eagles have shown considerable progress throughout the season.

Christian Life won the 2011 Homecoming matchup with Faith Christian by a final score of 6-0 on Oct. 8. The Eagles scored in the first minute of play when Tyler Ten-nyson crossed the ball to Sean Taylor, who headed it in the goal, and the team took off from there. Taylor and Dan Rozema each had two goals on the day. Tennyson and Elijah Kinser also added goals. The defense, led by Ethan Bolderson, Connor Mix, Wes Hardy and Brad Rast, helped hold the shutout for goalkeeper Nick Rozema. The Eagles finished the regular season at 11-12 overall.
